This thread is for anyone who would like to talk openly about any and all of Marvel's adventures in cinema. Lately myself and others have been debating several topics related to the current MCU projects in the Avengers thread, but many who frequent that thread have made it clear that they want to keep it open for discussion about the Avengers.

So out of respect to their wishes, I'd love it if any and all comments related to Marvel movies could be directed here. I know we've probably had threads like this in the past, but I figure a fresh new one will help get the conversations rolling.

I love Marvel and I love that we're getting a great bunch of films from that universe, many of the best IMO are right around the corner. I love talking about them even more, so let's do it.

And please...... keep it civil...... if you can...... unlike Tony here.

So just to start things off, here's the new trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Introduced by its creators.

Personally, not the biggest GR fan in the world, but I'd like to see a better depiction than the last movie. My main gripe, in all honesty, is Nic Cage. I'm just tired of the guy.

I do like the look of GR in this trailer as opposed to the last movie. It has a nice "fire and brimstone" look to it. It's still hard to tell from the trailer as to what kind of direction the movie is taking. Will it be more action oriented, horror or just straight ridiculous violence? I'm hoping it's not the latter as that didn't really work very well for the Punisher and Marvel Knights hasn't really had a win ever. Hoping this film can sell me.

Ghost Rider's not a part of the MCU.

See below.

I agree that the new look of GR is better than the first one. I still think these films need to die and go back to Marvel so a good one can get made.

Hated the first Ghost Rider, but this one doesn't look too bad

So yeah. Like it says at the top of the thread, "ALL of Marvel's movies, not just those in the MCU.

I say let them have their fun. I don't think all Marvel franchises necessarily have to be run by Marvel Studios in order to be good. And GR, IMO, has always been more of a stand alone character in the first place. I've heard some pretty crazy stories about this film already, on the production side anyway, but the only think that turns me off from it would be Nic Cage.

I try to remain hopeful, but the trailer is not helping.

  • Ghost Rider in daylight? That's not really Ghost Rider.
  • Blackout in daylight? Fail. Blackout is a creature of the night and sunlight was harmful to him.
  • Urination joke? Epic fail. Ghost Rider was not a comedy, and the first movie adaptation missed this point with catastrophic results.

Marvel Studios has inspired confidence that they at worst know how to make a compotent superhero movies (TIH) and at best know how to make a series of films that really have defined the genre in the last 3-4 years (Iron Man, Thor, Cap) They know what they are doing and I can't blame anyone for wanting their favorite hero to revert to Marvel

They are sucking at it though. Marvel doesn't. Its really that simple to me.

I agree that Ghost Rider works best as a stand alone. I'm not saying he should be in the Movie-verse, but I would like to see a kick*** movie with him in it at some point. I don't think we will get that where he's at now.

I was at Comic Con,
Before they showed the GRII .footage .
They showed some clips of the directors filming stunts .
It was all very dynamic and fast flowing.
I enjoyed it more than the preview footage.
I didnt like the first one, but ,I am willing to give this film a chance.

  • I'm ok with it though. If he's out during the day it means he's not stopping for anything and it makes him more threatening. I like that.

Well, I guess they're changing that.
[*]Urination joke? Epic fail. Ghost Rider was not a comedy, and the first movie adaptation missed this point with catastrophic results.
Agreed. Again, it makes me wonder what direction they even want to take with this movie. Peeing fire doesn't exactly inspire hope in me.

I wouldn't say everything they've done has been a grand slam though. More good than bad, but other studios can do just as good a job. Spider-Man can stand alone just fine and I think the X-Men can too. First Class proved that to me. I do wish mutants were a part of the MCU though. I would love it if the Fantastic 4 made it over to Marvel. Fox isn't helping anything there and Reed Richards belongs to the MCU. The cosmic cube feels less cosmic-y without him.

Pretty much what I just stated above. I'll give it a shot, but GR is a tough sale to anyone IMO. Especially casual movie goers.

Well, I really enjoyed the first two X-Men movies and they were from Fox.
And I also liked the first two Spider-Man Movies from Columbia/Sony.

I enjoyed First class and spiderman 2 more than all the MCU films put together so I guess the other studios are doing something right

The Spider-Man movies(excluding 3) have been better than the MCU films so far, imo. I prefer him staying over at Sony, I would hate to risk Spidey's movies losing the character development and intense action they've had so far. I think most of the MCU movies are okay but not great. They always seem lacking after I'm done watching them and I leave the theater feeling disappointed. Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk were great, but it seems like they dropped in quality starting with IM2 and started feeling rushed and kind of cheap. The characters over at Marvel Studios have so much potential, and their movies should/could have been a lot better than they are.

I'm not excited to go back and watch Thor, Captain America, or Iron Man 2 like I was with Spider-Man 1-2, X-Men 1-2, and even The Punisher(Not Warzone). It's really because of MCU's previous movies that I'm worried about the Avengers next year; Will it have a great story without feeling rushed? Is the character development going to feel organic? What about the level of action, will it be epic? Are the special effects and sets going to look real and not kind of cheap? I'm more excited for the Amazing Spider-Man because I've seen what Sony's done with the character(excluding 3!) before so it should be something good. I really hope that Marvel Studios' movie quality improves now that Disney owns them. This is all only one man's opinion, of course.

The Raimi Spider-Man trilogy and I have never really gotten along in the past, but I'll always credit the man for bringing CBM's into the spotlight and doing interesting things with the camera. Spidey 1 doesn't stand the test of time IMO. It entertained when I was younger and seeing it for the first time, but now it has little to no effect. SM2, the one that remains so critically acclaimed, did do a lot of good things, but I'm still upset with how certain things were handled story-wise. I've always said that Doc Ock made a better Venom than Venom did in SM3. The thing that I always go back to with SM2 is the beautiful action scenes. The train fight was one of the best superhero action scenes I think I've ever seen. I was never certain how Octavius could withstand such a severe beating half the time, but hey, it is what it is. But it still didn't really nail the Peter Parker I had hoped to see on screen.

The Amazing Spider-Man has my complete attention however. I feel like we need to explore Peter's high school years thoroughly before we throw him in college and living in the city. They are his most formative years as a superhero and I can't believe that Raimi and co. just decided to skip over it like they did. From everything I've seen, it's definitely hitting all the right notes. After SM3, I was ready for Marvel Studios to take the character back, but now that I've seen what we're getting with ASM, I'm ok with Sony keeping him. Spider-Man can just do fine on his own without interference from the big world of Marvel.

Well said. I'll take Spider-Man at Sony then Marvel Studios anyday. His world is so rich on its own that it shouldn't be diluted in order to fit into the bigger Marvel universe as a whole. That's OK for comics, but in a two hour+ film, not so much. And I love the Marc Webb hire by Sony. I can't see Marvel Studios making a move like that. Not at this stage of their existence anyway. They probably would have gone for the more conventional/safer choice, or someone with more "genre specific" experience. Or even a retread. The fact that Sony went for a guy who's first and only film is, at it's core, a small character driven piece about a relationship, has me truly excited for the direction they seem to be taking this franchise.

And then there is the casting. I think Andrew Garfield is this generations Ed Norton. He is really skilled and has alot of range. He can bring a real subtext and nuance to his performance, which I can't wait to see in the quieter/character moments of this film. This is where I feel it will shine the most. The whole cast is pretty much a winner for me. Emma has great screen presence and looks alot like Romita's Gwen. Rhys and Irrfan are two of the ultimate scene stealers working today, watch any scene they're in and they absolutely OWN it. Then you have greats like Sheen and Field as Ben and May. Expect some powerfully emotional moments in this film. I don't know about you, but the scenes I am looking forward to the most in this are the Uncle Ben/Peter scenes. The Peter/Conners, Peter/Gwen scenes are obvious choices, but I just can't wait to see Garfield and Sheen riff off each other.

so how about the infinity gauntlet, what about silver surfer and adam warlock? will dr. strange take their place and do all the work? fox still owns the silver surfer and galactus and who knows which other cosmic beings fall into that category. not sure if warlock was part of the FF deal, he did appear there first. so would you replace them with dr strange and captain marvel?

Ben and May definitely look like people I'll relate to a lot more than the geriatrics they chose for the Raimi trilogy. Martin Sheen alone is enough to sell me on that idea.

The only film I know of that Garfield has done is Social Network and I haven't even seen that. Does anyone know a good film of his that would be good to familiarize myself with how he acts? I'll watch Social Network if I have to, I've just always tried to avoid that film.

If it came down to it, then yeah. I don't see any other way around it. That's why I feel it's such a crime that Fox won't give up rights to FF. I brought it up a bunch, but I'm pretty sure everyone can agree that the MCU feels a little empty without FF, more notably Reed Richards. I don't think they can be treated the same as X-Men and Spidey, in that they can't stand on their own two feet as well without the MCU. They contribute to almost every single effort in the Marvel universe. I honestly wonder if I can start some kind of petition to get FF over to the MCU.

Strange is great though. I hope he gets represented well. I can see Dormamu being a potential threat to bring up to the Avengers.

my main thing is i want the FF,silver surfer and galactus with marvel studios. i wanted to see the avengers and FF fight galactus. also i wanted to see more Silver Surfer. i was hoping he would get his solo film. i want to see the marvel cosmic universe. or see more former heralds who maybe show up and fight with the avengers briefly or just fight the silver surfer.

also the annihilation stuff or GOTG could always have a run in with galactus or a herald.

IMO, Marvel fans have been very lucky withe comic-to-film adaptations. We've been treated to two sucessful franchises.

Five X-Men movies; 3/5 which were commercially and critically successful; the other two were commercially successful.

Three, soon to be four, Spidey movies. 2/3 were critically and commercially successful, with Spidey 3 being the most commercially successful.

Iron Man has turned into a budding franchise. It seems Thor and Cap are headed in the same direction.

The Fantastic 4 films were generally entertaining. In my mind, Marvel's productions (including their co-productions) have only produced two major flops; Elektra and P: War Zone.

I've been completely satisfied with most of Marvel's films

I would go with Boy A (Garfield is simply fantastic in this) or Never Let Me Go. A good film which loses alot of steam midway through. Great performances in both though.

I seriously don't think the new Ghost Rider film good.

I have no hope with the directors of the film, they were in Gamer and Jonah Hex. Those films were not good.

This thread rocks, Bobby. Finally a place where the FOX, Sony, New Line Cinema, Universal & LGF franchises can be praised without being constantly reminded by others that Marvel Studios makes better movies. In my eyes, Marvel Studios has only made one great movie & that was [Jon Favreau's] Iron Man. I'd say they made two great films, but Feige butchered TIH in post. I've said it before, FOX holds the best track record for me with 3 brilliant films based on Marvel Comics. X-MEN started it all. It opened the door to serious comic book adaptations & showcased how its better to adapt the material than to just copy & paste it (a 6'3" Wolverine & an introduction to the X-World when its already been around 40+ years is evidence of that). X2 is arguably the greatest Marvel CBM to date & First Class really proved that quality was lacking in the 2011 MCU films.
