I think SV dropped the conqueror/cave stuff because of SR, right? When that was in production, they were told to make the show sync up with it little, so they went from a-hole Jor-El to a fairly benevolent one, and switched the silver metal Kryptonian tech to the Donner crystals etc.

As for the S: EO novels... those are so bad. Emo and just plain poorly written (and flat pencils that are somewhat saved by nice and unique colouring) in their own right.

I like the idea of S: AA, but (and I've only read it once), but while it had its positives it was just so... Max Landis-y. And that ain't good. Thank goodness we were spared from a sequel in which Superman was an 'agent of Batman'. Sheesh.

The reason Jor El was that way in Smallville was because Clark kept turning away from his what AI Jor El saw as his destiny, so to that AI which wasn’t a person with emotions it did what it thought it had to to get Kal El to fulfil his destiny. I think that interpretation worked well for the show and tbh I’m glad they did their own thing with it rather than just repeating what was done before .

Also, keeping in mind that the show runners tried to make Jor-El seem sinister at worst and a taskmaster at best to push the conflict on the show and every Kryptonian Clark meets other than Kara was a bad guy, so from his perspective, it makes sense that he was conflicted with that side of him.

I still want to see a Superman and Batman movie in the same spirit as Sky Captain. I think it would be cool to see them in their original time periods.

Just watched this film again. I still have a hard time accepting the wasted potential for this film. MNS had all of the right tools at his disposal. I remember how stoked I was when I first found out that Bruce Willis's character (David Dunn) was in "Split" and how they were building up to the inevitable confrontation between his character and the Beast.

I get that they were trying to go for the whole "this isn't the comics but the real world" tone but having his character die in the manner that he did was such a slap to the face. I don't think the Director fully realizes that he basically spat on one of his greatest films (Unbreakable) as a result of this mess.

I really can't decide on which legacy character was mishandled and wasted the most between David Dunn and Luke Skywalker.

Smallville approached Jor-El as they did because that's how the Donner films portray him. He lures Clark to the Fortress, downloads him with his destiny, and lays out demands like give up your powers or love; you can't have both. You can't authentically engage in humanity in any way. So, the SV writers challenged that and did so by exploring a major literary theme: fate vs free will. It also juxtaposed paternal dynamics with several main characters, Lex in particular. Hence, his father's name: LioNEL. It works within the narrative itself and resolves positively, so overall I think it handled it better than most. My favorite take is MOS, though, when it comes to Jor El.

I also don't recall whatever came of that conqueror storyline, the one where Clark reads the rocket ship that says he is meant to rule the Earth. Seems they dropped that.

I always thought that was him misinterpreting the message. He believed it was telling him to conquer Earth when it was rather about him protecting it so it won't end up the same way Krypton did.

And it could have been, but that wasn't resolved either. It just seemed like an important plot to leave dangling.
