Marvel June 2010 Solicitations

I've been saying all along that if they're gonna stick to one token female, it should be She-Hulk. She's better than Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel put together with a whole second plate of awesome to spare. :o

Eh, I'd take Spider-Woman over She-Hulk. And Ms. Marvel just doesn't interest me in the slightest.

How I'd rank them.

1. She Hulk (Best Female Character Marvel has period.)
2. Ms. Marvel
3. Spider-Woman.

It's just Spider-Woman seems like she'd be more street level than Carol. Whose been an Avenger years before Bendis acted out his crush on Ms. Drew.

Elektra would've been fun on New Avengers, actually. I mean her rip-off Echo's already been one, so why not?

I've been saying for years that Marko Djurdjevic should be doing the covers for Captain America, and now he is. Hooray!:awesome:

General Previews, and all I got to say, Franken-Castle #18. Hell Yeah :awesome:

Thoughts:

- Yay for the NAMORA one shot. I know it's only there because Marvel is on their MARVEL WOMEN kick, but if URANIAN could get a 3 issue mini, why not Namora? Besides, it features artwork by female artists.

- ATLAS #2 looks cool. The last ongoing series of this franchise lasted 11 issues; hopefully a new title, a new member, and some additional time with mini's and back up strips will aid this second attempt at lasting longer. Looks like the ugly secrets from Grayson's URANIAN series will come to the fore as the new 3-D Man joins the team. I actually liked that Triathlon took on that mantle in AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE even if it was kind of a waste to publish a SKRULL KILL KREW mini after SECRET INVASION ended, as everyone by then was more than tired of Skrulls (SPIDER-WOMAN had the same problem). Gabe Hardman alongside Jeff Parker some more, looks like solid times.

- CAPTAIN AMERICA #607 gets on with the big Baron Zemo story and it does seem like Falcon will be a permanent part of the book, perhaps allowing Black Widow to take a break for her own books. It is interesting, because Falcon probably has way more experience in the modern era than James Barnes, which makes their double-team interesting. The NOMAD back up will continue even though YOUNG ALLIES should be out around then. Cover looks cool.

- A comic based on the Russkie team WINTER GUARD? What next, another relaunch attempt of ALPHA FLIGHT? It's been about 4-5 years since the last attempt, I think we're due for another exercise in futility.

- Iron Man has 5-6 comics out this month; can you tell "IRON MAN 2" will be in theaters? Perhaps not to be outdone, Cap will actually have 3 comics out this month, too. At any rate, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN chugs along and Fraction & Larroca continue with what they're doing. Hopefully Fraction learns not to decompress as much. The annual will be the first IIM issue of this launch not drawn by Larroca. I don't mind the Mandarin, as he is like the Dr. Doom or Magneto of Iron Man; the arch nemesis who always returns after a few years in every run, whether you want him to or not. May as well see what Fraction has to say on him.

- SHIELD is the sort of thing that drips with so much pretentiousness that it either will be exceptional or a horribly overrated misfire. I'm not sure whether I feel like biting.

- Hickman is onto better things with FF. Arcade and the Impossible Man? Cool. Even if it does seem obvious that Johnny always gets the "goofy" issues of FF. No one takes him seriously.

- Considering the sales, I am stunned VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT will see a 9th issue, but then again it's managed to outsell SWORD and DOCTOR VOODOO. I would not be stunned if editorial wants to see how Deadpool's appearance will boost sales for the book. The answer is that it might cause a spike for those issues of somewhere at 10% at best, and likely nowhere near that, and then the issues without him will continue to tumble. Guest stars have not worked to save a lagging title since...about 2005, when X-23 lost her luster. At any rate, Spider-Man is here and he hasn't saved sales for a book since 1994. When a series relies on guest stints every issue, it is on last legs. The lack of Opena artwork is also a shame. Frankly, I think Moon Knight would be better off giving a solo a rest to return to some team book, like SECRET AVENGERS.

- THE THANOS IMPERITIVE seems to be quite awesome sounding. The space heroes have to recruit Thanos against the "Cancerverse" on the other side of the Fault because he's the avatar of Death and they are from an undying universe. Sounds like Thanos may come off more layered than Zemo might be over in CA. At any rate, sounds awesome, and I am glad that "DnA" have realized it is time for their big space stars, like Nova and Star-Lord, to man the ship of this event after two years of side-lines. It's like the head coach of the Mavericks figures out his team does better when LaBron and O'Niel play. Who knew, right? :o

Looks like I went with a good time to get back into single issues.
-Matt Fraction on Thor
-Atlas ongoing
-Man thing on a superhero team
-Hell I'll even buy winter guard because of the bear.

... why the hell is Man-Thing a Thunderbolt? Not that I'm arguing him being in a comic because that's always a good thing, but I just don't see how that's going to work out. Dammit, let it be June already, I need to read that.

Holy crap, Danny Ketch's Ghost Rider volume 2 and a Jason Aaron Ghost Rider omnibus in September? I think I done soiled myself.

Just some random thoughts about the June solits:

1. I didn't know Deadpool MWAM is a 13 issue limited series. Bummer, I've been enjoying it, but I guess I'll end up saving money in the long run.

2. Those ASM Kraven covers are so F'ING SWEET.

3. Avengers #2 with Wonder Man standing in the way of the Avengers mission interests me. Not to sure about them going into the future to stop their kids from destroying the universe just because Kang says to. What is this? Back to the Future II? "It's not you Marty, it's your kids!"

4. As much as I love Ms. Marvel she doesn't seem to fit into what the New New Avengers are about.

5. It's pretty obvious now that the Secret Avengers aren't black-ops. They're out to protect Earth from threats unseen to common civilians. That could lead to some interesting things is someone tries to expose them in the papers.

- Diggin Herc's new costume

- That cover to iHulk #610....goosebumps

- I'll check out that Namora book for The Kraken. I had no idea she had any fans.

It wasn't. Marvel just probably decided that 4 Deadpool titles were too much and since Gishler was already writing Deadpool Corps and spins off from MWAM, MWAM is the most logical title to ax.

4 Deadpool books are too much according to Marvel??? That's a sure sign of the apocalypse.:o

That's the big mystery of the next roster of THUNDERBOLTS, besides the fact that Crossbones, a devoted Neo-Nazi Red Skull loyalist (partly responsible for assassinating Capt. America as well as lord knows how many SHIELD agents or prison guards), would be allowed there. Man-Thing is basically a mindless monster protecting a swamp. I imagine some plot contrivance may be it.

Or...I recall during CIVIL WAR (in one of their 1400 one shots) that some SHIELD agents went into the Florida Everglades to "arrest" Man-Thing and thought they successfully killed (and decapitated) him, not knowing he'd just be reborn in the swamp. Maybe someone took that "dead head" and managed to spawn another Man-Thing from it. I mean, you can use bits of plants to grow a whole new plant, right? It's a long shot, but if that is what Parker is going with, then it would make sense. The government has done far worse things trying to create "their" superhumans (including creating many villains). After all, Man-Thing was created trying to duplicate the super-soldier serum.

I'm glad that Jason Aaron GHOST RIDER Omnibus is coming out so quickly. His run really saved that volume of GR after Daniel Way's retcon threw it for a bit of a loop. I won't say it was flawless but it was a quite enjoyable ride. Any GHOST RIDER fan who didn't catch it monthly should give it a gander.

I am a huge GR fan, been so for 20 years, and I only bought the last 6 issues of GR out of habit. I thought his writing just piled more crap on top of the crap Way piled on first. Still, gonna get the omnibus since I never bought the trades.

Also, nice recall on the Man-Thing history.

****. I just noticed Merc With a Mouth is a 13 issue limited series myself. That's a shame as it's the only Deadpool ongoing that's actually good.

Hell yeah, I love the Gischler/Dazo team. The covers by Suydam are awesome too, the best out of any series on the shelf right now. (Except for maybe ASM)

Thanks. I actually doubt that is where Parker will get him from, but if he did, it would make sense. Even if trying to reference a throwaway tale from a one shot anthology from 3 years back is asking a bit much of a fan, but frankly I've seen far older, far more obscure stories referenced as if they should be second hand knowledge.

I'm not as big a GR fan as some but I did like the Aaron run overall. It had it's problems but I liked the wacky, B-Horror movie aspect he gave it. That and he made sure to dig up a lot of villains, even a forgotten monster from the 1960's, or a U.S. ONE villain like Highwayman.

Jason Aaron ruined Dan Ketch even more than the convoluted last few years of Ketch's tenure as the main Ghost Rider did. I dropped Aaron's run about halfway through.

I'm actually getting kind of interested in Thunderbolts now. The team is crazy enough to be fun, Ghost is still there, Jugs is there, and Parker gets to do what he wants instead of trying to follow up on Diggle's status quo. Could be fun.

Well, Dan Ketch did technically decide once upon a time to literally take over Hell. The idea that he'd be an easily manipulated dip**** who once worked for an evil angel isn't exactly far fetched. Still, if you have two bothers with the same powers, you do have to kind of make them obviously different acting. Y'know, like SUPERNATURAL.

I do agree that Jeff Parker on THUNDERBOLTS has gotten good. I only jumped on the book for him, but I'll be staying for him, too. With a new team coming, then it seems like the Mighty Avengers might actually get to beat this current squad. Although I do wonder what kind of baloney Ghost pulls to still be around, considering he just tried to kill Iron Man about five minutes ago. "Osborn made me do it," basically. And Crossbones still seems odder than Man-Thing to me. Nazi's are literally the only bad guys in comics or fiction who don't need a reason to be evil, they just are, and Brock is a remorseless Red Skull follower.
