Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

As we have learned recently that Siegel's father was killed. That is reflected in Superman's origin story.

And Superman should be a real man, not a "boy in a man's body" like Batman. :hehe: He can make his own decisions. And a movie is just about 2 hours, so we don't need these extra characters. Their only purpose is to die. Lex, Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Cat (that's the only post-crisis character I wanna see :hehe: )... are already enough. And not this Hamilton guy please. He should be in SUperman's brain, you know.

The Kents' purpose is to instill him with values and morals. But once that's done, there's really nothing for them left to do. Unless you just want them to be around so you'll know that they're alive.

Exactly. And it's a good starting point for Superman.

"Millar: This is also one of the reasons Superman shouldn't be married to Lois. It's just stupid. It makes no sense and destroys the whole dynamic. Superman is God, Jor-El is the Holy Spirit and Clark Kent is Jesus. The Kents are Mary and Joseph and Lois is Mary Magdelene. She's the NYC girl who's ****ed her way around the city and found nobody who measures up. She's just had it with men and is focusing on her career... then Superman shows up.
(...)
Interviewer: He must Love Lois? No?
Millar: Drop your child among monkeys when he's weeks old and see what happens. He'll get monkey characteristics, but he won't want to shag one of them. Even though he's never met another person he'll feel different... and monkeys are closer to us than we are to Superman. Think about THAT, baby.
Did tarzan want to **** Cheetah? No, he waited for Jane. He knew he wasn't a monkey; he just liked hanging out with them."

And some people want this guy anywhere near a Superman film??? WTF??!

For the people asking why some dont want Millar on a Superman movie, I give you the best possible answer above. KEEP THIS GUY AWAY from any Superman movie.

why?

it's a valid and deep take on Superman. More valid than Byrne's and the farmboy yuppie.

Minus the confusing Tarzan banging Cheetah analogy, I don't see what's wrong with what he said.

Since we're regurgitating quotes and posts, I'll give you mine...

Well here are my reasons...

I too don't think the Kents--at least Pa Kent--need to be around once he becomes an adult because it make him weak to go home for advice.

His view that Superman became Earth's protector to inspire people to live up to their potential, I agree with that. I agree with his view that Lois Lane is someone who's given up on dating and believing there being a good man until Superman appears.

His view that Clark Kent allows Superman to walk among humanity and have a life outside of saving the world.

I don't mind the religious metaphors, as they're one of the reasons I love the character, and they're unavoidable. I don't think Millar would be as heavy handed as most people believe and as most people in the past have been.

The last reason is because I've read one of his Superman works and absolutely loved it. Superman Red Son has one of the best interpretations of Lex Luthor yet. I truly believe he understands the characters and would create something special.

Oh you don't like John Byrne..?

I love his Lex Luthor update. It lead to others coming along and expanding on it with richer ideas, pre-crisis elements, making him the Lex Luthor he is today.

I already knew the Lex Luthor update before "Man of Steel" hit the stands. he was called the "Kingpin" back then.

I always find (in these boards) that most people don't like what I like: Grant Morrison, John Byrne.. what's next? Peter David? The horror, the horror.. :hehe:

Grant Morrison's awesome.

I love Grant Morrison's Batman. Now that you guys have mentioned his name, I think I'll pick up Arkham Asylum today.

Bravo. I've been saying this so many times but it falls on deaf ears. I'm only disheartened that the only person whose views share mines is exactly like me....because I ALSO happen to be a 20 year old Male in NYC. :funny:

Are we the only type that understand this concept? Is it that alien?

I guess it just means there aren't too many big city living 20 something year old single peeps here at the hype :woot:

Minus the confusing Tarzan banging Cheetah analogy

I could see how it could be confusing since Millar is an instinctive speaker in other words he doesn't think before he speaks. So he doesn't find the most articulate ways of putting things. Basically what he said was is that Supes may have adapted human characteristics because he's been around the species his whole life but ultimately he's still different. Because he's different he has no desire to ever be intimate with anybody else but one of his own. When he said monkeys are closer to us than Superman he meant biologically which is true.

Now I don't fully agree either because Superman does end up being intrigued by Lois to the point of getting intimate with here but I get where he comes from. He feels that though Supes cares for Lois that love doesn't go as far as wanting to be intimate with her which I don't find exactly correct. Because Superman is intrigued by the idea of being in a relationship with her and how that could get him close to achieveing what will still be a false sense of normalcy because he's got powers.

Maggin's famous words of "Superman loves Clark" come to mind. Superman knows he's different no matter how hard he were to try he'd never be human. Clark represents what Superman really wishes he was, which is the Kents who to him represent the best in humanity that's why he "loves Clark" because he loved and admired them. He really likes the idea of fitting in even though ultimately he never could. No matter how hard he pretends to be a good natured member of earth's dominant species like his foster parents were in the end he could hear an ant's footsteps and peer inside people's bodies so he could never be human. No matter how much he longs for "normality" he could never achieve being normal which is why he's a loner.

He could never sit back and wait for a kryptionian woman to come around cause he's lonely and his attraction to Lois as Clark comes from that loneliness. That and well he's the last son of krypton and though he later finds out that he's not the last kryptonian left it takes a while for the mythos to even get there.

Do you think the analogy, "Clark loves Lois" means Superman is trying to love a normal woman as a normal man, since Clark Kent is Superman acting normal and human?

Yep but ultimately he can't for two reasons

1) He could try to pretend all he wants but he's just not human. So he could never love her as a human cause no matter how hard he tries he wouldn't know how to.

2) Lois is attracted to Superman because regular guys just don't appeal to her.

This is why he could only be with her when she knows he's Superman and Clark is his disguise.

BTW: Superman TTA is back http://www.superman.nu/

Yay :hehe:

Based on what he's said about his take on Superman, to me, Millar's ideas are incredibly thin. There's not much depth to his idea of Superman, just basic "ideas" that he thinks make sense in the concept of an alien and a human, or what have you. They don't, however, fit all that well into the context of the characters and the world, from what I've seen. That's not to say he doesn't have a great Superman movie in him, I just don't see any hints of it in his actual statements.

As far as the Kents being alive...more characters interacting with Superman equals more interesting characterization and storytelling all around. What can anyone give anyone advice for, Superman or not? Isn't the nature of their son being Superman and their role in that reason enough to have them around? To show them struggling through something like that, doing their best to show him via human means how to be a supergod, watching him grow into a man and beyond? I think that's pretty interesting, myself.
