The Force Awakens Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata

Was it her voice in the most recent tv spot?

Been hearing Ahsoka rumors

Wasnt there a rumor that
Finn goes to train with her at the end of the movie as Rey does with Luke?

Leia, Poe, Maz, and Finn all stay behind at the Resistance and wave goodbye when Rey and Chewie and BB-8 take off in the Falcon to go to Luke. That is the last thing those that stay behind do that is documented in the leaked documentation that's been written about. Maz's castle on Takodana was destroyed in the middle of the movie, so she seems to have nowhere to go.

The question is... was she a peer of Luke's? I don't think she was a student. Was she from the Old Republic?

From the EW article.

“Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time,” he says. “She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.”

“I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do,” Abrams says. “I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you’ll see how it plays out.”

“I wanted to do the creature as a puppet originally, but once we figured out the things that she was required to do, it felt like [performance capture] was the way to go,” Abrams said.

“Maz needed to look and feel and be just like one of those creatures. And given her mobility, and given the role that she played, it became clear that that was one creature where we should use the tool of CG,” he says. “But the performance was all Lupita. She was there on set, and we did capture sessions afterwards as well, and I can’t say enough about working with her.”

Sorry for the bump, but I need to comment on her in this role:

- As I said in the general Star Wars thread, I think she'll be more well known for this role than as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave. Although she's been doing CGI and Motion Capture, she's been promoting the film.

Her career was pretty much unknown after she won an Oscar. Now she's going to be in one of the biggest movies in the world.

Outside of Lupita, Zoe Saldana and (thanks to her role as Moneypenny) Naomie Harris, how many of those black actresses in Hollywood would jump at the chance to appear in a major blockbuster film in a major role? All of them if they had the chance to I think. But because they don't get that chance, many of them go into TV.

She was overhyped (the reps of TFA did that lot, turns out). She was better than Snoke in terms of design and CGI (as well as acting), but she was merely an exposition, Yoda-like device.

Maz initially felt jarring because she's CG character, but Lupita brought a certain warmth to the character that turned me around. I look forward to learning more about her.

Yeah, Lupita saved the character. Adding some humor (different to pre-reveal ESB Yoda) to her was nice, too.

I really liked Maz, it was a little jarring with her being CGI but the voice work brought her to life and I liked the glasses and facial texture in the close-ups.

An hilarious moment from her:

[BLACKOUT]
Maz: Where's my boyfriend?
Han: He's checking out the Falcon.
Maz: I like that Wookie...
[/BLACKOUT]

My favorite new character. Even though she wasn't in it for very long, she left s hell of an impact. She was adorable, charming, and warm, and I didn't have any problems with the CGI on her.

I feel like they should have reworked her voice in post-production. Make it less normal.

She had a small but important role in this one.

Lupita was wonderful as Maz.

For some reason, I really love her Maz voice. A sense of world weariness but good humor and wisdom.

Origin of the code name "Rose" explained:

The filmmaker told his hometown newspaper that his late high school English teacher provided much of the inspiration for the wise space pirate Maz Kanata.

“The character of Maz was originally based on the great Rose Gilbert,” Abrams told the Palisadian Post.

“We really wanted the story to feel authentic, despite being a wild fantasy. I mentioned Rose in an early story meeting as a sort of timeless, wise figure that I’d actually known in my life.”

I know Maz is 1,000 years old, but personally I wish they had just use Lupita and then add some makeup and prosthetic to make her seemed old, or maybe create a backstory where her species (who were extinct long ago) can be nearly immortal and still regain their youth, much like Tolkien's elves in LOTR. I don't like the CGI on Maz, quite frankly.

Yeah I feel that way too. Her lines and delivery were fine.

But visually she looked like

I'll agree with this. I like the character of Maz, but I still don't understand the point of casting a beautiful actress like Lupita and turning her into a shriveled-up CGI orange. Prosthetics would have been better.

Exactly. Wasting a beautiful actress like her for only her voice on a 1,000 alien who looks like an orange is a huge misstep. They should've hired Betty White instead, who can probably add her own brand of humor to the role. Lupita should have had a role where we can see her face.

While I admit it was my first thought as well, it came to mind that I was underselling her role as an actress and put more value in her looks than I should have. I'm perfectly fine with her role as is, and will save the Twi'lek fantasies for my dreams. :o
