...really? Thats all I have to say. I've heard all of the hype about this movie for years. 11 Academy Award nominations, number 19 on the AFI's top 100 films list. And this is the piece of crap I get? Really?

First of all, character development is basically zero. Am I supposed to care about these people? Damned if I know. All they do is go from point a to point b as the plot dictates without ever really giving us any motivation for their actions or reason to care about what they're doing. Hell, the little bit of development we see in the main character is him screwing Faye Dunaway, and even then, the romance is under-developed and feels forced. Oh, and during this he reveals some out of the blue story about how his lover died in Chinatown? Maybe I'd give a damn if we actually saw the slightest bit of emotion out of this character regarding anything.

The plot is equally incoherrant. We are introduced to several subplots, almost all of which go no where and they lead up to the shocking revelation of an incest child. That was what the movie built up to? Really!?! And at that point, the driving force behind every character in the movie (the water engineer's murder) becomes irrelevant as it is basically thrown out the door and shrugged off and lazily explained away.

And then the woman is shot, and no one really gives a damn because she was a completely unlikable character. And then the movie just abruptly ends.

Talk about an overrated piece of crap. The only redeeming factor of this movie is Jack Nicholson, but there is so little for him to do with the character, even his performance isn't that great.

What a waste of film :ikyn

Also, Roman Polanski is a pedophille. Doesn't really say much about the quality of the movie, but I feel like it should be pointed out any time he comes up in discussion.

I like Chinatown, although I don't exactly understand why it was so great as its reputed to be.

I've never seen it, but I'm sure I would agree with Matt if I had.

And thats really what I am going for with these threads. Sure, these movies I trash may even be good, but their legacy is very undeserved. The Graduate, Chinatown, etc...they are okay. They are not the pinnacle of film making. The problem is, for so long people have been praising them, that others have become afraid to say they are anything but genius and be looked down upon by snooty critics.

My sister watched it and told me she doesn't get what the big deal is...she also said that she thought that Jack was miscast.

What other classics have you insulted?

Matt made my kitten cry.

no, kidding. I agree 100% with the OP's post. Especially on his post about Superman: The Movie. :)

I dont even know where to begin with this one...

Great script , fantastic soundtrack, amazing cast and beautifully directed.
A crime noir classic worthy of all its praise and just about the perfect film.
If the plot wasn't coherent Matt, put down the doobie.

Superman? How dare you!!!:cmad:

I just watched the Donner cut. Fantastic.

I love this movie. Matt...Matt...Matt...to each his own I guess. But the shock value is still there.

i didn't care much for Chinatown either, i didn't like the ending that much... Poor thing.. It was ok acting wise, but some parts dragged.

yea i don't know why its so high on the best films list.

As much as I like Chinatown, I wish it had more of a film noir look. Then again, it's more of a neo-noir right?

wow, Eggyman, I'm shocked. It's one of them Hollywood classics...go watch this film. You'll see Jack actually 'act' this time around. I think after the 'Shining', he just gave up. LOL.

Passed under the radar I guess lol.

I'll give it a look.

I saw it years ago and found it a bit dull, my fav Polanski film is 'Frantic'.

My God all of you people fail.

So Matt, what films deserve their legacy? Just because you have bad taste doesn't mean that Chinatown is undeserving of its legacy. It's a brilliant film and anyone who agrees with Matt should be ashamed of themselves.

Whatever. Having bad taste doesn't disqualify you from having an opinion, it just makes your opinion wrong.

No it shouldn't because it has nothing to do with his merits as a director. Gawd.
