Marvel may own Manhattan in the comic book world, but when it comes to their movie arm, Manhattan Beach in sunny southern California is home sweet home. According to a press release sent out by the film company, Marvel Studios has signed a long-term lease that will all but guarantee that its next four films — “Iron Man 2,” “The First Avenger: Captain America,” “Thor,” and “The Avengers” — will be filmed at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, California. The move comes on the heels of an article posted back in July on Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, where “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau lobbied California governor Arnold “We’re not going to refer to him as ‘The Guvernator’” Schwarzenegger for Hollywood tax credits for filmmakers, assuring him that Marvel would commit big bucks and four feature films in exchange.
In addition to filming taking place at Raleigh Studios for the next batch of Marvel Studios films, the studio also plans to relocate its Beverly Hills-based executive and production offices to the site as well.
According to the press release, “Iron Man 2″ is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2010, “Thor” on July 16, 2010, “The First Avengers: Captain America” on May 6, 2011, and “The Avengers” on July 15, 2011.

Yeah let's film everything in our back yard and keep everyone happy because we don't care about scoping out the PROPER locations to film a movie and we just want to maximize revenue and make the lowest quality film possible. And before you people get on me... how the **** do you film Thor in California? Can someone explain that to me? I hope this report is complete B.S and that there will be additional locations besides California...

? The same way you film Thor anywhere else? They've got 22 acres and a bunch of sound stages. I'm sure they'll film their massive outside segments for Thor elsewhere. And it isn't BS, it was a press release.

You can't claim that it's about maximizing profits, as it is more expensive to film in California than almost anywhere else at the moment.

Here is the full press release

Los Angeles, CA (October 6, 2008) – As Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., powers up to begin production on its next highly anticipated slate of films, the studio has made an agreement with Raleigh Studios to film each of Marvel’s next four films at Raleigh’s facility in Manhattan Beach, CA. The four projects to be produced at the studio facility over the next three years include IRON MAN 2, THOR, THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE AVENGERS. Keeping these four major tent pole film productions in Southern California allows the studio access to outstanding crews and resources and makes Marvel the largest tenant on the Raleigh lot. Additionally, Marvel Studios will move its Beverly Hills-based executive and production offices to Raleigh’s facility in Manhattan Beach.

“In making this deal with Raleigh to produce our upcoming films at the Manhattan Beach Studios, we are most excited about keeping our film production here in California and taking advantage of the best crews in the Los Angeles area,” stated Louis D’Esposito, Marvel’s President of Physical Production. “All of our production partners on these upcoming films have been incredibly accommodating in terms of their creativity and financial structures, allowing us to remain in California. Raleigh Studios has long been known for the superior quality of its film production facilities and we know that Manhattan Beach will be the ideal location to produce our movies to the highest standards that our fans expect.”

“We are thrilled that we were able to find a way to make this deal work for Marvel,” said Michael Moore, Raleigh Studios President. “We could not have asked for a greater compliment than having a quality company like Marvel put their faith in us to provide a home for its film productions.”

The Marvel live action releases to be filmed at Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios are scheduled to arrive in theaters beginning in 2010 and going through 2011. Specifically the release dates are IRON MAN 2 on May 7, 2010; THOR on July 16, 2010; THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA on May 6, 2011; and THE AVENGERS on July 15, 2011.

Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios first opened for operations during 1998. This studio consists of 14 sound stages on 22 acres with an additional 300,000 square feet of office and support space. As a result of this venture, Raleigh Studios along with its sister company Hollywood Rentals, are now the largest operator of independent film studio facilities and production services in North America.

THOR can be filmed mostly in a studio....the streets of la/ca. can translate to n.y., chi town or any other city where Dr. Blake may be banished to. ALSO u can send a small crew to any location to grab exteriors, ice/snow, huge water locations etc. Calm down my friend...marvel knows what they are doing...

SO basically everything is done in front of the green screen eh? Movies like 300 did not impress me at all with the so called "epicness" or surreal landscapes or breath taking settings/backdrops. It's lazy film making IMO... Asgard needs an actual location like LOTR had.

No worries, SETS will be built, yes i am sure u will have to have some green screen.... but it cost a LOT LESS to have all YOUR talent/crew/actors/stunts etc. to simply be able to DRIVE from their house to a set. The alternative/another state would be to house hundreds of people in hotels for MONTHS, with a stipend, plane tickets etc....

This move alone keeping these movies in la saves them millions, with the tax break hopefully we can keep more marvel movies here after these four.

FaT_tONIe, your shtick of being outraged at every little announcement doesn't really apply to this thread. There is nothing in here that says they will exclusively shoot in Southern California, it's basically an announcement of where Marvel is filming its sound stage shots and setting up shop. It's like being upset that some of Indy 4's production took place on the Universal Lot.

I am sure that they can do location shoots somewhere else... CA has plenty of mountains, forests (big thick awe inspiring forests), open plains / scrublands... you name it.

They can grab CA locations (like Ironman did for the Afganistan shots... all filmed in CA).

Exactly. It didn't say every scene of every movie gonna be filmed on a soundstage in the studio. Something like Thor will of course use outdoor locations but stuff like interior sets can be built on a soundstage and filmed.

This is awesome!!!! Thanks for this!
Verrrrry cool!

Well at least the movies will get more of an older day feel to them. I miss the days of sets and props. The recent Indiana Jones was a great example of why we still need to use sets.

I would love to see my fav MOONKNIGHT make it to the big hollywood screen, I think moonknight would be real good for the big screen and just not sure who i would pick as the actors .......

KEEP ROCKIN

People are making movies in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!?!?!?

What'll they think of next? :o

Yup, they still went to Caesar's palace and out into the deserts for Iron Man.

Why is there anything bad about this? This is huge, great news. Believe it or not, movies are fake, and they are not all shot entirely on location. I didn't see anything that says they are shooting these movies all on green screen or in the style of 300.

Fat Tonie, you need to give it a rest.

^ ditto... Hell, the ony reason that this is an anouncement at all, is because Marvel does not have a lot yet. All movies are made on a lot, I don't see complaints about scenes in TDK being made in WB studio.

I was sort of hoping they'd film some of Captain America over in Europe like Saving Private Ryan, just to add some more authenticity to it.

i don't think you understand how most movies work....

I thought the whole selling point to Thor was a Lord of the Rings feel to it? I hope that they won't green screen the crap out of it now that it's being done in California.

The Studio/ Setwork is done in CA...that doesn't mean they won't go on location...

Besides, Asgard isn't a rough and tough viking village; it's a paradise. That would need to be green screened on some level.

^ Agreed... CA is a big state where they can get some impressive landscape for scenes... I am sure they will go elsewhere as well (other states or countries if they see the need and it is budget-wise).

They will need some soundstage scenes, with sets and some green screen... All the tools of the trade will be needed.

yeah this news doesn't really change anything, they just now have there very own studio lot now, rather then sharing one with paramount.
