Probably one or two semi-serious things (i.e. sodomy with a tent pole) with 222 others of "that mean DI called me a *insert insult here* and it hurt my feelings". Now we're gonna have a bunch of potential Marines that get pampered because their DI's are afraid to speak in a harsh tone for fear of silly a$$ complaints being lodged.![]()
To brainwash them?![]()

While you're being a bit ridiculous, you have a point. I don't want the quality of training to change drastically.
A blind eye is turned to a lot of **** during recruit training, but it's no where near as bad as it was in the 50s.
The overall demeanor of a Marine DI will never change, but the extent their power could get reduced, and that's idiotic. The whole point of boot camp is to learn discipline. That's inbued in you because of three people control every aspect of your life. If you restrict that, you could damage the quality of that future Marine.
It's called training. So you have the skills to do your job.
which includes some brainwashing . . . I work at a large bank, and I've worked at a lot of large corporate entities in the past . . . the whole initial orientation for EVERY place is exactly the same . . . they brainwash you to make you feel like you should, beyond a doubt, be completely emersed in your job, and the place you work at . . .
you work at a bank, they want you to believe it's the best bank in the world . . . until that bank gets acquired, then the new bank is the best in the world . . .
Not true. Plenty of people hate their jobs.![]()
The whole idea is to break you down; then they start to work on the clean slate and build it up into a fully functional Marine. It's the same process across the services...except for the AF...we got ice cream and wake up calls during Basic!
Cross Into the Blue!
Well, that certainly sounds a lot better than a tent pole or a flashlight shoved up your ass.

Definitely. Though we did sometimes get ice cream that was a little too melted...it was brutal.![]()
then what's the point of even hitting someone w/ it? It would pry break . . . I imagine that he pry had a bad-ass police flashlight . . . are they necessarily standard issue plastic across the board?
exactly . . . something must have happened that was more fuacked up than your run-of-the mill drill sargeant antics . . . and you never mentioned the tentpole thing . . . that's gotta hurt a bit more than a plastic flashlight . . . dude I think you're kinda brainwashed . . .

How...how did you survive?

Years of follow-up therapy; but I'm better now.
Dude, he's a drill instructor. The Army has drill sergeants.
Tent pole, getting your face slammed into a wall, getting choked out, **** happens. It's part of boot camp. You look back on it and laugh.
And why are you attacking me if I'm essentially agreeing with you? You have a vendetta against people who've done something for their country?
Brainwashed? That's an extreme terminology, but essentially it. You're instilled with some basic instincts and core reponses that you carry for the rest of your career.
It's an effective system.
I heard that in the US military, while going through basic (and hell, sometimes on the field), commanding officers weren't allowed to physically harm their subordinates at all. That means you could insult them, order them to die for their country, but not strike 'em.
well whatever he is . . . and I'm just saying that something really bad must've happened for this to be such a big deal, since abuse goes on everyday to a certain extent and you never hear about it
and please don't take that statement the wrong way; I agree with most of the measures taken to breed a marine . . . it's essential to achieve that level of discipline . . . and sadly, the level of brainwashing that occurs is essential too, so as to not go all "private pyle" on the DI . . .
I'm not attacking you man . . . and no, I don't have anything against people that have 'done something' for our country . . . even though that seems to be a fallback statement for many servicemen to put 'regular folks' on a guilt-trip . . . .
but I do have a problem w/ the government . . . because they fuackin brainwash people to further their own agendas . . . and they command people like you, who are proud to have 'done something' for our country . . .
but what exactly is it that you've done? and how has it really 'helped' our country? we don't seem to be too popular w/ the rest of the world right now . . .
yeah . . . it's effective for the military . . . and then what? It just bugs me that people will blindly defend some shyt they have no direct experience with . . . it's the same as organized religion . . . ok I'm done now.![]()
