A character from the small screen that SHOULD be adapted for the big screen.

A Columbo movie, in the traditional style of its storytelling with showing who the murderer is instantly and just how Columbo finds the smallest of clues & strings them together to capture them is something I think Hollywood should go for!
It would be a great alternative from all the big budget special effects movie and give us something we are lacking.
A character outside a fantasy realm you root for with an emphasis on plot.

And I think Mark is the perfect choice for the lead in hoping it could be a film series.

Our new choice to pass the torch to and uphold the character

I love Columbo and it's hard to think of anyone other than Falk in the role - but that is an inspired piece of fan-casting!

It s important to note that there is no active Columbo film in development

I would like to make it clear if the opening thread is vague.....there is no Columbo movie in development as Mysteryman points out.
But this was just a thread hoping we could drum up support for one in addition to having it star a favorite actor of us all.

I'm all for a Columbo movie, but my pick would be Oscar Isaac.

Ever since I saw Zodiac I've thought Ruffalo would make a great Columbo.

I hate procedural cop shows, but I always loved Columbo and his "...oh, just one more thing...." expository endings.

I would definitely go see Ruffalo as Columbo !

Nice nod to his quirks. I loved that about him also. It was like he was telling the murderer ," You know this one more thing is puzzling me but when I figure it out, I know I'll have you"

As a huge Columbo fan it's so hard to envision anyone but Falk in the role. But Ruffalo is an inspired casting choice.

My pick for Columbo has always been Ron Livingston : /

Well Columbo is suppose to be Italian-American. Jeffrey Wright is African American. That would be changing the whole character and wouldnt be Columbo. But since watching Westworld , Jeffrey has shown me he is an incredible actor and could somehow be part of a Columbo movie as another character.

I would think 1 director's name that should be tossed into the ring for this is Antoine Fuqua

Personally, I just think that Ruffalo would get those little quirks and ticks that Columbo had down pat - and the speech pattern. I can even see Ruffalo doing that little shuffling walk that Columbo had.

Jeffrey Wright is a very good actor but I think Ruffalo would be the better choice, he has the look (no make up required) and I feel all those special little Columbo quirks would look so natural on him.

I don't recall him being Italian as some kind of absolute defining trait in the least. In fact with that last name you could make the character a Black Hispanic man and move on without a hitch. As long as the character dresses sloppily, gives off of vibe of being less intelligent than he actually is and always says "Just one more thing..." it's not really all that important that he be of full Italian descent. I mean... If you cast a black actor why couldn't the backstory be his father is Italian American and his mother is black?

Funnily enough, I was re-watching Zodiac last night. Yeah, Ruffalo would fit the role like a glove.

Always loved Columbo as it was pretty revolutionary - in that it was a whodunit that bucked convention and showing the audience who did it at the beginning - meaning that it was a whodunit for Columbo himself where the audience was able to go along with the ride, which was the fun part. Writing, directing, acting, editing all top notch. Strangely enough, never cared for the 90's ones though - didnt seem to have the same feel as the originals and definately lacked the originals retro charm.

Well that would be changing the character all together. That kind of doesn't make him Columbo wouldn't you say? If you go by what you just said you could cast a black or hispanic man as the next James Bond as long as 1 of his parents were white. How do you think most would react to that? Im not against what you are saying, if you search the threads, I had a post supporting an ethnic Bond. However...No one seemed to go for it. So instead of making this a debate on race, I prefer to keep original characters as they were created. I have no problem with Jeffrey as a detective whose backstory would be his father is Italian American and his mother is black. Just make an original character for it. Not Columbo. You are neither wrong or right. You just have an opinion like I have mine. Peace.

Not wanting to get embroiled in the whole race thing so neatly side-stepping it with the question of whether this would be set in the 70's or be contemporary? As I mentioned above, I feel that part of the originals charm is the whole retro feel of it and that's what I'd like to see them go for.

I think the look of the character is as important as the traits, when you have iconic character like Columbo. Mark Ruffalo looks the part much more then some black actor. Curly haired Columbo just wouldn't do it. Just like a blonde white guy wouldn't be Shaft.
