Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

My love for the comics, especially Superman comics, started when I was 3 or 4.
(Sad story really, but thats not for here.)
I saw S:TM in the theater when I was 5, and I was hooked for life.

Yes it says unofficial site, but on the site if you Scroll down, you will see articles about production on Man Of Steel, I don't think the articles are lying, I have seen these articles before, and Singer has said that the sequel is being worked on. Someone said something about two Phils, I am Phil1 a different guy. :)

I do think you are a different Phil. He dislikes S.R. as much as you seem to like it.

My love for Superman is more recent. I used to watch the TAS when it was running and liked the movie as a kid (didn't love it). I used to think Superman uninteresting due to his extreme power level.

Then around 2002, I read the Death and Return of Superman trilogy. This rocked my Superman world. That story helped me understand what being Superman really meant. Then I revisited the film series and my love for S:TM has only grown with each viewing since (while I like the Lester Superman II less everytime I watch it).

Superman used to be one of my bottom 5 superheroes, now he is one of my top 5 favorites.

I noticed you post in the BO threads a lot (and of course the Hulk movie bet). What was they bet for on your end of the Hulk bet(I know the others would have to sport a Welling shirtless avy)?

I never used to follow that cause I didn't know how it worked. Then I started reading the threads and began to understand it.
I have to sport the same ava if I lose. My sister said it doesn't make any sense... because I'm a chick, but to put it nicely, I'm not a very big fan of Welling, so it will hurt for me to have to do that.

The movie has already made about 120mil so I'm going to lose but I'm holding on.

I suppose my Fav. could have ended up being anyone, but it's Superman because his was the first comic I picked up.
Then again, perhaps he would been my fav. regardless.

^^That whole Welling for Superman thing gets me all the time. The man is incredibly fine, but he cannot act. Jeeze though, I watch SV with a small on face because of him.

Ahhh, now I see. I liked TIH, so I want it to succeed as much as possible (though I still say we get no sequel to this movie anytime soon or ever, which I am sad about).

First comic I ever read was Captain America. However, the character I gravitated most to was Spider-Man since in elementary school and in my early years, I was an outcast, so I felt a connection to him.

SV Clark puts that Superdickery site's examples of Superman to shame (and I actually like the show).

I feel the same way. I use to love Superman II when I was younger but after watching it several times, the movie is so flawed. Ireally wish Donner had been allowed to continue the film. It would have been interesting to see where he would have taken it (and no I don't count the donner cut that was released a couple years back)

Thankfully Reeve was so great he made the weak movie enjoyable

My Supes like started with the Timm/Dini animated series too. I'm going to be honest the original movie isn't my cup of java, so I was waiting for an updated Superman movie that took some cues from it. Thats another reason why SR disappointed me. I've read a few comics, including The Death of Superman.

I'm going to thank Bryan Singer for a moment, he helped me realize just how much I liked Big Blue.

THANKYOU BRYAN SINGER.

It is flawed and very inconsistant with the first. And the worst part is the incomplete Superman II is a lot better, and shows me that had Donner been allowed to finish it, Superman II may have even surpassed it. The new Jor-El scenes in particular were just so awesome, and the one where he again sacrifices himself had me in fighting back tears. But what are these great scenes replaced by? His mother in one scene and the other Kryptonian Council members (whom were arresting Jor-El FOR MAKING THE CRYSTALS!!!)

However, Reeve's Superman and Zod made Lester's version still decent, but with glaring flaws.

Timm/Dini had great ideas for Superman. Loved their Krypton, and making Brainiac the Kryptonian computer I think was a great idea. Gave Brainiac's episodes such a personal edge.

SR makes me mad cause I feel it was a missed opportunity for so many reasons. There was greatness in the concept, and had Singer thought the concept out and turned his attention to other areas of the film it would have turned out better. Instead, we got what we got.

As the saying goes, it is what it is.

It took me a long time to realize it but the core concept of SR was interesting, I just wish that major plot points had been changed and a Supervillain added.

I agree. The Kryptonite Continent was not a sufficient threat. I also feel Superman's sacrifice moment would have been better had the public been split about Superman's return. The public loved him again far too easily.

Though many other plot points needed changing also.

This is what I thought we were getting when the film was in production. It would have been very interesting had they chose to go that way.

Still, I enjoyed SR very much!

Well in all honesty, I think Superman the franchise has not been treated very well at all since the beginning, its been one dissapointment after another.

We have only really had 3 full complete Superman Movies.

Superman The Movie,
Superman 3
Superman Returns

Superman 2 was hacked up and not the original director's true vision,
while Superman 4 to an extent was a cut down version, although you can say Superman 4 benefited from the lack of that hilarious nuclear man 1!!!

Superman Returns is in actual fact, only the 3rd superman movie to be allowed full control over by the director, in this case Bryan Singer had full control.

As for the next movie Man Of Steel, we have to see whether Bryan Singer will be given full control, or whether WB is going to be more strict.

I believe after seeing the Hulk's box office, WB is not going to reboot the franchise. They are simply going to demand more action, a super villian and a more exciting movie.

I still think somebody can pull this off, create a direct sequel to Superman Returns and address the issue of the kid, etc.

And yes, I think Superman Returns missed out on a great opportunity for Lex to have made Lexcorp while Superman was gone, and for the public to have hated Superman for leaving them for 5 years.

The way the public just accepts Superman straight away, didn't really work to be honest. There should have been more anger towards Superman's decision to leave them all!
Would have made the movie more dramatic and epic.

I've bought the entire series.

Agreed.

I watch SV with a small on face because of him.

:(, me too, :(.

What about Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace?

The public loved him again far too easily.

Abandons the entire PLANET for five years. And then, when he pops up again, he's welcomed by a thunderous round of applause. I'd have thrown Kryptonite eggs at him.

As have I. I've bought the entire Timmverse on DVD.

What about Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace?

Superman III is a terrible movie, but it is at some point funny. Reeve's evil Supes is amusing enough to make the movie watchable. Superman IV was made on the cheap, so I don't take the movie seriously. Plus, it is amusingly bad (I am very much a MST3K kind of guy andcan watch a bad movie just for a laugh).

I see both movies as 3/10 type movies.

:whatever: Whatever! I'm not going to go here. I've gone over this ground too many times. You like the movie. Leave it at that.

Of course I like the movie, but I'm not going to make up lies on he isn't a deadbeat dad. Don't make up lies because you hate the film. Let me print out a real meaning of it from Wikipedia here. You'll see that nowhere sound like Superman in SR. Don't deny the truth.

"Deadbeat parent is a pejorative term referring to parents of either gender that have freely chosen not to be a financially supportive parent in their children's lives. Primarily used in the US, the gender-specific Deadbeat dad and Deadbeat mom are commonly used by the child support agency to refer to men and women who have fathered or mothered a child but fail to pay child support ordered by a family law court or statutory agency such as the Child Support Agency. The real definition is an unrestricted parent treated equally who chooses not to be a regular or supportive parent in their child or children's lives."

Now please tell me how this sound like Superman in SR when he didn't know he has a child at the end? When you been away for 5 yrs. while your girl is, say 1 month preggy, & didn't know the child exist, it doesn't make you a deadbeat dad. Not unless you later found out & you decide to be there for the child. That is no way a deadbeat dad.

I do like BR, but soul vision and Superman beign a vegetarian is ridiculous and stupid.

LMAO!! You know even vegertarian can get fat too. Tobey Maguire is a vegetarian & he got fat like twice when he was finish with both Spider-Man 1 & 2. Here one of him. You know what you're talking about on vegetarian?

tobey-maguire-fat.jpg

Loeb?
the guy who works his magic on smallville every few weeks...that loeb?

Actually, I was refering to Jeph Loeb. That guy can write & is good with Superman. ;)

It's so hard to stay off it, isn't it? I just can't believe that others can't see the 'deadbeat' quality of Singer's Superman. But you're right- gotta stay out of it. :)

Can't see the "deadbeat" quality in SR? Maybe it because there is none? I like to some good proof it is, 'cause I just put up a section about it above. None is what we see in SR.

Ohhhh... now I'm hurt. Read here, you imbecilic fool, look at your sig. That is ******ed and pathetic.

LOL!! This cracked me up. "HIt me Prime, HIT ME!!!" Hahaha. I love it when you get hateful. It's so extreme.

Well, at least you apologized. :hehe:

Not sure if this has been posted but now all of a sudden Millar is backtracking his earlier statements even though he made it seemed like a sure thing.:o

Groan.

The net is an endless source of non-news. This was the reporting of an informal chat in a Scottish newspaper where an American director asked me to join his team. He's pitching for Superman and this is in no way authorized by WB. Don't get too excited, folks. As I said in my first comment about this, this sort of thing happens every day and could amount to nothing. Bryan Singer still has dibs on Supes and this actioneer is only preparing his offer if and when Singer isn't doing it.

He says it's 'non news' yet he's the one who started it in the first place.

Yeah, it has been posted before, but a reminder is always good :oldrazz: Thanks Retro.

Very much so.:o

Still though i've been wondering about the well known action director ( supposedly with a huge pull at WB) Millar is referring to. Here's a few names that come to mind.....

Francis Lawrence who made Constantine and I Am Legend.

Zack Snyder has been brought up many times and rightly so. He's a comic book fan and has a huge pull at the studio.

James McTeigue and the Wachowskis brothers are mainstays at WB and big Superman fans themselves. Just look at the Matrix films.

Outsiders....Edward Zwick and M Night Shyamalan who is a big fan of Supes himself.
That said, Shyamalan still won't call ''Unbreakable'' a comic book movie. ''It's more a movie about the milieu of comic books than it is a comic book movie,'' he says. But that doesn't mean he has anything against the genre: He's a die hard fan of ''Superman'' and ''Batman.'' ''Of course, they were easier to relate to when I was a kid, and harder to relate to now that I'm an adult,'' he explains. ''Or at least pretending that I'm an adult.''
