MGM to Unveil New Tentpoles!
Source: Variety September 10, 2006

In a Variety article talking about MGM's move back into the tentpole business, the trade mentions a few highly-anticipated projects that are in the works:

Over the next few years, MGM is planning to release half a dozen films, some in the $150 million to $200 million-plus range. Studio is ready to unveil such high-profile projects as "Terminator 4"; one or two installments of "The Hobbit," which Sloan hopes will be directed by Peter Jackson; and a sequel to "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan.

It has already announced a "Pink Panther" sequel and the next 007 pic "Bond 22," due out in November 2008. "Rocky Balboa" unspools in February.

The pics are all franchises that MGM owns the rights to through its 4,000-title library. The goal is to release two or three tentpoles a year, all of which will be made with financial partners, including Wall Street money or other studios.

MGM and New Line have been in a rights war for The Hobbit for a while.

Oh, lord, I would be so happy if they actually could get The Hobbit and do it right, with Jackson and Ian McKellan and Ian Holm. It would be so awesome.

Would that be easier if New Line got the rights to it since they did LOTR?

Okay , it's all coming back to me again lol.

I forgot that the right of the hobbit are (partially) owned by MGM.
There is actually no away MGM is selling those right , especially given the enormous success of the LOTR trilogy. Heck if a Hobbit movie was made , it might even gross 1 billion worldwide.

But i didn't know MGM had the right of Terminator. I thought WB made T3 back in 2003

Not really, PJ and NL aren't exactly the best of terms after LOTR, they had an issue over him not getting the amount of money he was supposed to from it.

That is good for us then because if MGM gets to do The Hobbit Peter Jackson wont have to work with New Line

If they don't get Jackson and WETA, I'm honestly not interested.

I think that's pretty much how the vast majority of the planet feels.

The movie would probably bomb, or barely crawl to moderate success without Jackson/WETA's involvement.

I don't care for a T4, and not really a Hobbit movie, because LOTR is finished, but I'd still see them both. :(

But The Hobbit takes place before LOTR.

Have you actually read The Hobbit?

It's a prequel, a completely different story before anything was said in the first place. The Hobbit is not part of LOTR.

Wow, sounds pretty good. The new Bond films, Hobbit, Pink Panther sequel and Rocky Balboa.

MGM, is playing its cards very smart.

why didnt they make the hobbit before the lotr trilogy?

Well, there is. There's an entire, swooping story to tell. It just comes before the LotR trilogy. Bits of the Hobbit may well provide a greater understanding of some of the references made in LotR films.

It's part of the same world. How the ring found it's way to Bilbo etc. The relationship between Gandalf and Bilbo.

I'd love to see a Terminator 4 that showcases the war, Skynet, the creation of the T-101/T-800 models, Reese, and then have it end with Reese being sent back to 1984.

So in a way it can be a prequel and complete the Terminator saga.

The incident with the dragon :).

I know.
I just think it would've been better before the LOTR, even though if it did come out, I'd still see it.
