MCU Doctor Doom

And Tobey before him and Holland after...

The track record for this stuff isn't great in movies in general.

And especially if Doom gets played by some kind of actor with the kind of cachet that they want to capitalize on... I would expect us seeing Doom's face a lot, or at least way more than traditionalist comic book fans would like.
This is why it's best to go with an unknown for the role. Not only do you get the added benefit of actor disappearing into character as opposed to "Leonardo DiCaprio as Dr. Doom" but they also aren't going to be prone to demanding face time, and you can get Doom in the mask for most of his scenes

What's considered unknown though? Julian McMahon wasn't exactly an A list actor or even D list. Yet he only adopted a Doom mask at the end of the FF film and still showed his face a fair bit even in the 2nd film.

Hmm, I'm thinking an indie darling with very strong dramatic chops, possibly someone who isn't even American and of Roma descent (This is a significant part of Doom's backstory in Latveria that tends to get ignored).

Somebody Marvel can pluck out of obscurity to become the MCU's greatest villain

Claes Bang?

Claes Bang is 52 years old. which I'm no agist but Marvel ain't casting a 52 year old Reed as a counterpart

I think the only way we don't see Doom's sans mask all the time is if it's a Darth Vader situation. Get someone, stunt performer or dancer maybe, in the physical costume with a major actor to provide the voicework. That actor can also portray Doom in flashbacks and the initial origin.

He could work in theory if they do it like this

But it really depends on if they want the full performance. Alternatively, I could see them going the Iron Man route with Doom too and having the actor only wear half the suit to be CG'd in Post. Much less physically taxing for an older actor. And Bang isn't THAT old to start with.

I hope the mask reveals are spaced out and saved for emotional moments

Full disfigurement or minor facial scar?

Always preferred Kirby's take that it originally was just a facial scar.

I don’t think Bang is too old, but I do think he’s older than what Marvel will go with. Just my gut feeling. I also think they’ll go big with that casting.

Me too. It goes to the core of Doom's image of himself and why he can't stomach Reed. I will say that if that Kaboom was a big as it showed in the comics, it wouldn't have left a little scar. I'm remembering that from memory, so take my recollection of the big Kaboom for what it's worth. Still, I don't think we should worry about Doom's age or stuff like that. He should mostly be behind the mask.

Doctor doom can have little a scratch, as a treat.

Eh, I still think it will play into audience perception. Like during press tours when they have the actors discussing their roles. It will be weird listening to two guys talk about the relationship between these two contemporaries when there is a visible age difference between them in real life.

I dunno, maybe I'm off there. But I still fully expect mid-30s to early 40s for both Reed and Doom.

Doom could've been a mature student at university in Reed's course, or maybe Reed was a prodigy and younger than his peers. Either way, having Doom be older but shown up by a younger genius would irk him and make him envious. It could be like the rivalry between Salieri and Mozart in Amadeus.

This is true. I suppose I just like the idea of them being around the same age because it says a lot about Doom's hatred. That given everything he's accomplished in about the same span of time, he's still getting shown up by Reed. And despite knowing he's the only one that can save the world, Reed still gets to be the hero.

I know you can still have that stuff if Doom is older, but I guess it just works better for me when by all appearances they look like total equals.

Or what if a younger Reed Richards just basically blows Doom out of the water intellectually? Warns him about the big kaboom, Doom can’t handle being preached to by an upstart, goes ahead with his plan and gets a little owie?

Dark beat me to it.

I don’t hate it, but then the hatred just feels less justified to me. Like there’s so much ego that way, which I get is very much in keeping with Doom. Buy I’d rather that ego come from actually being right that from a perceived sense of superiority stemming from an age difference. I can just see the “OK boomer” memes lol.

I just like the idea that Doom is actually better. That he really is the guy that can save us all, but the one thing he fails to see is that it isn’t up to him to make that choice. That feels like it’s made more clear when there isn’t like a generational gap if that makes sense.

This shows how much we all bring to these mythological tall tales we all love.

See, cuz my take has always been that Doom of course believes he's in the right and that his way is in the long run the correct one and that he will be shown by history to have been the hero of the story all along.

But he's not right. He will never be the true savior of humanity. People will never praise the "Greatness of Doom". Ultimately he can never beat Reed and the FF or the other heroes. He's absolutely a most impressive and amazing man. Like his peers, a marvel, a miracle. But that power and intellect is in the service of a personality that despite all the scientific accumen Victor has, can't fathom the universe objectively. Reed might have only a hare's breath mores self awareness than Doom to a certain degree... But it's what makes all the difference.

The dialog by Reed when he puts Valeria to bed sums it up (Waid nailed it here):

"Once upon a time there was a genius who... A very bright man who...

...

...

...

Once upon a time there was a very arrogant man who did something very stupid. Without proper preparation or shielding he took his friends through a wave of radiation that made them all something other than human.

His guilt was unbearable.
And... Deserved.

These were the people he loved. And he destroyed their lives. Thanks to him, they were fated to be freaks. Lab specimens... Or worse, unless he changed that somehow.

Unless... He made the world see them for what they were. Three of the best and bravest people anyone could hope to meet.

So he refused to let them operate in secret. He gave them home in a city of 8 million. And he gave them costumes, and a flying car... And encouraged them to parade around with some pretty outlandish names... "Mister Fantastic"? Does that sound like something anyone would really want to call themselves? No. But that's the kind of name that makes headlines. And T-shirts. And action figures. He knew that would keep people from fearing them.

You see... Glamour and fame, weren't options. They were necessities. Because maybe by turning his friends into celebrities, he could be... forgiven, for taking their normal lives away.

...

...

...

Someday."

And in nutshell there's the difference between Doom and Reed. That self analysis, that self awareness, the ability to see beyond oneself as indeed a part of a grander whole in the universe... Doom for all his towering intelligence is utterly dumbfounded by that kind of introspection and thus incabpable of learning the important truths one might find by doing so.

Doom's ego is this massive thing... Because it has to cover up an inner life that is far more fragile than he cares to let on. Because honestly what's Doom's vendetta based on?

"Hey dude... I think your math is wrong."

That's it. That's what he HATES Reed over. And Reed was right. And Doom basically ****ed himself over by not listening. And that type of guy?

That guy?

He'll never be the savior of the world/humanity. For all his iron will (seriously... Doom would eat Batman for breakfast, pick his teeth clean with the Darth Maul's lightsaber and then on a whim start to **** around with Doctor Who just for ****s and giggles... ) he can't possibly perceive that he has blindspots, flaws or can miscalculate.

I often think, and this is just my head canon, that is why in stories you have Reed refer to him in such an informal, even collegial way. To Doom, Reed is always "Richards". Said with a snear under that mask. "Who will save your family now, RICHARDS?!"

How does Reed refer to Doom though?

"Victor... Please... What do you hope to accomplish with all this?"

To Reed... No matter the armor, no matter the power, no matter the honorifics of titles and international diplomacy, no matter what god-like ability Doom creates, subordinates to himself or that which he steals from others... To Reed, Doctor Doom is still just... Victor. A fellow brilliant student who couldn't fathom that somebody else might be right, and was too foolish to realize how his own actions would affect himself. And who, unlike Reed, will never learn his lesson. And when you can't learn from a mistake... You are fated to repeat it again, and again.

Wonderfully said.

i would change up the dynamic with Reed and Victor in the movies. i would have them working for SHIELD in the past (in the comics Reed was in the army). Reed and his team (Consisting of Ben Grimm and Franklin Storm) go on a mission to Latveria there they meet Victor and bring him back with them. After some time its found out that Victor was just working with them so that he could get the tech to free his people. Reed turns him in and in his escape Victor is caught in an explosion that scares his face.
For years Victor lives in heading bidding his time until the Snap gives him the opportunity to take control of Latveria. While at the same time Reed, Ben and Franklin have moved on to working with Nick Fury at SWORD here Reed meets Johnny (a pilot) and Sue (another scientist) the four of them get their powers while investigating an anomaly in space.
