As we all know TASM is going to be shown in IMAX 3D. Could any film buffs give me an idea of what the difference between an IMAX 3D experience and a standard 3D experience is? I mean, the IMAX website states it as

"digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology."

What kind of difference does this make in the presentation of the film? Is it substantial enough to make it that much more fantastic?

Thanks in advance!

I can't answer your question, but next time, you might wanna ask in the lounge thread, rather than start a whole thread about it. The mods might lock it.

IMAX is a huge screen. Huge. Like...I think it might be 2 times the size of a normal screen. The visuals are crisper because the size difference and the sound is much greater. I haven't experienced 3D IMAX, but I heard it's pretty amazing.

So, it's basically just a visual and sound improvement.

I am by no means an expert, but the one time I saw something in IMAX 3D my mind was blown. It was some space station documentary I saw on a field trip in junior high. I saw Tron in 3D and while that was great it doesn't compare to the picture & sound quality of IMAX.

Yes, but I thought that in order for the film to take advantage of the size of the screen, the film has to be shot with IMAX cameras? Or is that what the digital remastering is taking care of? Or maybe it's just the dimensions of the shot extend with IMAX cameras, similar to the way high definition cameras did for television?

I saw TDK in IMAX, and the bank heist scene was absolutely HUGE, but I remember after the first ten minutes or so, the dimensions normalized, and it was just a larger version of a normal theater screen. I never saw TDK on a standard theater screen, so I don't have a direct reference point for the improvement of the clarity, but I'm taking that there is a significant improvement?

Everything looks better in IMAX.

:)

The scenes you mentioned in TDK were filmed in IMAX, so by seeing them in a regular cinema you'd actually be watching a downscaled version. By seeing them it in IMAX, you saw it EXACTLY how the director intended for you to see them.

I'm pretty sure the cameras they're using for TASM are the same res as IMAX cameras... :S

Can anyone confirm that TASM will take advantage of the huge size ratios that an IMAX screen offers?

I think I'm the last person to have not seen a film in IMAX yet, lol.

I haven't either and I don't intend to. Don't wanna pay the extra money. To me, a movie probably wouldn't look any different than on a regular theater screen anyway.

I saw The Incredible Hulk in IMAX. It was pretty cool. Didn't see it in 3D though, so I can't really say.

It's definitely impressive. I mean, just the layout and look of an IMAX theater and screen really blows you away. Someone posted his in the TDKR forum:

And that's just comparing a true IMAX theater screen to an IMAX screen found in a standard cinema. A regular old cinema screen is smaller than the small IMAX screen.

It's ****ing mindblowing. And Gwendolyn...I can assure you...it looks very different.

You're missing out on a superior experience. :P

Yeah, if you go to a IMAX cinema as opposed to a cinema that has "IMAX" screens (which are really just miniature versions), then you'll experience it for real. lol "It wouldn't look any different to me than on a regular theater screen". Yes. It would.

I don't even think there are any Imax theaters where I live, so even I wanted to see a film in Imax, I couldn't. And a regular theater screen is big enough for me.

They don't even charge that much extra.

It's about £3, £4 more as opposed to a regular 3D cinema ticket where I live. If you have the option between IMAX/IMAX 3D and...well, a regular cinema/regular 3D...just go for the best one.

You sure? There's a pretty extensive list going over in the TDKR forums. Where ya from? I mean, if I'm speaking honestly, I'd wager to say that it'd be worth traveling 1-2 hours to experience a film in IMAX. It's a really mind boggling experience.

I guess that's why I wasn't wowed when I went to see something in IMAX...it wasn't the true scale.

And no, when you see a regularly filmed movie in IMAX, it doesn't take up the full screen.

I figured as much, but I'm wondering if the RED Epic has similar aspect ratios....gonna research that now actually...

All I found was that the RED Epic shoots at 5K resolution and the highest resolution IMAX cameras offer is 4K. I'm a film noob so I don't know what this necessarily means, but could it mean that TASM could potentially fit the dimensions of the IMAX screen?

Here's an interesting infographic:

Basically what I gather this means is that the EPIC is better than an IMAX camera?

All I know is that I hope my mind is blown when I see this movie in IMAX 3D. Because if it isn't, I'll be disappoint.

Now if somebody could find something similar for the IMAX camera....

There might be, but I wouldn't know. I know there's an imax at the Pink Palace Museum in Memphis, but I think they just show documentaries. Even if I wanted to go see a movie in Imax, I can't drive, so my parents would have to drive me, and there's no way they would when there's a Malco theater not far from our house.

Just searched for the resolution of IMAX and these are some quoted results from articles and forum posts:

"IMAX Digital is 4K"

"'IMAX Digital' is not the equivalent of 4K. The process merely uses two modified Christie CP2000 2K digital projectors to yield an overall resolution of 2160 X 2048 pixels."

(RED EPIC is supposedly 5,120 × 2,700 pixels)

"Most IMAX theatres use two 4000x2000 reolution projectors to produce an 8000x4000 resolution image. And IMAX shot films run at 48 FPS"

(I've seen many places state that the RED EPIC can shoot up to 300 FPS so I'm assuming TASM will be shot at 48 FPS)

This all leads me to believe that TASM is going to look ****ing ridiculous on a true IMAX screen.
