Making Costumes?

Here's my mask and hat:

jokerscartest.jpg

I'd post pictures of the rest of the costume, but I've still got to dye and make some size adjustments to my trench coat, and I need a scarf and some pants.

P.S. Credit goes to OctaviousINC, for showing me where to get the mask.

I would definitely follow OcatviousINC's advice and go with the white closed-face spandex hood (found here at the bottom of the page) and put the design on yourself.

That's fantastic work. Your the 1st I've seen to do the movie mask and you couldn't have done it better. Can't wait to see the whole costume finished mate!

Thanks, man. The funny part is, all the design is made of is magic marker with water blotted edges. :hehe:

See, this is unfair. A Silk Spectre outfit will not bode well during March. Not only that, it really isn't that badass. Girls get the but end of every dress up stick, I swear. I would love to dress up as Rorschach, but somehow I see it turing out to be incredibly creepy when I take off my mask and reveal that I am a girl. Couldn't Laurie at least where a coat with her costume sometimes? <_<

I'm sure I could always dress up as Joey the cab driving lesbian or Walter's prostitute mother. Awesome.

Yeah go for it. I mean who's to know your of the fairer sex?
It's not like Rorschach ever takes his mask off in public voluntarily anyway.

Haha! I'm completely with you on this one. If we want to go as actual female characters from Watchmen, our choices are DECIDEDLY limited.

I am all for a female Rorschach though! I think it would be spectacular.

...Maybe I'll go as Civilian Clothes Laurie. Lol.

See it isn't fair! Even going as civilian clothes Rorschach is awesome cause he wears very specific things. Or even Dan! Any of them. But Laurie? No. Boring sweaters with a belt. Meh to her.

I know!! The men are so DISTINCTIVE, and the women are blaise, and that puts us between a rock and a hard place.

So, kudos to your femme-Rorshach!

Now I need an idea. Haha.

i was going to make a Rorschach costume too, but at this point it seems like everyone is doing it. Maybe I'll go a different route. I look more like the comedian anyway.

I'm trying to make a Rorschach costume soon but the mask is going to be the hardest part. I gotta find someone who can help me.

Im actually going to attempt to make a Silk Spectre costume. But its hard to find pieces that actually work.
Ive found thigh high boots but they arent as high as they should be.
Latex leotards are hard to come by as well. I can always buy latex material in the right colors and my grandmother knows how to sew...but that would need a lot of explaining.

I was thinking about buying seperate pieces. Like a yellow leotard and a black swimsuit like this http://store.americanapparel.net/rnt30.html and black latex gloves...hmm Im not sure. I dont want to look stupid.

Ha, maybe Ill go along as a female Rorschach.

Finally finished dying the trench coat.

It was light-beige when I got it. Took a couple dye sessions to get it the right color, but I'm happy with the results. Still missing the scarf and pants, though. :cmad:

Lookin' good, Jack. I'd imagine the pants shouldn't be too hard to find.

For you female Rorschach's out there...a few weeks ago I was at H&M, and they had a few different colors of stripped pants. They are sort of a stiff/cotton mixture, really comfortable actually. I'm pretty sure I saw purple but at the time time I didn't think anything of it. If you are looking for the pants, might want to give them a try, see if they still sell 'um.

I can hook you up with good hat intel, but these lids are kinda pricey! Check out Miller Hats, www.millerhats.com, and Peters Brothers Hats, www.pbhats.com. I have 3 Miller hats, and they are all excellent, in my opinion. The one I wear most is a dark grey fedora of their Baldwin style. It has a teardrop crown, taller in front than back, which I just think looks the best, and about a 3" brim. For a Rorshach hat, you'd want a smaller brim so the crown appears taller. I'm a pretty good sized guy, so typically, I'd want a wider brim. I'd still wear a Rorshach lid, anyhow, even w/o being in the full getup, cos I'm a retro/film noir/pulp/nut.
I've actually contacted Peter Bros hats about making me a Rortshach number, & sent them movie stills, and a graphic novel picture as well of the guy. They'll custom make me one, but it'll cost $200 + $20 S&H. PB also custom makes Indy hats, western hats, and about any kind of lid you can dream up. Their stuff is primo, but you bloody well pay for it!
My Miller fedora more closely resembles one like The Spirit wears in the old comics. I do think, however, they probably have smaller brimmed ones that look alot like Rorshach's. A Miller fedora will run you between $90 & $130. They're good hats. I've beat the crap outta my fedora & it just keeps taking it! I've purposely worn it mowing lawns just to sweat in it & get it more broken in, it's survived multiple shaping attempts by idiots who, thankfully, didn't ruin it. It's survived some pretty ate up shapings by me before I did it right using steam from a tea kettle. I tweaked the crown shaping, front pinch (I prefer a tighter pinch), and bent the front of the brim down. I basically took what I remembered of some hats I saw some tough mugs wearing in old crime pictures on TCM and based my shaping on that. Worked out really well, too! I also did a way better job of shaping my $300 Resistol cowboy hat than any of the mopes in the western clothing stores did.
If you're looking for a swell, detective style, caped back, double breasted trench coat; I'd try Sierra Trading Post, London Fog, and even Ebay, believe it or not. I scored a sweet, tan coat from Sierra for about $60. I got a cherry, mint condition, black London Fog number off Ebay for about $65-70. Both were a steal! The Sierra one is my routine wear, almost "beater" coat. Like my fedora, it's treated somewhat callously at times, but it still looks great. Has a sweet, really warm zip out liner, too. The London Fog does, too.
As you can tell, I find this kind of thing fascinating, hence my rambling on & on. Miller Hats, & Peter Bros. Hats (if you've got the dough!). Good luck!

Hey, great costume! What kinda lid did you use? Also, is it easy to see out the hood? I'm going to order a few of those hoods, but I didn't know if I should get cream, white, or grey for my Rorshach getup.
For pants, I'd recommend some dark khaki chinos from LL Bean or Woolrich. LLBean chinos are my "40's"/tough mug/retro/noir/Indy-esque look pants. LLBean may also have a scarf to suit you, as well. Old Navy also often has alot of good threads on their site. You could get away w/ some olive or dark khaki, or brown cargoes, even, if they weren't overly military/tactical in appearance.
Some of the motorcycle sites have nice scarves. Namely, the sites more attuned toward vintage type bikes/choppers, such as the old school Brit bikes. I've seen sweet, white silk scarves for very reasonable prices. You could also just cruise into your nearby fabric/craft store & buy you a length of material to suit you either pre-cut for you or take it home & do it yourself. We have a Jo-Ann craft store nearby & it has loads of cool stuff like that.
If you got any good intel for me on Rorshach or any other pulp/noir/horror costumes; fire away. I'm wondering what a good resource for the proper gloves would be for a Rorshach/Spirit/Mister Mystery/Shadow/Spider type look.

You could always be a female Marv, lmao. Or one of the Old Town girls in Basin City. Get some fringed chaps, cowboy boots, and a lasso & be Nancy onstage.
