Miyazaki Starts New Animated Film

That’s RPatz as the Heron? :wow:

Most big stars that do voice acting tend to just use their own voice so it’s nice to hear him get his freak on :funny:.

I would not have expected that at all, but I love it!

FYI, Mike Sinterniklaas, Dean Venture of Venture Bros. fame, directed the English dub.

I adored this film. I look forward to the English version as well. I was in tears by the end of it. This movie is worthy of Best Picture.

And you have Tokyo Godfathers getting a wide domestic re-release on the 11th…

Has there been any news on the quality of the English dub?

I haven’t heard a lot but what I have heard is that it’s fine. I mean you have Robert Pattinson, Mark Hamill, Dave Bautista, Willem Dafoe, etc. Lot of talent there.

I mean looking at the cast list and considering it's directed by Mike Sinterniklaas, it's surely excellent.

I would have seen the sub version, but it was at a later time than the dub, so I went with that. I very much enjoyed this film. The animation is incredible and like any Miyazaki film, you're sucked into this imaginative world accompanied by a good, at times touching, story. I will say, a lot of the English voice cast really vanishes into their performances that it wasn't until after the movie that I'd forgotten they were in this. Not everyone- one or two voices stuck out where I went 'Oh, I know who this is,' but that's not detriment on the movie. Just a solid and impressive job that this cast did.

Not my favorite Miyazaki movie by any means, but it's still a spectacular film. If this truly is his final work, I'd say he went out on a good note.

Deadline update says it could end up going as high as 12m. A- Cinemascore too. Other marks of note:
–The movie’s opening day easily bests the domestic take of Miyazaki’s last film, 2013’s The Wind Rises ($5.2M), and will rep the highest opening gross for a Studio Ghibli film.

Boy and the Heron is the only entirely foreign production to top the weekend box office this year, and the first since Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in August 2022 ($21.1M).

–The Miyazaki movie is the first original anime (not based on existing IP) to ever top the weekend box office, and the third anime of any sort to do so (after Pokemon: The First Movie and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero).

Boy and the Heron is also the first 2D animated feature not based on existing IP to top the weekend box office since 2009’s The Princess and the Frog from Disney. ($24.2M wide opening).

Robert really went all out, couldn't even tell that it was him.
I had to wait until the credits to read who was who because the cast all did so well. The only times I went 'Oh, I know who this is,' were with Dave Bautista and one of Florence Pugh's characters. Maybe Willem Dafoe too, but honestly, I thought he'd voiced more than one character until seeing nope, that was someone else.

i enjoyed this, but i will have to watch it again because the way the story went about was confusing to me.

visually, it was splendid, as always expected from a miyazaki production. nothing beats 2D animation still.

i don't think it's miyazaki's best, but a good miyazaki film is probably still better than most of what's out there.

the english dub cast did great. robert pattinson was the mvp here.
as others have said, you can't even tell it was him.
he should voice act for more animations.

Caught the film tonight. Well, it's good by virtue of Miyazaki being such a visionary but ultimately it's not as impactful as some of his other films.

The film is essentially more of a slice of life/grieving in the first half and the signature Miyazaki fantasy in the second half. I think my biggest issue is that Miyazaki needed to commit on what he wanted this movie to be. I almost would've preferred he stuck with the slice of life side showing Mahito overcoming his grief and developing his bond with his aunt. By the time we get inside the tower, we only have an hour left and as a result things like Himi become undercooked characters especially considering her impact to Mahito.

I appreciate what Miyazaki was going for and my frustration is that I love in concept both sides of the story, and the subtext is excellent, but in the end, the back half suffers. That said I'm glad I saw it and it's always a joy to see a Miyazaki film in the cinema. While I think The Wind Rises is a better film, I kind of feel like Boy and The Heron is a better swan song.

My ranking of the Miyazaki films (still haven't seen Lupin):

1) My Neighbor Totoro
2) Princess Mononoke
3) Spirited Away
4) Howl's Moving Castle
5) Kiki's Delivery Service
6) Nausicaa
7) Castle in the Sky
8) The Wind Rises
9) The Boy and the Heron
10) Ponyo
11) Porco Rosso

What are people's ranking in here?

I'm actually a big Nausicaä fan, I own a copy of the film's blu-ray and the massive tome that is the manga hardcover collection. The film is only a portion of the manga's story and it's still great on its own.

A Ghibli sequel? That's quite a surprise but a welcome one.

the nausicaa manga is one of the best comic book stories i have ever read.

it expands and builds the world a lot more than the movie does, so if miyazaki's doing a sequel there's so much to mine from the manga.
