This is the most random thing ever :hehe:

But I'm watching Master and Commander at the moment, just reached the "lesser of two weavels" scene, and I just thought...this is like, one of THE greatest films I've ever, ever, ever seen. No hyper-bole.

I was under the impression it was under-rated?

Who agrees with me on it's sheer awesomness?

Russel Crowe was one of my favorite actors but I honestly have no interest in ever seeing that movie again. Nothing about it excited me or kept me on the edge of my seat. I just sat there somewhat bored throughout the whole movie wondering when it was going to get interesting.

i saw it in theaters and thought it was really good, but i havent seen it since.

Hmmm, I thought Crowe was immense in it. Maybe even better than Gladiator.

There is a moment where he is talking about Nelson to his crew, it's just so believable. Subtle brilliance.

To each his own though I spose.

It's definitely worth a re-watch, IMO.

I never really thought of it as highly as I do now after the first couple viewings. But I catch it whenever it's on TV and my appreciation grows.

I agree that it's highly underrated. This was just one of those few movies that I loved every single thing about. As close to perfection as a movie can get, imo. Peter Weir is one of the greats. And yeah, it does get better with every viewing.

Also, I think Paul Bettany was also brilliant in this. I love his enthusiasm to check out the animals on the island they go to. He's like a kid in a candy store.

Paul Bettany OWNS this movie. Crowe is great in it, as are the other cast members, but Bettany is simply brilliant.

I haven't seen Bettany in anything in a while. Where has he been?

He was in that Inkheart with Brendan Frazer and Helen Mirren. I haven't seen that though.

This is one of the best movies ever made. I love to just put it on and get lost in it. It is one of those movies that holds your attention the whole time through. I deffinitly thought it should have continued with some of the other books.

I absolutely adore this movie. Russel Crowe once again gives an amazing performance but Paul Bettany is the scene stealer. The scene on the Galápagos Islands is my favourite scene in the movie (Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major!).
I am so glad someone made this thread or i would have.
An extremely underrated film.

Its fantastic movie ... Just watched it again a few days ago on UK TV and was reminded how well made the whole thing is.

Crowe just looks like he is enjoying every minute of it and in real life Bettany is one of his best friends which really shows on screen.

Hes not done much since the Da Vinci Code .... Had a look on imdb and he has some stuff on the way as well as more voice work in Iron man 2.

Even his voice work in Iron Man was brilliant I thought. Bettany is one of my favourite actors. He's my choice for Joker if it ever happens.

Damn good movie. It reminds me of some of the more charming moments in Star Trek at times too.

I think the book series it's based on is amazing too.

Loved it. Bettany was the best he's ever been, short of GANGSTER NO. 1. Weren't there supposed to be sequels to this?

It's so strange that this movie is considered "under-rated" now, because it did well at the box office when it came out, and it did very well with critics. Then people just sorta...forgot about it.

Yes, I was kind of surprised that this movie is now "underrated". I love the whole thing myself. I'll never forget that two weavils joke (nor, from the books, Dr Maturin's quip about the dog watch).

It was quite a success, and the only real surprise here is that Fox doesn't realise just how good a franchise it would have. Then again, anything short of megabucks wouldn't convince Tom Rothman to greenlight a sequel (and even then, God knows what else would have happened).

Still, a fine movie and a fresh take on an action movie (seriously, how often do you see two action stars sit down to play a bit of Boccerini?).
