Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) is returning to the sci-fi genre with a big project he's planning on shooting in 2012 and 2013 for a release in 2013 or 2014.

He told French radio station Europe 1 (via Fantasy.fr) of his plans to direct the project and that he's currently in the design phase for the creatures.

Not many more details were revealed other than that the technology used for James Cameron's Avatar was an inspiration to take on a new sci-fi film.

I love the 5th Element so I'm a bit excited for this even though they haven't said what it's about.

I too share in the excitement. I hope he can capture the magic of the Fifth Element.

f..... yeah. this is great news.

i hope he does something different then the 5th element. its about forward movement. if he wants to do the same movie with a different cast then dont even bother.

AMEN!

amazing news!

but 2014!??... is he trying to be james cameron or something?..cause thats not a road i want to see him on lol

Well lets hope the world doesn't end so we can see what he's got planned. Hopefully it involves Jean Reno. :o

If its massive, I wont be surprised.

Originally, The 5th Element was a 300+ page screenplay that was eventually cut in half, with the half that not used being the basis for a 2nd movie (that never happened obviously. Im sure Besson and Jovovich splitting had something to do with that)

He did Jeanne d'Arc / Joan of Arc with her the year later.
Also, they are not teens ( no offence to the teenagers ) for breaking of over something that futile.

Returning to Scifi genre ? Because Arthur and the Minimois isn't fantasy/scifi ?

My preference would be for this to be a straight-up 5th Element sequel, but I think I'll be disappointed.
