Horror Malignant | James Wan

I remember a plot where a woman had black outs due to a car accident and it turned out she had a twin who would come out when she would sleep or black out. I can't remember if they killed or not. I remember she ended up killing herself so the twin can live.

that sounds SO familiar to me too

One of the worst movies I've seen from the last few years. Yikes.

I was looking for camp and laughs but I didn’t really get that. Most of it was taken too seriously for such a concept.

And when they leaned in on the ridiculous, I didn't laugh with it. My reaction was mostly like "this is so stupid" but not in a way where I'm giggling like crazy when something off the chain happens. Those moments fell flat.

I was also expecting it to be really creative but most of the movie felt like a knock off Invisible Man.

Won't be watching future James Wan projects. I've only enjoyed his two Conjuring movies and even those were overrated. Muschietti, Wan, Flanaghan aren't even close to being horror saviours. I find them quite bland, gimmicky and tonally uneven.

It's a weird movie. I feel like if you're in it for the camp and schlock you will get some laughs out of the last 30 minutes or so but getting to that point means sitting through a lot of boring parts where it feels like the movie is taking itself too seriously. And if you're a Wan fan and you want something like Insidious or Conjuring, the campy ending kinda ****s all over that.

So yeah I don't necessarily have any strong negative or positive thoughts on it but I do think it's weirdly unique. You don't see that many movies like this, especially not from a studio.

That’s fair. I just think it’s a tonal mess and doesn’t know what it wants to be. So I’m not understanding what ppl are talking about when they say “it’s intentional camp! Just have fun with it!” when it’s really not that kind of movie at all. And when it is campy, it’s nothing that funny.

I'm pretty much thinking the same thing though. You can split this movie up and you can get the Insidious/Conjuring 'people in big spooky house' stuff that I don't personally care for, and you can get a campy ending that goes off the rails that will have you laugh as a viewer. But together it's kinda like oil and water.

I would rather watch a creepy atmospheric horror movie that gets under my skin, or Evil Dead II. Malignant doesn't really succeed at either elements.

I just watched part of it online yeah I can see how this episode of OL was an unofficial basis for Malignant.

I was today years old when I realized that Celldweller did the theme music for the opening credits. So cool.
