How To Train Your Dragon Live-Action Movie in The Works for 2025 – The Hollywood Reporter
Taking a massive swing, Universal Pictures has put in motion a How to Train Your Dragon live-action movie, with Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, back in the saddle as writer, director and producer.

The feature project is already steps into the development process. Universal has dated the feature for a March 14, 2025 release. And sources also say the casting process is already underway.
Disney’s gonna see this and decide adapting their Pixar stuff is the way to go. Just you watch.

Oh, **** this s**t. **** this in the a** with a 10 foot pole. This can **** right the **** off into the “animation to live action adaptation” hell, where all of these things deserve to go and burn for all of ****ing eternity.

**** you, Universal. And **** you, Hollywood, for your continued devaluing and demonizing of the wonderful medium of animation by perpetuating the stereotype of it being just for kids.

It’s actually kind of intriguing to me to have the same director taking this thing into another medium.

Disney remakes being as iffy as they are, I’d still be there for a live action Incredibles if it was directed by Brad Bird.

That’s like one of the fastest windows for an animation to live action adaptations to go into production.

Will John Powell score this one too?

I once knew somebody who looked like Hiccup. That was years before the first film. When I went to see it, I noticed how much the animated character reminded me about him.
I don't think they should cast him though, he must be 35 or so now lol.

You know this is next.

So, same director of the animated movies.

For a minute I thought this was going to be a fourth film, but in live-action. Bulk up Jay Baruchel.

The only person that could reprise their role in live action would be Gerald Butler, just stick a wig and overgrown beard on him. And Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera look nothing like Hiccup or Astrid.

When has that stopped one of these cartoon to live-action before lol

Uninspired live action Disney remakes aside, I’m actually intrigued by this. Dean DeBlois has done a great job with the series and is clearly passionate about it, so this should be an interesting transition. At the very least, I’m here for all the different types of dragons that’ll be on display on the big screen. I do wonder what the story will be. If it’s a direct remake of the first one or a new story with the same or new characters.

It’s also interesting that DeBlois has not left this series since whenever production started on the first one way before 2010. That’s a long commitment. I hope he wasn’t roped into this and hasn’t been burnt out.

The original movie isn't even 15 years old. The most recent movie isn't even 5. Just why? This is disgusting and just another slap in the face with the continued disrespect to animation. People of all ages love the original. People of all ages are currently enthralled with the Puss in Boots movie. The film industry seems so against the idea of animation as a medium for everyone despite everyone else thinking otherwise. It's beyond frustrating.

At this rate I probably will be more surprised if a live action remake of the new Super Mario movie is not announced before the end of the decade than if it is. :)

Well, for one thing, both of them are way too old to be playing teenagers nowadays.

Already happened in '93. :o

Tom Holland as Hiccup. Zendaya as Astrid. :o

Sarcastic casting aside, I have no issue with live action remakes. Even as a young kid watching Aladdin, I remember wondering what it would look like with real people. If I was an animation filmmaker, I'd be honored to have a live action remake of my work done. I see nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, but I was talking if it was actually a fourth film that in turn was live-action, instead of the director just remaking his original film in live-action.

I think the problem stems when the original filmmakers and writers aren’t credited in the remakes. A lot of these animated films go through storyboard after storyboard with a lot of the rewriting by the animators themselves.

'Aladdin' Writer Unhappy That He Was Excluded From And Not Paid For Disney's Live-Action Remake

I'm excited for this, especially since it has the same director/writer. 2025 will be interesting with this, Superman and Kang Dynasty.

Bulk up Jay Baruchel.
It's so common to think that way. Only seeing one possible actor.
It's a remake of the first film. How is a 40 year old man possible for for a character who's supposedly in his mid-teens?
What do you mean by "bulk up"?
Hiccup is not an action hero with muscles. He isn't even fully grown, too weak to fight with swords. He rather relies on his intelligence. The film pointed that out.
In case you're not joking, I think you want them not not stay true to the original, but to alter the character and the story when it's done live action :)
