Miller is overrated.

I thought the Green Lantern return at the end was badass.

I don't care that I didn't do a spoiler. It's been like how many years? :cmad:

Green Lantern returned

I have no idea why he disappeared, who he is apart from the name and that he's from DC.

That is all.

What pisses me off about Frank Miller is, yes he's a good writer, in fact a damn good one. Yet somehow this mother****er gets his comics made into movies that are exact replicas of his work. Now how the hell does somebody manage that? Just look at how hard its been for Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman to get their works right on the screen. What is it about Frank Millers' writing that makes it so easy to get translated into film? Or is it just easier for our society to take a comic that treats women as objects, dudes as ridiculous badasses and the police as completely evil than it is for us to actually aproach something from a high intellectual level like Alan Moore might? Not that I don't like Miller, I love him, its just something I've been wondering about.

Let's see....
Batman Year One
Dark Knight Returns
Sin City
300

Looks like a fantastic resume to me.

Yeah, you don't get much better than that.

Don't forget Elektra either. Although her movie busted, she's a pretty big character.

I'm talking about Frank Millar, not Mark. Ever since Sin City the movie came out, he's been oogled over by fans, but I just don't think his stuff is any good. I read the Daredevil stuff, year one, sin city (and the movie) and, DK and DKR, and read the new Batman & Robin stuff, but aside from Y.O. I don't think any of it is good. It's just the same over the top, gritty crap with different characters. Even the movie, which yes, if I didn't like the comic, I wouldn't like the movie... i thought was bad. Granted, I'd still pay the $7.50 to see Alba work a pole, but aside from the artistic perspective, the movie wasn't worth my time. And now he's going to be writing and directing a Spirit movie? why? Maybe I have to read some spirit stuff, but from what I've read, he doesn't seem to fit to Millar's suit. Can someone help me out here?

Man...I thought you were talking about Kevin Millar, formerly of the Boston Red Sox.

I believe Alan Moore wants nothing to do with his works being brought to a different medium. He's not involved at all with the on again off again Watchmen project nor was he with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Miller I'm not sure if he worked with the 300's director like he did with Sin City.

cause miller actully is willing to work with hollywood and accpet things have to be changed and helps this change happen, where as moore throws a stroop and sulks for years when people do agree with everything he says

Well, for one thing, he's actively participated in getting his vision onto the screen. Moore has done nothing but b1tch and moan and detract from any attempts to adapt his work. Maybe if he'd participate in the process, instead, he and his fans would get something worth a damn on the big screen. I don't think he has any interest in the whole, thing, though. Not sure about Gaiman, but again, his participation would make the difference.

Yeah I suppose you guys are right about Moore sort of being a block in the way of his own movies being made...we all know that guy is a crazy hobo that is now writing porno anyway.
Anyway, I just think Miller has been extremely lucky in getting his films to the screen. It seems to me that its more luck than him actually helping anyone, as far as I know Sin City was started and Miller didn't want anything to do with it until Rodriguez told him he was going to make it entirely panel by panel, and as far as 300 goes I don't really know about that...

Okay, so you guys are right in the fact that Miller(so sorry for one letter typo, willhelm) being overrated is just my opinion, just as people thinking Millar (mark) or Bendis being overrated is just an opinion. However, when you can consistently put out work that gets in the top 5 spots (like millar's stuff, even his original work like Wanted) or putting out umpteen number of books a month and still have most of it being solid stuff (like Bendis), I think they have a right to have a rabid fan base. While what has Miller done lately that was any good? hell, what was the last thing he put out that sucked? Batman & Robin? When was the last issue of that? Over a year ago, wasn't it? Don't give me the "he's doing movies" excuse. If he had any loyalty to his fans, he'd have a number of comic scripts in before he'd move onto other things. I'm not picking on him for just that, I loved Kevin Smith's stuff (for the most part), but when it took him so damn long for his black Cat finale, I said screw it. Same with Joss Whedon and his Fray mini.
but maybe I'm not giving Miller enough credit... can anyone suggest a book of his that has some depth to it and isn't just full of over the top, gratuitous violence?

You're on crack or meth. Maybe both.

Do you know how long it takes to produce a movie? Do you know that he's been working on getting all of his Graphic Novels adapted to film for the last 10 years?

You're really being unfair.

Damnit. I've been avoiding this question for almost 4 years.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT IN YOUR SIG Whil!?!??!

I've only been on the Hype for 2 years and 3 months, so you were doing a stellar job of avoiding the question for those first few years.

He wrote the screenplay for the 1st ROBOCOP movie.

'Nuff said!

He wrote the screen plays for all of the Robocop movies. But then the studios assed them up.

Well, they ****ed up the last two. Miller claims he was pretty happy with the first. As am I.

At least he had nothing to do with the live-action Robocop series or it's 2 live action direct-to-video films.:down

you listed, like, six things of his you said you read that you say you didn't care for, I think it's pretty clear you're not a fan of his style. Why ask for another suggestion?

I think the best thing to a toned down comic of his you'll find is The Man Without Fear, which I think you'll enjoy if you liked Year One

There's also Give Me Liberty. It's got a fair amount of violence, but it's also got a great deal of depth and deals with some pretty thoughtful political and social philosophies.

I really can't fathom this "Frank Miller is overrated" argument. I know that the majority of comics readers probably like the guy, but the majority of message board-posting comics fans obviously are super-pissed at the guy. I think this is probably because 75% of the message board dwellers are complete *****e bags.

There are some arguments from the thread that I'm too lazy to grab and quote but will try to provide a different point of view on.

He did do something good post-DKSA. Nobody mentions 300.

Someone said it took over 30 years for someone to better his Daredevil. You mean...20 years, right? Because he did that in the 80s. 80s-00s = 20 years.

If you can't find depth in DKR or DD: Born Again, I don't really know what happened to your reading comprehension.

Something else but I forgot.

Oh yeah, most people with sense praise him for his good stuff and ream him for his bad stuff. That's not overrated, is it?
