Logan's Run

I'm not all that upset at the notion of Singer not doing it, just the potential further delay of the movie it will cause. It might be best for Singer to do a much smaller film in between Superman Returns and it's sequel. Mayor of Castro Street would be a great place to go. I guess I'm one of the few people in the geekosphere who's REALLY looking forward to that. As much as the Logan's Run remake, and certainly more than either Supes or it's sequel.

JoeKosinski.jpg

Joe Kosinski is the latest director to take a stab at remaking Logan's Run for Warner Bros./Silver Pictures, with talks in progress for Jayson Rothwell and Travis Beachman to pen the sci-fi film. The remake of the 1976 film deals with a society that kills their population when they turn 21 and a young man who plans a daring escape on the eve of his fateful birthday.

The film was originally set up with Bryan Singer to direct and write the initial story. Leonardo DiCaprio was also slated to play the lead character Logan.

Kosinski is an award-winning commercial director known for directing the latest Halo 3 commercial 'Starry Night', Gears of War, and several for Nike.

lets pray to God they aren't using anything Dan Harris wrote. Man do his screenplays suck.

^^^

I don't think so. I would say he is a good screenwriter, at least he wrote X2 - the only great movie in his list, which isn't so long. He has enoough time to get more experience, as he is only 28 ;)

Besides, where did you get from that he wrote screenplay for Logan's Run?

Logan's Run Back Up and Running at WB
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
August 21, 2007

Commercial director Joseph Kosinski will make his directorial debut on Logan's Run, the sci-fi thriller being written by Tim Sexton. Joel Silver is producing through his Warners-based Silver Pictures.

The 1976 original starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. It was based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a "runner" and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

The movie is expected to be low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting and hew closer to the book than the 1976 movie. The new film will tackle idea of the "greater good" and people devoting themselves to an ideology blindly, while keeping the novel's concepts of runners, Sanctuary and gangs outside the system.

Bryan Singer was originally attached to direct and had begun previsualization work on the project before he bolted to do Superman Returns for the studio. Flightplan director Robert Schwenke and James McTeigue were helmers that had been associated with the project, which eventually fell off the radar.

Kosinski came into Warners with a presentation that included graphic art and animated previsualization that set the look, color, tone and style of the movie he wanted to make.

Don't know what to say. I guess I'll wait for the trailer.

i'm glad this is finally getting off the ground but i'm not too sure what to think about Kosinski. i've liked the commercials i've seen him do but i have no idea how his directing skills are as far as directing action and acting. hopefully he'll brush up on those areas if he's lacking...

they better not. the whole point of a remake is to do everything RIGHT...

I can see it as The Matrix' standard, low-budget film full of vfx and CGI. It wouldn't cost so much, probably $50-80m.

Logan's Run Lands Carl Erik Rinsch As Director
By MIKE FLEMING | Wednesday May 26, 2010 @ 3:33pm EDT

UPDATE WRITE-THRU: Warner Bros is making a deal with Carl Erik Rinsch to direct Logan’s Run, the remake of the 1976 futuristic science fiction film about a man who tries to outrun a mandatory death sentence before he turns 30.

Silver Pictures' Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing with Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman. Kerry Foster's exec producer.

Rinsch intends to direct the film after he completes 47 Ronin, the Universal Pictures action film that will star Keanu Reeves. That film hasn't been green lit but Hossein Amini is doing a script polish and the film is on track to begin production in January.

Rinsch pitched his own take on Logan's Run, and the studio will soon hire a big writer to draft a version that is closer to the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The age of the protagonist will be closer to the book, where the protagonist realized he was going to be killed on his 21st birthday and fled. The original movie changed the age to be closer to that of the film's star, Michael York. He played Sandman 5, a killer employed to track down and exterminate anyone who tries to escape a mandatory death sentence when they reach a certain age. That's the only drawback of serene life in a domed city that protects the inhabitants who survived a holocaust in the 23rd Century. Overcrowding necessitates adults to choose to become runners who try to survive outside the bubble, or choose the "Carousel"--billed as a rebirth, but actually a death sentence. Sandman 5 poses as a runner, but discovers the outside world is worth saving. He then is pursued by another Sandman.

Though he'll make his feature directing debut on one of these pictures, Rinsch is building more buzz than most new directors and he has come close to some big jobs. He made his name as a protege of Ridley and Tony Scott, shooting commercials for their RSA banner. They set him to direct the Alien prequel at Fox, until Ridley Scott decided to make the film himself. More recently, he was on the short list of candidates to direct X-Men: First Class. Warners has been high on Logan's Run for years. The studio and Silver seemed to have the picture on the fast track with Bryan Singer directing. But he ultimately dropped out of the film.

The project that really put Rinsch on the map at studios is The Gift, a short film that he created for electronics company Phillips, where five directors each made a film using the same few lines of dialogue. Online reports had studios bidding for a movie version of The Gift, but I'm told reliably that the project was never going to be a feature. It certainly made a fantastic calling card for the CAA-repped director.

LOGAN'S RUN Will Be Shot In Native 3D!

Joel Silver knows what he wants, and right now he wants pure, through and through, native 3D. What Silver wants, he usually gets.

I first reported on the possibility of LOGAN'S RUN being shot in 3D back in August of 2007.

From MTV: "I'd like to make 'Logan's Run' [in 3-D]," Silver said. "It's a movie I've always been intrigued with, excited by. We're writing a script now and that should be a big 3-D movie and it should be devised and shot in 3-D. I think if we can pull it together, then it would be."

Carl Erik Rinsch has been confirmed as the director for the Sci-Fi thriller.

I've never been able to sit through Logan's Run all the way through. It just bored me. But then I grew up on movies like Star Wars, so anything less than that I tend to be uninterested in (although Roger Corman's Battle Beyond The Stars is kinda fun). But the basic premise is very sound, so a remake could be very good.

I've never read the novel either. I like the idea that the new movie is going to be more faithful to the book. Generally speaking, when adapting a comic, graphic novel, novel, or TV show to the big screen, the more faithful to the source material the better the movie. Although I think making the cut off age of characters, while faithful to the book, is a little young. Maybe split the diff between the book and the original film and make the age 25. Just a thought.

Ryan Gosling Is Stepping Up To A Studio Tent Pole With 'Logan's Run' Remake
MIKE FLEMING said:
Warner Bros is finalizing a deal with Ryan Gosling to reunite with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn on Logan's Run, the remake of the 1976 futuristic drama about a man who tries to outrun a mandatory death sentence that awaits all 30-year old's. After a distinguished run in mostly independent films, Gosling's making the jump to a studio tent pole. Production starts in the fall.

The directors seat on this movie is like carousel.

It's taken them this long to get a Logan's Run remake yet Hollywood will push a Battleship movie through?

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn Talk LOGAN’S RUN

by Bill Graham Posted:June 23rd, 2011 at 9:10 pm

slice_logans_run_1976_01.jpg

There are a handful of properties that beg for a remake that haven’t found the right combination to get it started. The latest team is star Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson), who think they have finally figured out the errors of the previously potential suitors. Since the mid-1990s, the Warner Bros. property has chewed up and spit out every director Joel Silver could attach to the film, including Carl Erik Rinsch in November. The 1976 original directed by Michael Anderson centered on a future society that put an age cap at 30 to help alleviate the threat of overpopulation and limited resources. A Sandman named Logan 5 has spent his entire life chasing down Runners, but suddenly becomes one himself in a mix up. For what Gosling and Refn think is the key to remaking Logan’s Run today, hit the jump.

The duo sat down with 24 Frames and explained one major diversion that they are making is not strictly following the original film’s technology. Said Refn: “Logan’s Run is dated in the sense that everything came true. They’ve been trying to make it for years with the notion of just trying to remake the original movie. And it has to be rethought.” The technology obviously will have to be updated, but Refn isn’t just stopping there. He seems to be eyeballing what got them to that point in the first place.

“The premise of a society that decides to commit suicide is unique, and I think that’s why everyone still thinks it could work,” Refn told 24 Frames. Even Gosling thinks they have the key to unlock a remake, adding, “We’ll put together a team of futurists and artists and we’ll dream on this world.” As for when the film may begin actual production, they aren’t in any rush. While they will likely be focusing on their newly announced collaboration, Only God Forgives, they will still be working with screenwriter Will Beall on the script for Logan’s Run. “We’re still in the stage of trying to figure out the rules of the road,” Refn said. Gosling also chimed in, saying, “Joel [Silver] said the other night, ‘Take your time and make it good. It doesn’t have to be ready at any point.’”

Of course, for those that have been eagerly awaiting a remake, their time may be running out…

http://collider.com/amazing-spider-man-news-logans-run-ryan-gosling-jetsons-update/103269/

Ryan Gosling’s first collaboration with director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) has been getting great buzz and the two are planning to re-team for a remake of Logan’s Run and the indie drama Only God Forgives. Gosling commented on both projects:
GOSLING: We’re doing Only God Forgives first.
Are you guys still figuring out Logan’s Run and what sort of visual style and tone are you going for?
GOSLING: That’s what we’re trying to figure out. We’re trying to discover the world before we develop the story. We’re asking “What kind of world do we want to be in?” and then we’ll learn what kind of story we want to see within that world. Warner Bros has been really great and [producer] Joel Silver giving us the time to create that.
And I assume that Only God Forgives will be a smaller film as opposed to the sci-fi of Logan’s Run.
GOSLING: Yes. It’s a small…it’s a small budget, I guess. But it’s a…whew. It’s different. With Nicolas, it has to be.

http://collider.com/nicolas-refn-interview-drive-comic-con/104314

So, you and Ryan Gosling really clicked and you’re going to do another project together?

REFN: We’re doing two movies together. We’re doing Only God Forgives in February, and then we’re doing Logan’s Run.

That’s still on?

REFN: Oh, yeah. When I have a script that I’m happy with, that Ryan is happy with, and that Warner Bros. is happy with, then we’ll make the movie.
Are you close to that?

REFN: I’m close to presenting how I would like to make it.

Knowing that sci-fi movies like to over-explain things, would you be able to strip the dialogue from that?

REFN: Well, that’s the big trick. Sometimes over-explaining it is actually what makes it more complicated.

What is it about Logan’s Run made you think that it was due for a remake?

REFN: I’ve always been obsessed with the film, ever since I was little. So, when they called and asked if I was interested, my answer was just, “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!”

Why is it so difficult to get that film off the ground?

REFN: I haven’t been in the other meetings or been around with it before, but I know they’ve been trying to make it for 25 years. I think one of the problems maybe has been that they’ve been trying to remake the original film, which is impossible because it’s already dated. How do you remake something that’s dated, about the future which is much more advanced?

How Nicolas Winding Refn will update Logan’s Run for today’s future

Meredith Woerner — How do you remake Logan's Run? What do you do with Box? Critically adored director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) explained to us how he'll have to alter the original novel for modern day audiences.

We nabbed Nicolas Winding Refn at the Drive roundtables at Comic-Con and asked him about his planned Logan's Run remake (starring Ryan Gosling). He talked about going back to the original novel source material, by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.

How do you update a film like [Logan's Run]? Do you keep Box?

I have done this, I've gone back, and I've seen the movie, I've seen the TV show and I've started to read the novels. I've read the first one. And I'm beginning to get an angle on it that I think could be interesting. I think the challenge with Logan's Run is that the premise is so brilliant, that the payoff will almost always be disappointing. Except, if you come up with something really, really, really, really brilliant.

Do you have that? You're planning on altering something?

I think it needs to be altered, because everything in Logan's Run became true, and more in our society nowadays. So it's thinking "What would Logan's Run feel like if it was written today, about 2,000 years into the future."

How did Logan's Run come true since the book came out?

You can kind of say the obsession with youth culture, the open sexuality, the drug taking. The book [deals with] a lot of sexuality. It was written in the 60s and it had a lot of political undertones. And all that we've gone through. The original film version is very different from the novel. I think the novel has a lot more going on that could be interesting to work with. Not just remaking the original movie. Which I think is the main problem and the reason why [a new film version] was never made. Everybody tried to remake the movie, which itself is dated.

Andrew Baldwin Tapped to Write Screenplay for Nicolas Winding Refn’s LOGAN’S RUN Starring Ryan Gosling

by Matt Goldberg Posted: October 31st, 2011 at 7:32 am

slice_logans_run_1976_01.jpg
The remake of Logan’s Run has burned through numerous directors and writers. Directors Bryan Singer, James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), and Carl Erik Rinsch (the upcoming 47 Ronin) have all been attached in the past, and screenwriters including Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and Will Beall (Gangster Squad) have worked on the script. Hopefully the film has now found its dream-team in Drive director/star duo Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling. The two are re-uniting for the sci-fi film which takes place in a dystopian future where no one is allowed to live past the age of 30. Anyone who doesn’t go quietly is a “runner” and has to be tracked down for extermination.

According to Heat Vision, the project has now hired Andrew Baldwin to take on the screenplay. None of Baldwin’s previous scripts have made it to a finished feature, but he’s been busy selling his work. He gained attention from his Black List script The West Is Dead, he wrote Red Asphalt for director Timur Bekmembatov (Wanted), and Warner Bros. recently picked up his period Yakuza script The Outsider. Hit the jump for more on Logan’s Run.

The approach up until this point for Refn has been to take Logan’s Run at his own pace. He and Gosling are still working on the indie drama Only God Forgives, and they’re trying to find their unique take on Logan’s Run. Refn said of the project back in June:
“Logan’s Run is dated in the sense that everything came true. They’ve been trying to make it for years with the notion of just trying to remake the original movie. And it has to be rethought.”
I haven’t read any of Baldwin’s previous scripts, but hopefully he’s the right man for the job. At least we can rest assured that Refn will be an active participant in the development of the screenplay.

Finally, here’s the trailer for the 1976 adaptation of Logan’s Run:

For years now, Warner Bros. Pictures has been trying to get a remake of the 1976 classic Logan’s Run going, most recently with BioShock creator Ken Levine penning a draft and previously with Ryan Gosling re-teaming with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. Now, Tracking Board brings word that the script for the remake has been retooled to change things up by making the lead character a female. This remains unconfirmed, so check back here for further details.
The 1976 original starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. It was based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a “runner” and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.
It was previously reported that the new Warner Bros. movie is expected to be low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting and hew closer to the book than the 1976 movie, though after countless different screenplays it’s unclear what the plan might be.

I took a flip through the novel once. It's VERY different from the movie, at least from what I could see.

I wonder if they'll follow the movie version or the novel?
