This probably isn't something big in the US media, but it sure is in the UK media.
Children go missing all the time. And yeah, its terrible when it happens, more so when the child has been kidnapped. And quite rightly it should be quite high up on the news in the national media of that country.
But for weeks on end, it was top priority not only in Portugal and the UK, but all over Europe. Taking priority over such things as the Sudan crisis, Iraq, and other worldwide and national items of big importance. Never before have I seen such a massive and wide reaching campaign as the campaign for information on where Madeleine could be. Should I feel terrible for saying I got sick of seeing her on the news, and wished that other events got half the attention her disappearance has got?
It was like they were saying this one girl was more important than the deaths of thousands of children and the ethnic cleansing in Sudan.
And its not just that, but the campaign is excessive to the point of rediculousness. I believe its a waste and a drain on police resources. AND, I believe its actually dentrimental to the actual police investigation, which a couple of people have actually come out and said.
If Madeleine went missing in Portugul, what use is it to the police if they have several hundred phone calls from people from Germany saying "yeah, I think I saw a suspicious couple with a blonde girl in Berlin", and a few hundred calls from people in Latvia saying the same thing? May be a slight exageration with Latvia, but you see what I mean. The police would have to follow up with every single phone call. And with practically nearly every country in Europe involved, thats alot of ****ing phone calls. Its a drain on the police in each individual country, when the campaign and investigation would be much more effective if restricted to the immediate surrounding countries of Portugal.
And then, I saw posters in Belfast. I ****ing kid you not. "Call this number if you have seen Madeleine McCann". Are you ****ing kidding me? Why and how would the kidnappers bring her to Belfast?? Pointless, complete waste of time and money. And then, one step further, they've started putting ads up of her before movies in the cinema. What?? What the ****??
It might sound terrible, but its because her parents are rich. They can afford people to do their publicity and get people interested. So, whats the media gonna do the next time some black kid ends up dead, or goes missing? Which, by the way, happens all the ****ing time and the media covers it for about a day.
