...really? Thats all I have to say. I've heard all of the hype about this movie for years. 11 Academy Award nominations, number 19 on the AFI's top 100 films list. And this is the piece of crap I get? Really?
First of all, character development is basically zero. Am I supposed to care about these people? Damned if I know. All they do is go from point a to point b as the plot dictates without ever really giving us any motivation for their actions or reason to care about what they're doing. Hell, the little bit of development we see in the main character is him screwing Faye Dunaway, and even then, the romance is under-developed and feels forced. Oh, and during this he reveals some out of the blue story about how his lover died in Chinatown? Maybe I'd give a damn if we actually saw the slightest bit of emotion out of this character regarding anything.
The plot is equally incoherrant. We are introduced to several subplots, almost all of which go no where and they lead up to the shocking revelation of an incest child. That was what the movie built up to? Really!?! And at that point, the driving force behind every character in the movie (the water engineer's murder) becomes irrelevant as it is basically thrown out the door and shrugged off and lazily explained away.
And then the woman is shot, and no one really gives a damn because she was a completely unlikable character. And then the movie just abruptly ends.
Talk about an overrated piece of crap. The only redeeming factor of this movie is Jack Nicholson, but there is so little for him to do with the character, even his performance isn't that great.
What a waste of film
