Lethal Weapon V

Yeah, 4 was garbage. It really felt like a joke at that point. I liked Rene Russo in #3 but overall the movie didn't feel dark or serious enough. What I liked about the first two was that while Riggs in many ways is a comedic character, his overall loose cannon attitude comes from a place of deep pain. By 3 and 4, he just comes off like a goofball.

This isn't official. They're developing it.

If it happens, I won't be that excited. Donner is great, but he imbued more of his own self with the progression of sequels to the point it totally got away from the original film. The original is an urban western, about these castaway Vietnam vets and their place in the world. The sequels just became buddy cop movies.

Shane Black should make this. His pitch is exactly what the franchise should be about.

When I rewatched #1 especially I was a little surprised to realize how dark and edgy Riggs actually starts out as (although Gibson’s Australian accent kept slipping in).

The big drawbacks about #3 to me are

1) Joe Pesci who IMO is hilarious in #2 is really shoehorned back in and recycling the same shtick. They keep coming up with contrived ways to involve him in the action.

2) Stuart Wilson is a pretty lame bad guy. He feels like a nuisance and he’s a big step down from how sleazy and vicious Joss Ackland and Derrick O’Connor were in #2.

Yep, agree with all of that. Pesci was brilliant in 2 but yeah, they just keep shoehorning him into 3 to keep the same thing going. And the villain did suck. He just seemed like a low-level henchman type, not big bad.

IMO Ackland and O’Connor in #2 were the perfect one two punch of the sleazeball big bad and his vicious henchman.

I’m surprised Mel Gibson doesn’t direct it himself. He’d make a dark, violent film for sure. But I know he has strong loyalty for Richard Donner so maybe Richard Donner doesn’t want to go out with Timeline being his last film.

Oh man. I forgot about Timeline. I'm not sure what the best time travel movie is but Timeline might very well be the worst. God that movie sucked.

Bring back Leo (Joe Pesci)! As crazy as the idea is, I’d actually be down to watch

Would be hilarious if they somehow involve the It’s Always Sunny gang as well considering they did their own take of Lethal Weapon 5 on the show :funny:

Guess I'm the only one that genuinely likes LW4?

The fights are competently filmed and the sound design makes them appropriately fast and brutal. It doesn't get enough credit in that regard.

I liked 4. It was the first LW I saw as well as my introduction to Jet Li.

Jet Li is about the only person in 4 who's actually being serious about anything.

I actually think all 4 movies are good to varying degrees.
I don't think there's a bad film in the series.
I actually watched all the sequels for the first time within the last 5 years.

3 is forgettable though. But I didn't think it was bad

I do really like that Donner never recast Danny Glover’s kids. They’re all the same actors growing up for a decade. If 5 does happen, I’m sure he’ll bring them back.

I feel like there was a rumor 10 or so years back of them wanting to do a sequel with Columbus Short as one of Murtagh's kids.

Obviously wouldn't and didn't happen though

16 Blocks is the last movie Donner directed.

I guess I love the ending of 4. It is so sweet and charming... considering how in bad shape Mel Gibson's character was in 1, to see him with a happy ending... is just... I don't know, the ending of 4 gets me.

It was a really good ending.

Why can't Holywood just let these sorts of franchises be? Gibson & Glover are both in their 70's I think & as Teelie pointed out, they were 'too old for this ****' 20 years ago.

As much as I love the Leathal Weapon films, if this actually gets made the plot & trailer is going to have to win me over big time to get me to go watch it. #4 really should have been the final hurrah & even that was pushing it.

They shouldn’t have even made #4.

I agree, but I still didn't mind #4.

ANd this isn't a franchise that is going to bring in the young crowd either. At least I don't think so
