"We don't want to retread Shepard's story because it is the players story, so that is why we are going to set it after the original trilogy, where the universe could be in four different states depending on the player choice at the end." I am sure that will create no complications whatsoever or conflict with some fan's headcanon.

I actually think not using Shepard makes sense but I also think it would have been better then set before rather than after.

Unfortunately par for the course with these shows. It's why Fallout S2 being in New Vegas is so nonsensical to me. Because trying to write New Vegas after The Courier's stay there and somehow still have the NCR and Caesar's Legion in it completely undermines the events of FNV. There is literally no version of the Courier's story as far as I recall (whether they're independent, side with the NCR, House or Caesar's Legion) where all of the factions still exist. And yet, here we are, with the equal stupidity of somehow trying to write immediate future after ME3.

Me personally I don't see why they can't just do a parody of Cheers set in a bar on the Citadel pre ME1 and just run with that story concept.

I wanted to see a take on Shepard's story because I think it would've been awesome for the team dynamic alone, and in my head I feel like there are canon choices that make sense but I do enjoy watching other's people walkthroughs so I wouldn't have complained. But I understand why they're doing it like this, it worked for Fallout.

Halo changed too much and tried to gaslight fans about it. That was it's undoing. If you're gonna make an adaptation with familiar characters then make it familiar, going with an original story like Fallout allows you to play in the sandbox more.

I do hope some of the characters show up. Having Garrus and Wrex banter with each other on screen would be *chef's kiss*

The problem with trying to adapt Shepard in the TV-show to appease the fans starts at the casting alone. Do you go female Shepard or male Shepard? Because that decision alone will alienate the other 50% of the fanbase and the tv-Shepard will be Shepard only in name, but have very little in common with the character you spent 3 games playing as.

I think this is a flawed notion, I chose BroShep for one run through and FemShep for another. What drew me in was the overall story and my interactions with the crew.

Real fans of the series would probably enjoy whatever route they took as long as the story was cohesive, made narrative sense, and they nailed the crew.

You could easily bring back the VAs for Garrus, Wrex, Tali, etc to voice the characters and that would go a long way to appease the fans.

Also, Mass Effect is a big franchise but let's not act like it's a massive fan base, at the end of the day, a good show will be good and that will draw fans, many who will probably have never played the games, in.

Dealing with the casting of Shepard would likely be a nightmare, so it's probably best to avoid it entirely.

Sure, but you can't please everyone, and media discourse has become intolerable these days. If you write and cast Shepard as a male, you get complaints from one crowd. You cast a female Shepard, people will complain the show is woke casting. It's nauseating.

Yeah but do those people really make a difference with the numbers? It's nauseating, but a good show will break through that noise.

It's hard because streaming metrics are so misleading, so I don't really know. But I mean look at Halo. They did a show with Master Chief and said it was its own thing because of the SILVER TIMELINE, and fans and audiences rejected it.

Prime Video is going with more of a Fallout approach here.

And then you have God of War, which is starting with the Asgard saga mainly because that's what's popular now and what people are playing, but it also focuses on Kratos' redemptive arc. Kratos acts far more heroic, contrite, and regretful in the Asgard saga.

I love the Greek saga because I love those games and I love how Kratos is this self-hating, self-loathing lunatic who is consumed with revenge and only cares about satiating his own revenge. And it's not really until the end that he finally starts trying to turn over a new leaf. But more moderate and progressive audiences would probably reject that take.
