I don't think it's the same as Hiddelston Or Mackie. They are prominent serial characters. The extent of Woodards characters seem less prominent

She will be playing a prominent character in Luke Cage though. The people who watch that show will more than likely have watched Civil War too.

Alfre Woodard isn't just some no name actress that people will see one moment and forget the next. She's a very established actress that's won numerous awards and been a fixture of film and television for decades.

I know who Woodard is. I just don't think it's a big deal. A walk on part on a movie, a villain in the tv show. Stuff like this has happened before. She is still not the same as Mackie or Hiddelston playing a new character

The same could be said about Sousa in the Avengers.

The important question is how big her role is in Civil War. Anthony Mackie obviously has had a very big, very memorable role in the movies.

It's minimal.
One scene.
Granted, it is a speaking part, so she's more likely to be remembered by the GA than Enver would be for Avengers. Especially since she's such a well known and respected actress. But, the part is very small...

I think Enver technically had a speaking part too, but it's been awhile since I saw Avengers.

Apparently it is supposed to be Marvel's version of The Wire and personally I can't wait. However, at the same time with Luke Cage as far as villains go I think we could see Spidey villains showing up in future seasons depending on how long this series lasts since Spidey villains coincide with Luke Cage too.

I can see Luke opening up the heroes for hire at the end of the season.

I think it was a huge mistake for them to make that comparison.

The wire is arguably the most well written show ever.

I'm OK with the comparison because the comparisons in the other shows were equally ambitious:

Daredevil - The French Connection
Jessica Jones - Chinatown

IIRC, Daredevil also compared itself to The Wire, but I assume this show is thinking more seasons three, four, and five while DD would be season one (in other words, the political and street life aspects rise to the front in Luke Cage as opposed to just the crime aspects).

Even if they fall short, it's best to set their ambitions high.

I don't think it's mistake, just a silly comparison.

Obviously I think Luke Cage will be good, but it's not gonna touch The Wire. It just isn't. And I don't think anyone really expects it to.

I dont get why bring it up, but I dont think it really did anything good or bad to the show's perception.

Pundits basically compared Luke Cage to The Wire in terms of it being a superhero show like The Wire in terms of its hood setting and the overall tone/mood

Yeah, they weren't comparing to the quality of The Wire, but rather the tone of that series. They said it was going to have a Wire feel to it, it's inspired by it. Not just someone boasting or trying to hype it up

One could say that Marvel's version of A New Hope was Guardians of the Galaxy

Yeah you're right but Luke Cage if anything is possibly one of the most hyped shows on Netflix even though it hasn't even debuted yet but at the same time Luke Cage if he were in the events of Civil War I wonder whose side he would be on

it will be as good as the wire. This makes you mad?

I wonder which other villains we'll get for Luke Cage

With Luke Cage I mean it is obvious we will get a crossover with Iron Fist and Daredevil and possibly even The Punisher but at the same time Jessica Jones showing up also makes sense but if Kingpin were to show up even in a guest spot on Luke Cage's solo TV series then to see Luke in a fight with Kingpin he would for sure kick Kingpin's ass

No, it won't. But that's hardly a slam, is it? I don't expect ANYTHING in my lifetime to be as good as The Wire.

Overall, I don't have a problem with the quote since I think he meant that the tone and themes of the show will be inspired by The Wire.

I think it is pretty clear The Wire comparison was in regards to the themes and tone of the show.

A superhero in a Wire type setting show could be great. Luke Cage is a man of the people type superhero and would very much fit in with that world.

That's extremely subjective.

That's extremely subjective.

It really isn't. You know why The Wire is regarded as one of if not the greatest television show in history? Because David Simons' experience as a crime journalist gave it a perspective and authenticity that crime dramas in any medium usually lack.

For something like that to happen again you'd need a perfect storm of talent, first hand knowledge, and intelligence.

I am aware of that, yes. I just don't believe that any of us can foresee the future and make a general comment that nothing in this lifetime will be as good as something else without being subjective.

That being said, I think people are taking this Wire comparison a little too far; they just meant that the tone will be similar.
