The dude was born in November 1917....incredible. And whilst of course he's a little too old to play the role now, and Michael Caine is fantastic, for me the definitive Alfred is Gough. I prefer his version to the comicbooks, even.

90? Goodness. I wonder what keeps him so spry

I agree with you guys. Michael Gough is Alfred to me. He gave such a great performance in all 4 films. I wish he could be in the new films instead of Michael Caine.

Gough IS Legend.

He's also catholic.

Michael Gough will always be Alfred to me. And come to think of it, the only Alfred I've never liked was Caine's....

90.... my God. Can't believe he's still with us! And I'm glad! He sounds just about the right age to be Alfred in DKR! :-P

I hope he lives to be 127.

Gouth WAS Alfred he had the right amount of sly british wit hard work coupled with an obvious love for Wayne he was a gentelmans, gentelman not a cockny geezer like caines alfred. I agree i rate gouth as the ultimate alfred closely followed by BTAS alfred voiced by Efrem Zimbalist Jr who coinsidently is also 89 being born in 1918!

Anna Nicole Smith killed her self because Michael Gough wouldn't marry her.

A great man and a legend. Hope to see him in Sweeny Todd or Beleive it or Not...

Selina: "Could you just make up a sonnet or something, a dirty limerick??
Alfred: "One has just sprung to mind"

Pure Alfred. Keep on going Mr Gough

As a fan of the old Hammer Horror films of the 50's - 70's, I was thrilled to see Michael returning to a dark and gothic setting in the Burton Batman films. He and Christopher Lee co-starred in "The Horror of Dracula" in 1958, and both are still active today, almost half a century later! Remarkable. Thank goodness that Burton is such an old-school horror fanatic. I wish his plans to have Vincent Price in Batman Returns had worked out, as it would've also provided a nice link to the tv series.

Anyway, Michael made a nearly perfect Alfred, and as DocBrown pointed out, he is now about the age Alfred would be in The Dark Knight Returns. :yay:

Michael Gough was a great Alfred!

And, judging by this pic, if they had made a Batman film in the mid-seventies, he could've been a great Jim Gordon as well:

I think we've been lucky that all Alfreds have been great. Alan Napier was a goofy Alfred. I always loved it when he dressed up as Batman so the caped crusader and Bruce Wayne could be seen together. lol. :D And, Michael Cain's Alfred is a great father figure for Bruce. The man with the voice of reason. And, yeah, Gough was the best. His Alfred did his job as the butler but at the same time cared tremondously about Bruce. He was always giving him the greatest advices and heck, yeah, he took Vicki to the batcave but why wouldn't he? He wanted what was best for Bruce.

He is my favourite too, I cant believe he is 90 though, I did like Caine alot in Begins and i thought he did a great job, but it didnt feel like Alfred to me if you know what im getting at.

Gough was an overrated Alfred. All he did was talk all proper English, suddenly that makes him a good Alfred.

He did more than that. He was Bruce's voice of reason. Go back and watch the films. He always has some words of wisdom to tell Bruce. Even in Batman and Robin.

I disagree. Gough brought a dignified warmth to the character I have honestly not ever seen outside of the comics. Sure, Cain turned in a very good, very caring performance, but at the same time, he never quite captured the dignified manner Alfred has always had. And I'm not talking about accents.

He will always be Alfred in my mind . I thought he was older than 90.

You probably imagine all Englishmen are like Alfred and that Gough hardly did any acting at all.

Yeah, you weren't paying attention, were you?

Gough will always be my Alfred.
