Luc Besson to direct Science Fiction comic Valerian

Jesus... $210 million? I am actually rooting for the film and think it looks interesting but... $210 million?!!

Well technically it's not an original tentpole, but I confess I had no idea the comics existed until it was announced.

Early social media reviews are out.

I'm still waiting for something better but this is the type of movie that would have taken no time to be **** on by people, so that's at least good.

I'm still very much looking forward to this movie.

Got tickets to an early showing but then it got cancelled. Hopefully another gets scheduled.

Our @JimmytotheO just saw @ValerianMovie and calls it "a thing of beauty... incredible world building and star making work from Delevingne!"

#VALERIAN is one of the most bracing, vivacious, alive sci-fi films in years, and may be one of the most electrically gorgeous ever.

Surprised to hear that. I expected this to be a Hindenburg-level disaster and it still very well may be with that budget, but if it's actually good I might redbox it.

For real though, that budget.... I think it'll need a miracle to see a sequel.

EDIT: Just saw this post:

“Valerian” Isn’t As Big A Risk As It Appears
By Garth Franklin

There’s several big gambles at the movies this Summer, but arguably none is bigger than Luc Besson’s independently funded sci-fi comic adaptation “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets”.
Boasting a massive price tag of $210 million U.S. dollars, it would appear on the surface that Besson has staked the future of his EuropaCorp studio on the movie. However, in a new interview with Screen, Besson reveals that the film has already paid for itself and the economic risks involved are minimal:
“Like every film company, we will only greenlight a project if at least 80% of its budget is covered. With ‘Valerian,’ we’ve covered 96% of the budget with pre-sales. The risk to EuropaCorp is 4% of the budget so there’s no actual financial risk. The risk for the company is more one of notoriety. If the film is a big flop, we’ll lose credibility for making these sorts of films. The risk is not financial, but rather human.”
As one of the few original tentpole features opening this Summer, the movie does stand a better chance than expected domestically considering how U.S. domestic audiences are obviously engulfed in franchise fatigue and are staying away in droves this season.
How the reviews for the film play out though will have an impact. “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets” opens on July 21st.

He's basically saying that most film studios do this? Make sure that 80% of the budget is covered?

Actually after seeing more clips from it I begin to like it. I hope it's a good space adventure film.

Also Cara looks far more convincing acting-wise than what I saw from her in other films.

I have one question. Why is the discussion thread for this film in the Misc Film forum instead of in the Misc Comic Book Film thread?

I don't know how accurate it was to the comic but there was also an anime ten years ago.

It was through the anime (which went under the title of TIME JAM) how I was first introduced to VALERIAN 2 years ago. I watched the entire anime (which was a joint French/Japanese production) and I enjoyed it. I never read the comic, but based on the limited research that I did online, the anime wasn't all that faithful to the comic.

Never been a fan of Besson's so unless this gets stellar reviews I'll just wait and rent it,

Have to say I'm disappointed by the snippets I've heard of Desplat's score. A little too light for my tastes, was hoping for something similar to Jupiter Ascending. Oh well.

I'm still going to go see it. It looks like an experience on the big screen, and sometimes you have to support new stuff.

For the same reason Atomic Blonde isn't on there.

Regardless of good reviews, I'm still skeptical about its success at the domestic box office due to its complete lack of star power. Sure, you could have made the same argument for Avatar but that at least had James Cameron and game-changing 3D.

Looking more and more like it was David Ayer's fault for Enchantress.

Although I will say she pretty good as the dirty Witch version. Its just as June Moon and the cleaned up look..:csad:
