Born Again Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again General Discussion Thread

18 episodes is overkill. Why are they making it so damn long
What makes a television series being 18 episodes inherently "too long"? Some of the most beloved and well regard television shows had 22+ episode seasons. The last season of Breaking Bad was 16 episodes. Was that "so damn long"?

I just hope that the show will be given a decent budget so that they can provide us with some great spectacles and action sequences.

What I love about the OG Netflix series is the mix of Miller and Bendis. The shows tone was very Bendis in that modern gritty crime story, film noir way so I very much like that they took the tone of those Bendis books and with Miller it was the storyline’s like the first season was Man Without Fear, second season The Hand arc and the third of course was Born Again. So I always loved that the series took two of my favorite runs and combined them to make a fantastic series.

Well Charlie confirmed this a reboot set in the MCU. And he'll be getting a new suit

Regarding the length of the season with 18 episodes, I don’t think the number of episodes matter as much to the quality of the show (just like I don’t think doing 6 episodes was a detriment either). It depends on how they structure the season. If they do two parts of 9 episodes each with a clear beginning, middle, and end in each part, that leaves less room for fillers which I think is what most people are worried about. I felt like for a lot of the Disney+ shows that had 6 episodes, their pacing was off. They took their time with set up but rushed the ending because they only had 1 episode left. At least a 9 episode part will give them more breathing room.

Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Confirms Born Again is a Reboot
I’ve currently started a rewatch of the Defender’s Saga on Disney+ and I love those shows despite their flaws with Daredevil being the bright spot but I think this is the right move. A fresh new start so Marvel Studios can really make Daredevil their own.
Wonder how that will work with recurring characters then. For eg Vincent D’Onofrio, will he know him or start from scratch? Will they use the same actors elsewhere?

I find it good that is not a direct continuation or a season four. The Netflix series was a quite complete story and with this being it's own thing if it is good we'll all cheer, and if it's bad it won't "Ruin" the previous one.

I dont think it being its own thing and not a Daredevil season 4 and keeping the original series cannon are mutually exclusive. At this point, we are at least 5-7 years post blip and who knows the time frame of show vs blip if it were cannon. So we would be looking at soft reboot either way.

I dont know. I didnt watch Breaking Bad. I know I thought the 13 episode seasons of Daredevil previously were too long so 18 seems like overkill

The original runs of Daredevil felt stretched out because they struggled with crafting multiple narratives to fill out the runtime. A quality season should have multiple storylines and some self-contained episodes.

I have to believe there's a specific reason they've chosen to do 18 episodes. I'm basing this on nothing at all but I have a feeling they're going to divide it into two big arc and I feel what they may do is air 9-10 episodes, then go on break and then air the remaining a few months later, kind of like what they did with Stranger Things.

I really hope they don’t screw this show up. The Netflix series set the bar extremely high

I hope they’ve employed a bunch of those who worked on the Netflix show if that’s possible.

That’s a good question but I’m assuming they’ll allude to Kingpin knowing Matt is Daredevil but ultimately he doesn’t. I would think that’s a story that Marvel Studios would want to cover themselves. Possibly in this new series.

I'm a little nervous about Charlie Cox calling this a reboot, but we'll see how it goes. My one hope is that this means they can do their own superior version of Bullseye and The Hand and won't be beholden to the underwhelming Netflix versions.

If we can get a superior take on Bullseye and more of Matt in costume, I can forgive this.

Once again, more proof that the Netflix shows were never connected to the MCU.

#ItsNotAllConnected

Daredevil never meant much to me, but the Netflix series was awesome regarding to action, stunt choreography and of course storytelling.
If the new series is a reboot and ignores that all than this series is not really special to me

I'm seeing a lot of rumors being reported on, but I don't know any of the sources. Does anyone know why we should trust these tweets?

If they brought Bernthal in then the material must be good, Bernthal's gone on record saying he aint gonna do no watered down Punisher.

Well he didnt say "reboot", just replied that the serie will be season 1 not season 4. But season 1 necessary means re-start ? NO. it could be season 1 following events from Netflix season 3.
Cox said it will be a new story. New story or untold story means reboot ? NO. Every sequel is a new story.

1/But actually if its indeed reboot, Fisk was not in jail before Hawkeye 2024, and
-Netflix series are parallels universes sort of, as Spiderman Freshman years they dont set in MCU 616. They are canon in MCU multiverse and set in another universe.
-either Disney simply ignores Netflix series events and they are non-canon in entire MCU
2/If its not reboot, Fisk managed to escape from prison between 2018-2023, Murdock gets his new costume from Jacobson instead of going back to Melvin Potter

Even Feige didnt say "reboot"

Ultimately what the show does will be the proof in the pudding. So I don't really trust any comments or things said in interviews until we see the final product.

Just like the creators of Netflix Resident Evil claimed their show was canon to the games when there is now way that is possible.

Pacing wise, Season 1 of Daredevil did 13 episodes the best. It was the other shows that struggled to fill up 13 episodes.

18 episodes does not have to be an issue. It's only an issue if the writers are not prepared to fill 18 episodes with a compelling storyline.

Even at 8 episodes, Defenders was weak and had the impact of a thud.

Season 3 of Daredevil delivered a half-baked, half-assed version of Bullseye.

I don't want Wilson Bethel back as Bullseye. He's on All Rise as one of the leads anyway. They cheaped out on giving us a proper Bullseye by giving us him in a stolen Daredevil costume. They can say that he has to earn the right to wear his costume or that he's just starting out or whatever BS reason, but we know it's really all for budgetary reasons that they stuck him in that.

With 18 episodes, I hope we do have some case of the week or villain of the week episodes. And they don't have to feel like filler. Series like Star Trek (especially the original series) had more than 24 episodes and they were all episodic and standalone but didn't feel like filler. Even many procedural shows now with 20 episodes don't feel simply like filler.

I am interested to see how DD comes across in She Hulk whenever he turns up. I did like his cameo in NWH and that seemed like the Netflix Matt to me.
