While I agree with you about the other instances, not sure about Locke. Now this is discounting the fact that the writers might not have had all the rules in place by that episode, but I think MIB still could not kill the candidates. What was he going to do with Locke? Not sure. Perhaps the same thing that happened to Rousseau's crew? Not sure if we every got an answer to what happened to them.

But then again, your interpretation could be valid.

This is just my guess, but I think MIB went around impersonating the crew members and making it seem like they were evil and crazy so Rousseau thought they were infected. Then she went and killed the actual crew members. Just an idea I had, though.

He could kill Locke. Because Locke was okay with getting sucked into the hole. He gave up his free will.

Same with Jack & the water. If he had fallen off the cliff then it would have been because he wasn't watching where he was going.

Hurley would have willingly jumped off the cliff.

I wonder if there was other instances. The more I think about it. Every season there was some one that Smokey seemed to try & kill. One of the canidates.

Smokey could not kill them and they could not kill themselves. They had to kill each other. He couldn't kill Locke because Locke obviously did not die. Smokey could have easily killed him.

It couldn't have been smokey impersonating them, because remember when Danielle had that Robert guy at gunpoint claiming he was infected, then when she dropped her gun, he pulled his up to shoot her, but she removed the firing pin, so she shot him. That couldn't have been the smoke monster right?

I think it has to do with manipulation of negative & positive energy.

When Smokey touches some one if directs his energy in his favor. Pushing the decisions that, that person makes go more towards his wants. The same for Jacob.

Now interestingly. Alpert was touched by Smokey first, & Ben was touched by Jacob before Smokey. So even though they were each working for the other. They were actually working in favor of the person that touched them first.

Basically, Richard unknowingly was working in Smokeys favor. & Ben unknowingly was making the right decisions. Even though big Smoke was manipulating him.

No that make perfect sense, its just the guy said he thought Smokey was impersonating Danielles crew, when I'm pretty sure it was smokey dragging them into a hole and touching them... thus making them into smokeybots. because Danielle murdered that dude after he tried to murder her. And unless smokey can play dead like a boss, that was really Robert she blasted in the chest with a gun.

Basically, Richard unknowingly was working in Smokeys favor. & Ben unknowingly was making the right decisions. Even though big Smoke was manipulating him.

This is interesting to me. what exactly made you come to this conclusion? I am going to do a rewatch of all 6 seasons soon, but I don't remember Richard doing anything in Smokeys favor, and I definatly don't remember Ben making any good decisions. Ben not only killed Locke allowing the MIB to take his form, but he also chest stabed Jacob to death allowing Smokey to make his ultimate bad guy moves. And Richard just kind of did nothing. At all. really.
