I thought SR was criminal. I hated it. I wanted to like it, but Singer just doesn't get Superman. He just made Superman a Superhero version of himself...which was just wrong.

Agree 100 % .

I just got back from seeing Superman and I thouht it was really great. I'm not going to vote yet cuz I haven't seen POTC 2 yet so I'll give my opinion on the pirates later.

Great job by Singer on Superman & Brandon Routh did awsome too.

Well, this poll is about who will win box office, Superman or Pirates 2. Seeing how Pirates 2 has grossed more money (55m) in its opening day than SR did in their opening weekend last week (54m), it's pretty obvious who will win the box office war.

I liked both movies. And I didn't think Pirates 2 would make THAT much, so I was shocked when the news hit. Good for them. They deserved every penny because the movie was that good. The comedy and action fit, and the story flowed nicely. People way over-estimated Superman, IMO. Pirates was still fresh in people's minds while Superman wasn't. Come on, it's been years since we last saw Superman. Pirates 2 made more than Superman's opening weekend in a single day. It owned everything in sight and there's no stopping it.

Spidey is sure gonna have a hard time beating it. I wish Raimi and his crew all the best luck.

I look forward to see the final results for Pirates 2 in the overall opening weekend BO. It's going to be huge.

Never underestimate pirates. :o

Hey Mr Lex Luthor, nice avatar. :) I really love that scene from Astonishing X-Men.

Also- please use the poll so we can see how the results come out.

I know this debate has been everywhere now. So, thought I would just put into one arena for fans to fight it out in. Who wins? Superman? Jack Sparrow? Time will only tell. Take your bets.

My opinion:

1. Superman Returns
2. Pirates

EW and Roeper predicted SR as the biggest blockbuster of the summer

Pirates 2, a sequel to a film that made around 300 mil. Sequels typically don't make more money than the first one- unless it looks alot better. This looks the same and just- the same.

As I said, still will see it. But, I see it as another sequel that doesn't beat the original so- 300 mil or under. These 400 mil predictions- not going to happen. A sequel doesn't make that much money.

Also, Batman Begins was Imax- but the theater didn't matter.

SR is IMAX 3D which provides for a better theater experience. "Flying" with the man of steel. Theater goers who go only once in a long while- obviously SR. Pirates is a rent for those only once in a great while theater goers. Both will bring in the same number of teen audiences or around the same number.

But, SR ranges from 8 year olds to 80 year old grandparents. Not to mention that there are ALOT more hardcore Supes fans than any other super hero who will go see it more than 10 times and even more than that!

POTC has one movie and a ride behind it, not that big of a fan core audience in comparison.

As said, I'll be seeing POTC twice or three times. So, I'm a fan. But, I'm more of a Supes fan. I want to see both do well. But, Supes is obvious #1 and Pirates is obvious #2. Both great, but Supes is super great!

The first Pirates drew audiences in because:
1. First of it's kind
2. Pirates movie in a long while
3. New pirates movie look

The sequel looks like a carbon copy of the original. Bringing nothing really new in. So, while it will be good- it won't be as good. I've read the book and while it's good- it's not great. The first one was original, the second is more of a "seen that already."

Question: To those who think it will be a hit, do you know alot about it- or just what you've seen in trailers?

Supes will get the better reviews. POTC is alright, but not great. Word of mouth will show this. Supes great. Pirates good- but, like any sequel- it's a sequel that doesn't bring anything really new to it and doesn't beat the original.

More teenage guys will go to Superman than Pirates of the Carribbean. I can state that as a 88% possible fact.

Girls- don't know what they think of Routh. But, the love story will bring a lot of girls in.

Kids- Superman pajamas, Superman toys, etc. - POC is disney, but Superman is Superman! I already see kids with Superman toys and kids pretending to be Superman. Holloween: Lots of kids will be Superman. Etc. Kids- Superman.

Teenage & young Girls- Our real and only threat. But, I don't know in this area yet. But- SMALLVILLE is more than likely to bring in alot of the teenage girl audience.

Adults & Grandparents- grew up with Superman

Thus, SR has the larger audience- and most of this audience is fans. Because, let's face it how many people do you know who aren't Supes fans because of one thing or another?

Age over fad and not great sequel. I've read the POTC2 book- not much too it, just average sequel, Good, not great. Don't seeing it getting phenomenal reviews, only great. Read the Supes book as well- way better story, classic is back- phenomenal reviews.

Pirates will kill pirates. Pun intended. It will still be #2, but pirates will not kill Supes- pun still intended.

Superman 3D Imax Experience will draw LOTS in and most likely be the way most theater viewers see Superman Returns.

Pirates 3 viewers (8) Supes 2 (12- Imax)

Pirates= 21
Supes= 24

That extra money adds up quickly. Thus, even if Pirates gets more viewers. Imax will definitely still make Supes- #1.

This summer you will believe that a man can fly!

I've said my piece, what's your opinion and take?

Please note that this board is NOT for bashing. But, to put down your thoughts on what movie will be #1. Both will be great, definitely in #1 and #2. Which will be #1?

Man your prediction was so wrong. Captain Jack owns Superman and the box office!!

We'll see how POTC does in the long run.

For those out there saying that Jack Sparrow is more popular than Superman, the argument is really quite flawed. Sparrow is relatively new, whereas Superman has been around for over 60 years. And don't forget the fact that the \S/ is one of the world's most recognized symbols.

I'm very curious to see what POTC's "staying" power is. I really would like to know how long it can stay in the public eye.

As for the Superman/Jack Sparrow debate. Why don't we wait a bit. If Jack Sparrow is still around in 60 years, then the debate can begin.

Sparrow can't be around in 60 years b/c Depp won't be alive. He will obviously become one of my most memorable movie characters and will make a list like that when AFI does one.

How old is Depp now? He may still be around in 60 years. Well, he'll be 103 in sixty years. But you never know, he may still be around then.

I mean, George Burns lived to be 100.

Oh boy, DMC totally annihilated SR. Almost three times bigger than its first-three-days BO. Thanks, War Party.

He could live to be 103 considering the advances in medicine, but I don't think he'll be playing Sparrow for 60 more years.

And that's why movies like "You Got Served" are #1 at the box office? The truth is you can spin critics reviews 1 of 2 ways:
Wow the critics agree, my movie rocks.
Wow the critics don't agree, but I never listen to them anyways because they don't know what they are talking about.

I could care less either way. I was just posting it as a statement of fact or for informational purposes. I am probably going to see Pirates just not this weekend.

But with top grossing movies, critics usually agree with the amount of people going to see it. There are few exceptions.
I could careless on what critics say. i've never stopped seeing a movie i wanted to see cause a critic said it was bad. and people that do they really need to get a brain and think for themselfs.

Everybody knows who supes is and he'll always be 1 of the most recognised pop-culture icons but you have reconsider your definition of popularity. Right now, Jack Sparrow maybe more popular than supes for the simple fact that he may be more likable, more entertaining and considered to be a poster child for sexy-hunk in the eyes of women of all ages across the globe not to mention society's views and perceptions of characters ficticious or not, pesistantly fluctuate, therefore, it is possible that sparrow may indeed be more popular than supes regardless of their respective current life spans.

I'm pretty sure you were one of the many saps I schooled when trying to confront me about my opinions of the spidey movies a while ago.

You know what you need to do?

You need to officially shut the hell up. You sat here for the past two weeks and said that Pirates 2 would only make $90-100 million because, in your words "it was 150 minutes long". And yet, here you are spatting how you were right about something.

:o

Please. YOU ARE NOT A BOX OFFICE EXPERT. So stop pretending to be. I don't care how old you are, or what country you're from. You have missed on basically every single prediction you've posted on these boards. And then when sh** comes out the opposite of what you predicted, you flip flop and start making adjustments to your predictions, and then start saying how you were "right AGAIN! ZOMG!".

You're a joke.
