Mark Millar's Many Thoughts On Superman

haha "I have an idea for a Grand Space Opera trilogy! In the third act, a guy called Darth Vader kills his own Master to save his son, Luke!" Yeah, that would have gone down well! Although knowing the ending didn't seem to hold back Titanic or the Lord of the Rings films.
this is completely different.
they made titanic and it really happened.
they made LOTR after the book was realesed.

but this is something custom made for a movie. how is that even the same?

The ending.

That's not particulary interesting. It just "is".

I knew when I posted the link he didn't say anything more about plot details. But from reading what he wrote you can kind of see where he intended to take the story, specially the whole Krypton sequence.

What, that he says he wants to use Krypton and prophecies? Unless he's going to rip off TAS, I fail to see how him listing some character names tells us where he wants to take the story. Him going "I want to show the past, life and future of Superman tells me pretty much nothing concrete or interesting.

Case in point: This past Monday, Grant Morrison revealed that he's in talks with WB and DC regarding The Flash...

"Yes, I have talked to them. I’m deeply involved in those discussions. I know what’s going down with all of that, and it’s actually really exciting. But beyond that, I can’t say anything. I wish I could tell you. I’m sure announcements will probably be made at some point, but I can’t say anything.”

Interestingly enough, the article has now been yanked. Frankly, the only way I was able to pull the above quote was our buddy Jett from Batman-On-Film (thankfully) reported on it!

This is GREAT news! Morrison working on the Flash film huh?

Nice!

I don't get it. They pass on him for Superman, but will gladly take him up for Flash?

Man I thought there was something fishy because I saw it and it wasn't linking, I brought it up in the flash thread and nobody seemed to pay attention. Maybe they think they can get flash done before superman.

Thats because Wb didnt know what they want from Superman franchise yet. They dont know if reboot it, if make a sequel or whatever.

If Warner is confused now, imagine when Morrison talked to them about Superman movie, about a year ago! lol

My main issue with Miller's idea other than Superman committing suicide at the end is the scope of it in 3 films. There is no way superman's life will fit in 3 movies. Lets map it out.

Before he even becomes Superman we have to redo the destruction of Krypton. I think it could be done so much better these days but is pretty unnecessary for a regular superman story. If they want a life story though its best to start here. They need to introduce his parents and his life in Smallville, Lana Lang and Pete Ross. No doubt the entire Superboy/Legion part of his life will be removed. He graduated University and heads for metropolis where he works hard and gradually moves up the ladder to the reporter we know. If we want to do 'superman's life story' you could do the first movie on superboy alone but Miller won't. The best villain for an origin story is Brainiac as he works on a cosmic level.

More likely that would be done in an hour and a half in the rush to get to Lois, the Planet and that whole area where a regular Superman movie would begin. Now we get into the main part of the trilogy the villain no doubt would be Lex Luthor. The whole other part of his life, the justice league/DCU part would most likely be completely removed. Get the feeling the 'superman life story' is missing a HUGE chunk by now? I do. Then we get to Supergirl and Clark realising he is not alone. This could probably be worked into the movie and Lex's involvement in a Superman/Batman:Public Enemies type way.

Now what? We have to get from Clark in his peak to the end of earth. Thats a while. No doubt it would be a different take on the myth. No Lois. No Smallville. No Daily Planet. A true opportunity to do a cosmic story but not exactly a life story. We would need vast backstory about what happened between the two movies none of which would go into detail. Perhaps this could work if they have a villain that chases him and eludes him through time.

Miller's canvas is way too large and even if he could tell superman's life effectively given the time span there is no doubt key moments would be missed.

Good for Flash if it happens, but I'd really prefer if he wrote for Superman.

Anyone think that Danny Boyle may be considered to direct the next Supes flick? WB's were considering him for the JL film that Miller was going to direct.

^He would indeed, Sunshine is a great sci-fi movie, so I wouldnt mind him doing a Superman movie at all.

is he a to big name for superman?could WB control him?
it could happen that with him we would again get not enough action.

I think Danny Boyle would fit in to the mold of somebody WB would be looking for at this point.

1) Seasoned director but not a big name.
2) Some notoriety for his films, known for "independent" projects".
3) WB had considered him previously for Justice League.

I could see it happening with this guy or somebody like him.

^Correct me if I'm wrong Showy, but wasn't that David Slade? Or did they consider them both?

David Slade was flat-out hired for Justice League and had offices set up for about...3 weeks before he was given the boot in favor of George Miller.

from what you are saying, your taking out the worst parts about superman...sounds good to me. No Superboy ****. No Justice League. No Batman/Superman stuff.

superboy is just lame to me... Justice league is cool on cartoons, but i dont know how much id like seeing a bunch of grown men in tights with a bunch of cliche lines.....and batman/superman meh...worlds finest could be cool, but i doubt it.

So no Boyle?

Alot of names were brought up as potential candidates to direct Justice League. Boyle was one of em - along with the likes of Gore Verbinski and so on.

David Slade was given the gig and started preliminary work on the film with production offices set up in Canada, I believe. He was let go after about 3 weeks into the job because George Miller had overall more experience with those kinds of effects-heavy productions and had more sway/support from the studio branch.

Also Miller basically told WB if they let him make it exclusively in Sydney, Australia he would be able to get the production tons of tax-breaks and what not - saving WB millions of dollars. But alas we know how that worked out...

Yeah, that went well for them...Anyways, thanks, that was very informative.

I never heard Boyle's name mentioned anywhere, I was going off what somebody had posted above.

In regards to Miller and playing off what Jamie said, once Miller's Justice League didn't pan out in Australia...that was pretty much it for him. As I said months and months ago, Miller's shot involved him getting that tax break.

WB's should just look to go with Danny Boyle or JJ Abrams to direct the next Supes film.

They are talented up and comers who they can mold into "studio" directors and have a good working relationship with. It just depends if they are interested and what kind of vision they have from whatever story gets written of course.

Until I see what he does with this StarTrek movie I wouldn't be happy if Abrams got the gig as I wasn't overly impressed with anything in MI3. That being said, it's highly doubtful he'd get it anyway after the controversy surrounding that old script of his.
