Mask Of The Phantasm Appreciation Thread

This movie will turn 20 on Christmas day and yet WB/Timm and co. don't seem to be working on a special edition Dvd/Bluray to commemorate with it's anniversary. I still own the VHS version b/c of that reason .

Sad. Shall have to watch it on Christmas Eve. It's still easily my favourite Batman film. That haunting imagery of the Gotham World's Fair and the future it imagined, and the decaying ruins it was to become is an image that is so simple, but manages to evoke such cynicism and despondency.

Well said.

It's a great companion piece to the Burton movies I find. Thinking of it, you could have it as the Burtonverse's origin story. Naturally, it would have to be tweaked, but I don't think it would sacrifice the core essence.

Say, start with the flashbacks - Bruce's vow and then move onto the Phantasm killings where Batman shows up. Like the film, have Batman blamed for mob murders - ala Johnny Gobbs, but not completely cleared, leading into Batman89.

Pre-accident Napier still shown, but of course not yet transforming into The Joker.

The Dini verse is very different to the Burton verse in my eyes, so I never look at it with some connection.

I think the MOTP origin and plot would serve best as the origin for this new Affleck version.

Anyways, im disappointed that WB aren't planning a 20 year anniversary Blu-Ray release.

Those posters just got me pregnant...:up:

i wish i could be at that screening. it's going to be in austin in january!

MOTP seriously needs and deserves more recognition.

That poster is simply stunning, I always loved the design for the Phantasm costume it's so badass.

Those are amazing! Man I wish this was re-released again on the big screen like it did in 1993.

I just re watched it today one of my 2 fave bits are the emotional bit when Batman confronts Andrea and he says "Leave Andi, now, please" I love how his voice shifts from the Batman to the Bruce voice. The other bit is in the cave with Alfred at the end and when he says "Vengeance blackens the soul Bruce", not Master Bruce, just Bruce, great scenes.

I had my brother watch this about a month ago and he absolutely loved it. MOTF is my fourth favorite Batman films and is miles ahead of any other the live-action Batman films before the Nolan films.

I love the Bruce and Andrea dynamics and the first time Bruce becomes Batman. I get chill every time.

Is there any episode or tie-in comic that explain what happened after the film and how the Joker escaped from Andrea?

They really ruined it by bringing an old Andrea in for a cameo in Justice League Unlimited for some asinine plot to kill the McGuinness parents for the sake of making Terry the new Batman.

I believe the comic adaptation of this movie said Andrea let the Joker go because he was a different man than the one who killed her father. Something like he was too crazy so she pitied him.
