Mass Effect

They will get made-- and Mark Wahlberg will star in all of them as every character.

The way I see it, games are going to get their due as far as cinematic adaptations go sooner or later. Look at how comic books have taken off in Hollywood in recent years-- in the 90's, it was absurd to think that any comic not called Superman or Batman would get a serious cinematic adaptation, and yet now not a year goes buy without a few big tentpole movies based on comic books. And what's more, comic books are considered a medium in decline. There are barely any new readers picking up the habit, and the fanbase that exists is not big enough to guarantee a big hit if a movie doesn't appeal to the mainstream. With games, however, they are the fasted growing form of mass media this side of the internet, and more and more people are getting into them. The day is fast approaching where a Playstation or Xbox is going to be as common as a DVD player.

We're getting to the point where if a game movie sucks, people are going to get a heads up on it a lot quicker because there will be a lot more people aware that a property is getting pooped on by the studios. Not that this means a studio can't drown out the fan rage with an expensive marketing campaign, but that tends to cut into profits quite a bit. If you throw money at a crappy movie you'll break even, but if you throw money at a good movie, you'll have a hit.

The thing is, videogaming is a more profitable industry than movies and home video right now. Comics have never been that popular like ever I think.

Videogaming is a billion dollar industry.

Weaver looks good for her age, but you're right, it is cliche. I didn't want to go with Hayek or Bellucci because as a matriarch, I thought that an older actress was more appropriate. Here's an idea:

Susan Sarandon. You would be hard pressed to find a more attractive 65 year old woman. Portraying a villain in a sci-fi movie would be playing against type for her, but I'm sure she could nail the role.

I've been thinking it over and I'd like to throw Carla Gugino up for consideration.

I like that. I could also see Gugino making a very good Samara (Though I doubt that Samara will make the movie. She's not that essential to the plot).

I would die to see a Mass Effect film, if its good. The games are kinda like a movie onto itself.

oh man that just reminded me wouldn't it be awesome if they did the film with a 70's grainy filter especially like the first Mass Effect or maybe even release two versions :D

I vote that Seth Green reprise his role as Joker.

then there is no reason to make a movie because it would never work.

you make it like the games and everyone will complain. you make it different and everyone will complain. :yay:

videogames are getting more and more cinematic and interactive all the time, turning Mass Effect into a film would just seem like a step back.
But I can't say I'd be upset if they tried.

Saying a video game can't be turned into a movie is like saying a book can't be either. You face a lot of the same problems with each medium in trying to adapt it for the screen. Yes, video games are getting more 'cinematic' but they still don't follow the standard film formula which is what you would have to adapt it too... like you would a book.

Well, Commander Shepard can be an extremely different character in appearance and demeanor depending on who's playing him or her. I think anyone who's experienced the games can agree that it's just weird seeing other Shepards. It's like, the "real" Shepard is the one you've gone through two adventures as. Not your friend's, not the default one they use in marketing, and not the actor who may potentially play him. Yours is the real one.

While that's certainly no concern to the people involved in the film, it's only one of many issues that can be avoided by telling an original story. As I said on the first page, the Mass Effect universe is definitely rich enough to support a unique story that is in no way tied to the plot of the games. The best course of action is tell the story of humans discovering the Prothean ruins on Mars, the First Contact War, and humanity finding its place in galactic civilization. That way it stays true to the spirit of the games without screwing up the game's story.

I agree. The game trilogy is Shepard's story, making a movie around him would be redundant.

The first contact war would make for a pretty boring movie coz nothing really happened though. Some ships blew up, the Turians cut off a colony from supply and then the council stepped in after Ashley's grandpops surrendered. Anyway even if they just adapted ME: Revelation I'd be happy; But there is definitely a lot of room for original stories to be told in the Mass Effect universe.

The chances of that happening though? lmao maybe in 2 decades hahah.

I play the ME games with a female Shephard, so maybe I'm biased, but I'd prefer they go that route for the movies. For the same reason I play the female counterpart, a female in the lead role for the movie would be unique. So many movies (especially scifi) have hulking "mans man" leads that it'd be totally refreshing for a strong female to take the lead.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but they're not going with female Shepard, mostly because male Shepard is cannon.

No, dreams are not allowed around here. You do know you're on the internet, right?

So is good or bad Shepard canon? It be nice to see him punch that reporter in the movie.

I don't know, but I'd imagine the first Mass Effect to be Renegade that slowly becomes a paragon. Like an alien racist who slowly learns to accept them would be a great route.

Wrex should def be mickey rourke.

ashley williams... natalie portman...

garrus...paul bettany

i liked the mila kunis as tali casting...but id like gemma arterton

samara ... i dont know. i hate to admit it but sandra bullock comes to mind.

Garrus would need to be cgi or makeup or both so I'd get the dude who plays him in the game. Cuz his voice is sex.
