Horror Malignant | James Wan

You answered your own question. He wanted to make a movie like this and the studio let’s him make whatever he wants.
You make it sound like that's a bad thing...

It’s not. But VileOne was implying Wan made this movie not of his own choice.

This is not a good movie, but damn if it wasn't interesting! He's made better movies but this is probably my favorite out of the sheer idea of it. I gotta give it to Wan, I've never seen anything like this in a horror film and I appreciate the big swing.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but the schlocky stuff that people are laughing about kind of went over my head. This movie just has a bad structure with a passive protagonist. The schlocky stuff was just baffling or I was taken aback. I lean towards Wan played this all straight and it didn't come together. I don't think he's trolling us. It's a bad script with cool and wild ideas and just the right magical combination where I can see why this can be enjoyed in a schlocky way.

I legitimately enjoyed the twist. Didn't see it coming and it's the best stuff in the movie. Apart of me thinks this could be remade in 20 years and improved but another part of me thinks you lose this alchemy.

However you see it, it must be appreciated for its sheer ambition. The fact this movie seems to be getting these sort of reactions is to be commended. You don't see this sort of thing on a studio level so much.

Wan has always made solid movies but I've never been crazy about them. But if he carries this over into Aquaman 2, I can be into it!

Well that was quite a rollercoaster of a film LOL Mr Wan really did display why he's one of my favourite directors around at the moment The camera work was A1. I absolutely loved the music design in this film. Definitely has a throwback feel to the 80's with Sam Raimi being a inspiration.

7/10 for me. I wasn't really prepared for the Twist especially with that imagery.... Honestly i heard alot of Wtf's including myself lool Just disturbing to watch.

Saw this again in theaters with a buddy. While I still enjoyed it, I didn't care for it as much the second time, the last act bothered me a little more.

I liked how the dormant parasitic teratoma twin knew all these expert matial arts skills.

It was watchable dumb fun. Not the best of Wan's horror movie outpout, but it might prove to be the most rewatchable.

The only major misstep I think Wan made was the last 3 minutes.

Early career Wan would have really killed the sister and left Madison a prisoner in Gabriel's head. The sappy ending just clashed horribly with the rest of the third act, and with the knowledge that Madison's future is bleak as hell. Sure, Madison saved her sister and mom, but she's going to die in prison. No jury, judge, DA, or the FBI is going to let her go free after slaughtering 50 cops, nurses, doctors, and civilians. Wan should have went all in and let Gabriel succeed and escape or end the film with Gabriel locked in a mental institution while he torments Madison inside his head.

Damn I was not expecting this to be as fun as it was. The trailer definitely didn’t do it justice and made it look more like a straightforward haunting/possession flick but this was a blast. Right from the opening scene, it had an unexpected camp, b-movie vibe which really surprised me. Wan definitely delivered with this one .

Regarding the twist, watching the trailer, I suspected that it might all be in her head but never would’ve predicted this is how :funny:. Honestly, it was a pretty fun twist and it was handled really well. Lots of cool clues for you to figure it out like how her head starts bleeding again after each murder, when you first realise that Gabriel is actually moving backwards, and that scene at the police station where she talks to Gabriel on the phone and you see her head in the mirror behind her. I thought that scene was great foreshadowing. You do figure it out before the movie actually tells you but that’s fine and it doesn’t make it any less fun.

I had a lot of fun with this. I can't believe there are some people that are unsure if this movie's tone was completely intentional. OF COURSE it was! Self-aware camp can be a very fine line and I think this movie landed on the right side of it.

This was almost like a prank of a film that was unmarketable, but kudos to Wan for using his studio clout to trojan horse this thing. Love it :funny:

I finally got around to watching this on HBO Max last night. I somehow managed to remain unspoiled and I've never been so happy. :hehe: I feel like this would've been the movie James Wan made in 2008 if Dead Silence and Death Sentence were successful at the box office. Loved it.

Enjoyed the hell out of this in a "WTF am I watching" kind of way! I love James Wan!

Ugh that character was so annoying and insanely obnoxious. Usually the rude ones get killed and yet she survived the whole film through the powers of sheer b*tchiness.

I really enjoyed it also. Although it was quite plan daft in places. As good as the action scenes were put together the monster turning into jackie chan was abit silly. A solid 7 out of 10 for me in enjoyment.

I feel like I've seen the plot from Tales from the Crypt or Outer Limits... Something like that.

Well, I think the idea of…

a tumor that controls your body to murder has been done with the hand I think on Tales from the Crypt with Don Rickles or like Total Recall attached to the stomach. I just don’t think I’ve seen the back of the head which makes it all the more hilarious! Especially running backwards lol

I remember a plot where a woman had black outs due to a car accident and it turned out she had a twin who would come out when she would sleep or black out. I can't remember if they killed or not. I remember she ended up killing herself so the twin can live.

Wow, I’ll have to check that out lol
