Do you think that there are other ways to achieve life aside from those seen on Earth?

Life is who you are, Liberty is what you can do, Property is what you make. Cherish all these things, and don't allow anyone to take any of it away.

Good philosophy.

Okay, sorry for stepping on your toes there. Merge if necessary.
No apologies necessary and there was no toe stepping. Just thought since the thread already exists, it's best to continue the discussion rather than start a new one. Unless you feel that the two threads' topic are entirely different.

Entirely up to you. I think they're similar enough to merge. I like discussing both philosophical and physical meanings of life, so that's the idea of this thread.

Okay, we've merged.

I'll answer my own questions to get the convo going.

I believe that life is a very abstract thing to define, my personal belief is that anything that can die, is alive. The requirements for life here on Earth are limited, and I think the concept of being alive is broader than that. I believe in a life energy that dissipates upon death, whether you want to call it a soul or not is up to you (I feel that way).

Do you then believe that breathing constitutes to being alive? For me, being alive means more than just breathing. Being alive means how you live (including your relationship with the people around you and your surroundings) and how you nourish your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state. I think that my life is defined by what I do and how I affect others.

Well, I mean that physically something that lives must die. Whether or not respiration is required, I don't know.

Figuratively, life is so much more. It's something, first and foremost, to enjoy.

It's as hard to define Life to encompass everything that can be attached to it. Just like it's hard to define Love. But I do agree that "it's something, first and foremost, to be enjoyed."

Did you read my first post? Do you have a response for it?

On the value of life? I feel it's the most precious thing we have, but I'm still searching for the best way to express that fully.

Do you think every human life has an equal value or are some more valuable than others?

the MOMENT you take a breath your life becomes priceless

Personally, I feel my life has value, but I would willingly sacrifice it for a certain group of people who include my friends and family, although I may not do so for my parents or grandmother, because they'd want me to keep living if it were me or them. My kid sister? I've always told her that she'd always be safe with me, and I'll never break that promise.

Life itself is precious, but each person will invariably put their own worth on the lives they know of. I tend to go along with the crowd and go by how close the life is to me. It's selfish, but I don't know of many people who'll save a stranger over a loved one. I also put equal weight on the life of all animals, including humans. For example, if there were a fire in my house, I'd save my sister before my cat, but my cat before a stranger, and a stranger before an animal I don't know. It seems weird, but that's how I see it. I'd obviously try to save as many as I can, but I learned very quickly in my field, you've got to do what you can for who you can and not let the failures weigh you down.

I lean towards absurdism, but find the argument against suicide a little lacking. Camus is my faux God:o

Presonally I believe one life is just as precious as the next one. The sad part is not all of us hold enough value on our own life to care about someone else's. IMO a rapist or a murderer doesn't hold enough value on their own life so they lash out.

I do not believe that anyone person is better then the next. No amount of money or charity is enough to buy your way into heaven. If you read and believe the bible it says your actions are worthless, everyone falls short of the glory of God. Therefore we are all equal in God's eyes. A king is no better then a hobo. You may think you can buy a better life, but what you buy are just things that can be replaced. A life can not be.

I am not a richman, but I wouldn't call myself poor either. I love my life, and even though I don't have the best job or nicest house. My family has everything we need. We have each other, a roof over our heads and food on the table at meal time. We don't need much else.

It is a shame that we don't all think the same way. Too many people feel to be worth something you have to have a lot of things. And all they do is go out and buy these things and think they will make them happy and make their life worth something. And when those things don't fill that void they have to go out and get more things. But in the end they are still worthless. They fall short. We as a people need to learn to just be thankful for what you have. The ture value of a man's life is in the people who love him just for being himself.

Suicide is just selfish here in the western world, it transfers all the angst you have to you closest loved ones who are left wondering after you kill yourself.

Does one who wants to kill themselves really have concern for anyone else?

Not here. In some places (Japan I think) suicide is still acceptable and honorable. It's a cultural thing.
