Thanks for the responses. Interesting.

I see that they are gonna rename it Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey in hopes more people will see it.

For me, there just isn't enough to make me want to go out to the theater to see this. Since I have no idea what plan they have for the DCEU, I have no idea where this even stands, and since this seems to be mainly a Harley Quinn movie with some friends of hers tagging along, it just doesn't have my interest. It's almost as if they thought that the name of Margot Robbie/Harley Quinn alone would get everyone to see the movie.
Birds of Prey is directly connected to DCEU, it follows Harley's character journey from David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

It's just a fun movie with good action with low stakes, something which was missing in both DCEU and MCU. This movie does a good job of "introducing" characters like Black Canary and Huntress, whether we will see them again is not clear yet.

If you are going to watch James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" next year, which also has Harley Quinn, maybe you want to watch BoP which provides some character development to Harley Quinn, though people can entirely skip this movie and you won't miss a thing.

Edit: I saw it and liked it.

That gives people a lot less to talk about, anticipate get excited about and spread the word about. I think this strategy is part of why some of their films will be missed by the audience even while others knock it out the park. When I said I was watching Birds of Prey to work people noone knew what I was talking about.

Agreed, the earlier movies were a mixed bag but since they were marketed as existing in one universe and were leading upto some big event movie (JL) like MCU movies do, people showed-up to watch them in theaters, respective of their RT ratings. Earlier DCEU movies got commercial success but couldn't get critical success (for most part)

Now, they have said that we are focusing on movies as stand-alone entities, so people are not thinking that these are "must see" movies which has resulted in critical success but commercial success is a mixed bag. In a way, it's opposite to what was happening earlier.

The solution is simple, just have a plan to build towards some crossover-movie (they don't have to announce the actual release date for it) and make movies connect loosely, perhaps a after credits scenes from next movie ? Which will get more people interested.

Or get Sue Kroll back as head of marketing lol, if they were great at cutting trailers for divisive films, imagine them cutting non studio meddled, well received films...

I can definitely hear it in The Secret of the Ooze. They've added that weird same voice effect that Arnie had as Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin.
5 years ahead of Joel Schumacher, that movie is ahead of its time. :oldrazz:

I felt the same towards Shazam. Especially with Endgame coming right after. It felt like filler

I feel like they overestimated the response to Harley Quinn in SS especially with her last appearance being almost 4 years ago. They immediately treated her as if she had been loved by general audiences and started planning all these movie vehicles around a character that was being pushed further than where she was with mainstream audiences.

Also not helping things is that like Shazam, "Birds of Prey" is not an IP most of the audience is familiar with or has even heard of. And unfortunately, it seems the public trust or goodwill in the DCEU is not so great enough for a lot of the audience to take a chance on an unknown quantity like that just based on the DC brand.

I also gotta question the R-rating in this instance. I loved the movie, but I honestly don't think toning down some of the more over the top gore and removing the F-bombs would've seriously hurt its quality.

Anyone else thinks Dark Nights: Death Metal looks stupid as hell? The Batman Who Laughs has overstayed his welcome, and I don't know why Snyder keeps trying to turn the JL into a heavy metal band or something.

I'm more than ready for Scott Snyder to move on from DC.
