Man jailed for Spiderpig insults

A man has been jailed for breaching the peace by singing Spiderpig from The Simpsons Movie at police officers.
David Mullen was sentenced to three months for the incident and calling an officer "ginger" in a police van.
Mullen, 22, from Blairgowrie, claimed he was singing the ditty, performed by Homer in the cartoon, because it was the ringtone on his mobile phone.
He was given a further eight months in prison for assaulting a police officer and breaching a curfew while on bail.
'Appalling road'
Homer sings Spiderpig to the theme of Spiderman while walking a pig across the ceiling in The Simpsons movie.
Mullen sang the song to officers on 25 July while sitting in the back of a police van after being involved in a fight in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
Solicitor Paul Ralph, defending, said: "He started the song and that was the origin of the joke, but things went further. He felt he had not done anything to be apprehended for."
Mullen breached his curfew on 30 October and assaulted a police officer on 2 November.
Mr Ralph told Perth Sheriff Court that Mullen, of Harriet Row, had been abusing alcohol since the age of 12.
Sheriff Robert McCreadie said: "It is tragic that you have taken alcohol for almost half of your life. You have a dreadful record for a man of 22. "It is now your decision if you want to continue down the tragic and appalling road you have chosen for yourself."

Well, this thread is at least mediocre in a consistent way.

In the words of Ace Ventura:

" LEH-HEW-ZHE-HER":whatever:

I find the ginger insult to the more hilarious part of this story.

Wait... What? He got put in jail for 3 months for being annoying? We're not talking about doing anything but being annoying... And at the end of the article is seems alcohol is to blame.

For being annoying? That's non-sense. My friends aren't always drunk but sometimes they get annoying. There's no good reason someone should be jailed for insulting a police officer or annoying a police officer.

I work in law enforcement, so I say this with all seriousness...I think I would have died laughing.

That is the problem with police. You piss them off even a little and they arrest you. This article just proves that they have too much power.

This article proves that one police officer got pissed and may have overstepped his authority. That is all.

and suppose he shot him. Would that still be a mere overstep of authority?

Actually it doesn't prove much of anything. Newpapers tend to emphasize the bits that they think will get attention and ignore the information that won't.

Hmm...that is a dumb question.
My point was that you made a very broad assumption about a large group of people. This article is about one person. Thats all police are-people. Police can be good or bad, no different than any other person.

i get that. But neither of you have really read my "stupid" question. What if the police officer had shot him. It has happened before, and those officers are either charged or not. It is still an abuse of their power, and yes, I am lumping them all together, because it exists in everyone.

I dont get it.
I could say "what if" the suspect tried to attack the officers.
I could say "what if" spider-pig showed up to save the day.

I dont understand why you are even using this.

What are you saying "exists in everyone"? I said people are good and bad and police are not exempt from that.

And when you say "it has happened before" are you saying police have shot a person for pissing them off?
Im not saying that has never happened, but I would say with plenty of confidence that would be an anomaly.

Am I the only one who noticed that the police had already arrested him for battery, and that he sang the Spiderpig song while he was already in the police van? Call me crazy, but maybe the fight that got him arrested in the first place is what got him the 3 months. Because I don't know much about the British legal system, but I reckon if it's anything like the US legal system, then it's the courts instead of the police who decide what sentence to pass down on criminals.

Let's hear it for the misleading article, folks.
