Old Glory:
In World War II, scientists were scrabbling for a way to gain the edge over the axis powers. They found it in the Oscilating Gammetron. A device that emitted a radiation frequency that changed who ever was exposed to it. It gave them enhanced strength, invulnerability, speed, the ablity to fly, longevity, and enhanced senses. There was a side effect though, but it was not discovered until five men had been exposed: Insanity. the device was destroyed when four of the five men sank into irreversibly insanity. They were violent and sadistic. Absolutely heartless.
The one exception was Capt. Frank Powers, a career soldier. He was the only soldier to hang on to his sanity and remain loyal. He was set up to be a grand hero, used as a propaganda generating magnet. However, when he saw how the military machine degraded, he gave up the fight. He retired. But on 9-11 the Army asked him to put on his old costume again. He'd barely aged a day since he'd first become "Old Glory". He agreed, so long as he was allowed to do things his way. so desperate were they for help, that they said yes in a heartbeat. Now his plans include forming an untouchables-style unit comprised of old soldiers, young ones he's sure he can trust, and any other super-hero he thinks he can trust.
Sadly, his secret is close to getting out: He didn't escape the side-effect of insanity, but he has struggled against it every day. he fights to keep himself in control.
as much a tale about an old soldier retaking his mantle as it is about the fine line between sanity and madness.
