Mass Violence in America: the All Inclusive Thread

That guy is helpful isn't he? What a helpful thing to post on social media at this time, yeah lets shame the cop(s) that worked at/near the school for the events that transpired because none of them were injured or killed in their attempts to prevent the gunman reportedly armed with two high powered rifles & body armour from entering the school.

Yeah, shame those guys, they're all the same anyway aren't they? Lets make them feel even more like **** than they presumably already do now knowing what followed their failed engagement with the shooter.

While i certainly dont agree with the Tweets tone, i get the idea where its coming from.
They had cops there, the one thing Republicans are willing to do...more security on schools.
Yet they werent able to stop him?
From what i gathered, a boarder security guard or what, who happens to be around shot and killed the shooter.

Republicans want to arm teacher, want to bring more security to schools, but what good does that if shooters have body armour and high powered rifles?
Not enough it seems.

I have seen reports that the shooter may not actually have had body armor.

And if cops aren't willing to put their lives on the line for children, that what is even the point of them?

The Onion's homepage just now:

More cops, more guns, arm the teachers and it still happens? There must not be enough guns. Republican logic is never based in reality.

The sad angry thing is this will change nothing. More "thoughts and prayers" from politicians and total inaction and indifference from Republicans who will go back to "voter fraud" and attempts to undermind the Constitution and personal rights. Attacks on transgender and women's rights, homosexual rights and any other rights that don't involve bullets.

Yeah, the shooter did not have body armor. American cops are unique in that they have enough money to do whatever they want, but are also too cowardly to do their jobs when it matters.

I was waiting for The Onion to republish the "No Way To Prevent This" piece on shootings, and they finally did today.

Maybe I'm jaded and cynical, but I expect a lot of posturing and talking, and a few executive actions that don't mean much, but don't believe anything will come of it.

You're just being realistic because they're already sounding the horn that it's too soon, ten years later, to be politicizing the tragedy. I'll never forget the feeling of helplessness as a 25 year old that I felt in that Chick Fil-A drive thru when news of Sandy Hook broke. I should say I can't believe that now as a parent of two boys that we've just done nothing since then except fail our way through a pandemic that stopped these massacres for 18 months. But the truth is I'm not as we normalized the Tea Party to the extent we let it develop cancer that has metastasized itself into the GQP.

Yeah, the governor was all like 18 year Olds have been able to buy long guns for 60 years, but school shootings have only happened just recently. Well, I'm pretty sure 18 year Olds weren't buying assault weapons 60 years ago. Just saying...

Given how defensive the cop seems to be, I am going to expect the police response is going to be much, much worse than Parkland.

He should have focused his Tweet/anger more on the lawmakers than trying to blame/shame the cop(s) that were unable to prevent the shooter from initially entering the school. Suggesting that because they weren't injured or killed that they didn't try hard enough is incredibly distasteful & unhelpful IMO.

I mean the answer to stopping guns should never be, add more guns or have bigger guns. The answer should be don't let civilians buy firearms, particularly the sort favoured in these sort of senseless acts that can shoot 20+ shots before needing to reload.

So we shouldn't have been angry at Scot Peterson for abandoning his duty in Parkland. Just because SCOTUS says that law enforcement officers are under no obligation to actually help the public does not mean we should not expect cops to put their lives on the line to protect others, most particularly the most innocent and defenseless.

They should have thrown their bodies at him and taken bullets if thats what it took to bring him down. They should have fought him tooth and nail if necessary. I dont expect them to be happy about it, to feel no fear, or to want to sacrifice themselves, but they should be prepared to die to protect civilians. At a moments notice. Anyone not willing to make that sacrifice shouldn't be in law enforcement.

We really need to do a better job recruiting and conditioning law enforcement officers. Their duty to protect is not only when its convenient or when the odds are in their favor.

They are being cagey with the details of the timeline. The more they do, the more suspicious I become.

I'm not talking about Parkland, I'm talking about Uvalde.

This has been discussed in another thread I believe how it takes more training to become a tradesman like a plumber or electrician than it does to become a law enforcement officer in the US.

God damn that's heartbreaking & depressing to watch. :(

Yes, yes, let us give all the love and respect that the blue line deserves. Why do we allow these people control over life and death?

Dragging their feet to do their jobs while schoolchildren and teachers are being killed?

Just cowards. So much for protecting and serving.
