Welcome to my newest thread. Since my daughter has been born, I've not been able to go out as much to the movies and such. So, I've decided to start renting some "classics," I've never seen. And I find that most of them do in fact...blow. Yet somehow people have become comfortable declaring these crappy movies excellent because some snooty critic says its great and you're stupid if you don't like it, so everyone acts like its great and some how crap becomes a classic. Well I'm gonna shake things up and rattle some cages with this thread (Movies 205, Kevin Roegele, I'm coming for you guys :cmad: ).

I'm going to start with The Graduate, which I recently watched. What an overrated, pretentious piece of crap. None of the characters are relatable or believable. It tries to be experimental and just comes off with many scenes that feel forced as a result. And if I hear Simon and Garfunkle one more time in the next 20 years, I'm going to shoot Mike Nichols.

On a scale from one to ten, I'm giving this a 2.5. I seriously do wonder how this is number 7 on the AFI list yet alone number 9 on their top comedy list.

To quote Jay Sherman...IT STINKS!

Make my Hoffman, Rain Man.

WHAT?!! It's a great film! In fact, I just comepleted it in my flim study class last week. I wrote a one page analysis about it. I'll post it, but I'll need to see the grade I got on it first.

Oh, and "The Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel will be used in Watchmen. :oldrazz:

Whats great about it? Its about a half an hour too long, is insanely boring because you can't relate to any of the characters...and frankly, is depressing as hell. I mean, the ending, he goes through all the trouble to get this girl only to unhappy with his choice and make her unhappy as a result? So what was the point of watching his pointless actions. In fact, I've just knocked it down to 1 and 1/2 stars! :cmad:

And I'll put you down for "bad movie," in the poll.

I'm gonna have to agree with Matt on this one. It was just very dull.

However, there are far worse movies out there, so I'm gonna vote Bad Movie.

Saw it for a film class I took... so that means I had to think it was a good movie... :hehe:

Dammit, I need to post that analysis that I typed up. I have to show you that it's a great film. Show you the way!

That is what The Man wants you to think!

Well, I had to notice all the non-dialogue and non-acting good things about it... which was mostly interesting... but then again, meh.

Do you think its a great movie...or do you think The Man will give you a better grade if you say it is?

You know sometimes I say that I hate the Godfather just to piss people off. It's like people just want to be right, they don't care about the why.

God, I'm so surprised you all feel that way. I think it's a great film. It was daring back then, and it still holds up.

Non-dialogue and non-acting is just something pretentious directors and critics say are in movies so they can feel superior to everyone for getting what others don't. In turn, people fear they will feel dumb if they don't agree...and the process repeats and crap like this becomes considered a "classic."

I think it's a great film. Hell, my brother caught the last half of it last night, and I never thought he was into that kind of stuff but he actually liked it alot.

I'm going to go on the record of saying the crappy Eugene Levy/Sam Jackson buddy comedy "The Man," was better than The Graduate.

Where is the nearest mental institution for you? :woot: Well, I'm leaving, I have film study tomorrow, and I hope I get the analysis back. If I don't, I'll post it anyway.

It's true. I didn't like North by Northwest... even with all that special super director things that are in there.

But I enjoyed some of the things in the Graduate, especially that montage about the affair... but that doesn't mean I will watch it over and over again.

Well, that just makes you stupid.

Explain to me what is great about it Sarge.

Matt, I'll reply to your thread.

Though it has been a while since I have seen the picture, I do remember enjoying the piece. You bring up several good points of course. I agree with your critique so Simon and Garfunkle. Personally, the best thing Art Garfunkel ever did was his role as the singing moose on Arthur.

The film prospered in the area of making the audience feel uncomfortable. You feeling of disconnection from the characters was the point of the film. And Dustin Hoffman did fantastic in this regard. What 18 year old with a red Porsche would act so polite? His oddness makes you uncomfortable but you still can't look away.

Plus, the montages were fantastic. The character had a great, realistic arc and the not-necessarily happy ending is quite a unique aspect in film. Sure the film didn't get wrapped up in the end with a tidy bow but defiantly still worth watching.

And frankly my friend, two words: George Feeny.

Can I get a What!

It's funny. It contains one of Dustin Hoffman's best performances, as a dorky awkward kid who gets lucky and gets to bang a hot older lady. Mrs. Robinson is a great song. It's dated, but its dated nature doesn't prevent it from being interesting, since it's a bit of an eye opener in regards to how sexual politics in the 1960's was beginning to develop, the changing relationships between parents and their maturing children, and also Mrs. Robinson was hot in the movie. That's pretty much it. That Sam Jackson/Eugene Levy comedy doesn't really work on the levels that the Graduate works. The Graduate isn't "great" in the sense that it's timeless and perfect, but calling it crap is so laughably ignorant and self-consciously iconoclast that I just had to call you out on it.

The Graduate is a really good movie (not a great movie) elevated to classic status because of how perfectly it encapsulated the time in which it was made. And also, parts of it are still very funny. And you're simply selling it short in order to present your opinion in some sort of populist, "un-pretentious" manner.
