Besides, even with medication you need regular therapy to keep your mind in reality (this goes for just about every recurring psychological issue).

Unless you have a source I'm going to call bull on that one. Once you alter the brain chemistry via psychotropic drugs there's no reason for a person to have delusions.

If medicated schizophrenics have the capacity to be good parents then how can you forbid all of them from raising children based on the actions of a few un-medicated schizophrenics. If a person is a law-abiding citizen and takes their medication why would you take away their right to raise a family?

There's a difference between a mild schizophrenic and a schizophrenic that eats their child's brain. If a woman is "far gone" enough to eat bits of her baby she is too far gone to be trusted to take her medications regularly.

Raising a family isn't necessarily a "right" as much as it is a freedom by default. If a parent is unfit for whatever reason then the state has the responsibility to protect it's citizens (in this case the child).

Fair point. I still support social services having continued enolvement with these families and only removing the child when necessary.

Something tells me that this was not her first outburst. In fact I think the article mentioned that earlier in that day she was very unstable but calmed down. If social services had more contact they could pick up on the need to remove the child. Sometimes doing everything you can simply isn't always good enough.

There has to be a precedent for one to be considered unfit. You can't just take away someone's kid because of what they could be capable of theoretically if they were off of meds when they have had no history of skipping meds while being a parent.
