Horror Mike Flanagan’s CARRIE???

Flanigan does know how to make her outright hated, so yeah, probably should have expected that casting.

Meh. I do think Shapiro would’ve been a little bit more interesting, but I’m here for Flanagan regardless.
Yeah, even though I’m a little bummed, Flanagan has yet to make a bad show or film and he always has good instincts. Judging from that interview he did some time ago, he has a lot of interesting ideas for his adaptation, and he wouldn’t have done it if he thought it wasn’t something special or thought he really didn’t have something new to say or bring to the table.

I trust him on this.

I have yet to be disappointed from anything Flanagan's done that I've seen but that being said, this is the fourth adaptation and none of them have had a book accurate Carrie.

On paper, another Carrie adaptation isn't the sort of thing that grabs me at the moment. But Flanagan hits it out of the park for me more often than he doesn't, so you know, whatever. Look forward to it based purely on the strength of his work.

Not a huge selection of adult males in Carrie, so I have to imagine Flanagan will be embellishing a bit.

I still think the best approach might be something like what he did with The Haunting of Hill House. We’ve already had three fairly straightforward adaptations, might as well take some swings.

Can you talk a bit more about your vision for “Carrie”?

The thing I would say is the original story is half a century old and it’s wonderful. Its themes were about youth and bullying and the consequences of that. I believe that in today’s modern world, the power of what it means to be a bully, the breadth of that and the impact of bullying, have changed a lot. The central tenets are still the same, but it’s about much more than Carrie White. I can’t really talk about what we’re doing, I can only really talk about what we’re notdoing. We’re not retelling the story as it’s been told, and we’re not making a show about telekinesis. It’s in there, but that’s not what it’s about. There’s a version of it where Carrie White carries a tragic superhero origin story that goes horribly wrong. I feel like they’ve done that, too. So we’re focused way more on the destruction of a community through these very modern tools. What happens in a world where the internet has created an environment of perceived anonymity? Carrie White in the locker room in every iteration is a horrifying scene. Carrie White in the locker room when people have phones in their hands is a whole different thing.

Flanagan before the writer’s strike: The Dark Tower is my dream project and I can’t wait to share more of what we’re working on! We even have some of the roles cast!

Flanagan after the writer’s strike: HEY GUYS IMMA MAKE ANOTHER EXORCIST MOVIE BECAUSE THOSE ARE ALWAYS SO GOOD AND THEN IMMA WRITE A CLAYFACE MOVIE THAT NO ONE WANTS AND OH YEAH WE FOUND OUT THERE WERE ANOTHER 350 SHORT STORIES BETWEEN STEPHEN KING’S COUCH CUSHIONS THAT WE ALSO NEED TO TURN INTO MOVIES AND HOW ABOUT A CARRIE REMAKE NO ONE HAS DONE THAT

In his defense, what's happening with Dark Tower might not be completely his fault. It's a property that already floundered before and flopped right out of the gate despite all the big touted plans for it. So it's already a tainted property. There was the TV pilot as well that didn't get picked up to series. So it might be difficult for the a new reboot to get greenlit.

Yeah, that’s true. He just really got my hopes up when he was taking about it a lot but now it seems like it’s all kinda fallen by the wayside.

I totally feel for Dark Tower fans on that, but it might be better for them to take their time and maybe grow some distance from the past versions. Like as a fan of The Witcher, it's hard to stomach what ultimately happened with the TV series. I totally dropped out after the second season.

But I imagine part of the issue with Dark Tower is probably getting other financiers, studios, and network partners on board who might have cold feet after the movie flopped and Prime Video didn't order the TV series.

All that aside, I'm much rather see Flanagan do something like Dark Tower because I think it has so much untapped potential rather than a Carrie remake or another Exorcist sequel we don't need.

Yeah. And to your point, you would think studios would also get cold feet about green lighting another Carrie or Exorcist adaptation after the last ones were so poorly received (though they did make money I guess).

I seem to recall King outright comparing Carrie to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold at one point, so I wonder if that might influence Flanagan’s take here. In the initial aftermath of Columbine, the media took the idea that those two were the victims of bullying and ran with it, but in the years since, we’ve learned that they themselves were bullies.

In the book, we’re given a window to a lot of the dark, negative thoughts that none of the prior adaptations could ever get into. The book also presents the massacre as a conscious decision on her part, rather than her just snapping.

I think we’re going to get a different side of Carrie White this time around.

Ooh, a Battlestar Galactica reunion.

And Heather Graham too.
