Okay, I don't like to rip on artists unless it's REALLY warranted (it's alot more fun to rip on writers anyway :) ), but I have to go on record as saying the art in the latest Sensational was some of the worst I've seen in a Spidey book since the dark days of Skroce. Hell, it might have been even worse. The penciling looks like it was done in an hour... rushed, scratchy, lines were left in that should have been erased... problems with proportions... Jordan looking like he was older than his mom... just ugly. I originally wasn't a big fan of Medina, but now he can't come back soon enough.

Incidentally I really liked the story, which makes it even more of a shame that this guy brought down the overall quality of it with those rushed pencils. I can't read through it without cringing at some of the work.

Aloha,
Actually the art for me wasn't THAT BAD. For me Ramos and Herrera were the Worst artists ever on Spider-Man. Although I collected Spectacular SPider-Man , I will confess that the issues with Ramos and Herrera are the only Spider-Man comics within my collection that I have NEVER READ. In the words of Simon "horrid".
Spidey rules

oh yeah, while I didnt like the art in this SSM, it was still light years better than Ramos, and especially Herrera, who is just a Ramos clone with even less talent

Hmmm interesting opinions...

Sensational#37- I did not mind the art though obviously as a fan of Medina I would have preferred him.
The pencils might have been a bit scratchy and not always that well proportioned, but I think the murky colours and aforementioned style of pencils melded together well enough to remind me of Charles Vess' SOTE.
No bad thing.

As for Ramos it's funny you should all hate him, he is 3rd favourite Spidey penciler ever.
He was just drawing a comic like it was graffiti art. I guess if you have no love for graffiti,
you will hate Ramos.

I prefer Medina. He gives the story a creepier feel, which suits this story a lot

Honestly, The artist isn't that bad, he's just not that good. We'v ehad Medina and Craine rotating out since the title began, and it just throws me for a loop everytime they throw in a random artist...especially after Medina started the arc! It's very jarring when yo go from freaky, surreal, yet enjoyable artwork, to having mediocre, sometimes barely professional artwork glaring at you. I imagine the trade of this one will probably simply sit on shelves if people just glance at the artwork.

As fro Ramos and Herrera, I'm by no means a fan of either of them. I desxpise the "graffitti" style, so I don't like their work. I appreciate that, at least Ramos, draws this way because this is the style he loves, but I just don't like it.

The art in the latest Sensational wasn't that awful.

However, the way Felicia was drawn in it...was.

I didn't dislike the art, though I was really disappointed that Medina didn't to the art. Since the very, very next issues feature Eddie Brock (and possibly Venom) I was really looking foward to Medina's style (since his style is very reminicent of McFarlane's and McFarlane's Brock and Venom are my favorite). Does Medina not drawing #37 mean he may not be drawing 38 & 39?

I didn't think the art was that great either. I've seen worse, but definitely meh.

What caught my attention however was Crayne's art on the new variant cover of the Sensational #35 reprint...

Marvel's next big romance comic -- The Lizard Loves Mary Jane.

Erm reprint..

As in a second printing?
Is that coming out soon?

This would be most beneficial as I missed out on a mint copy of #35.

I think Lee Weeks is filling in for him in those issues. And personally, if Venom does show up, I'm glad. I'm not too fond of Medina's Venom:

Yuck....that is the worst Venom I've seen sicne the Venom series. Seriously...that is awful.

Look at the thumb on his left hand! It almost looks like it's coming out of his upper forearm!

Man...and that jaw and tongue....

This makes me miss Larsen's Venom....at least it still had some semblance of human anatomy.

I didn't realise Skroce was hated,

I didn't mind him, I thought his style was a bit ugly, bit his action and story telling was good. BTW, the Venom above sucks azz.

That image is from the upcoming Angel Medina Venom mini.
An interesting take on the character tho I had hoped he would have produced a more McFarlane
based interpretation.

A Venom mini? Who's writing it?

No info yet. It's just annouched. The Venom is kinda ok. It is very monstrous, but maybe that's the tone of the story. Is that little spider Medina's signature or what? I've seen it everywhere :woot:

Well, that confirms Brock is indeed getting the alien back, yeah. Medina's Venom isn't too bad, like Eric Larsen's Venom and McFarlane's Violator (as crivelliman said) merged into one.

To stay a little on topic, though, let me say that I am a fan of Ramos' art, mainly because of his stuff from Crimson, and I loved his take on Wolverine, but his work on Spectacular Spider-Man did push it for me. Even I had to admit that his art then just didn't do it for me. But if he were to return to a Spider-Man book, I'd still read it.

Now, if you want art I never want to see in the interior of a comic, I don't like Clayton Crain's style (see Venom vs. Carnage and most of the Sensational Spider-Man covers). I mean, that kind of style is nice for one-shot comics, mini-series (once and a while) and of course covers, but I'm a sucker for the more traditional pencils done the old fashioned way.

What in God's great name is that?

that is the most hideous venom I've ever seen, and not in a good way.

What in god's name is wrong with his legs, they are split completely adn the right one is sticking out his back.

I always hate when artists draw hulk-sized venom, or venom with excessive flailing tendrils, they tend to distract me from the rest of the picture.

I always preferred the sleeker humanoid-like venom, leave the tendrils for carnage.

Where's this Venom picture everyone is talking about? Because you will NEVER convince me that this is Venom...

I haven't seen the new Sensational, who drew it? I do like Medina's work- That Venom is a bit much I'll agree, but I think he has a pretty dynamic style. Can anybody post pics of this new guy? I'm curious now.

Holy McJesus, is that supposed to be Venom? I admit I'm not familiar with Medina's art, but it had better be stupendous to make up for that atrocity. I quickly looked at the pic and thought that Venom was eating a pasty-faced child, until I realized the "pasty face" was his bottom jaw and what I mistook as a small body was the tongue. This vividly brings back my distate for the Violator...the goo/ ectoplasm/ necroplasm/ God-knows-what has got to go.

Some people complain about the recent look of Movie Venom and I've been known to gripe about Humberto's Venom, but that's the ugliest bastard child of Luzniak and Herrera's art I've seen in a long time. There's fan art out there better than that.
