Mom Protests Library's 'Sexual' Spider-Man Comic
Mom Says Book Inappropriate For Her Son, 6

MILLARD, Neb. -- A Millard mother said she's upset by a comic book that she considers sexually explicit that is in her son's elementary school library.

The comic is part of a popular new series about Spider-Man and the head librarian of the Millard School District said it's been in high demand.

"My son looked at this and goes, 'Ohhhh!'" said Physha Svendsen.

She said the book that her 6-year-old son brought home is not age-appropriate for Norris Elementary School students and wants it removed from the library.

"It has a lot of sexual undertones in here, as far as sexuality goes," she said. "They can learn this through any other place, but it's not something I allow them to learn, in my house at least."

Svendsen said she's actively involved with her four children's educations and said comic books like the one in question hold little literary value. She said she's especially concerned about her 6-year-old son, who's still developing reading skills.

Svendesen didn't elaborate on the book's literary elements that she found sexually inappropriate. Some illustrations in the book showed a female character wearing a bikini and a short skirt.

"I think having it in your school, you're still accountable for what's in there," she said.

Donna Helvering is the head librarian for the district and said each book that lands on Millard library shelves goes through a thorough selection process.

"We look at books, as far as age-appropriateness, we look at books for readability and we make sure that we're buying books that are appropriate for all our kids," Helvering said.

She said times and opinions can change, and she welcomes the complaints.

Does a Spiderman Graphic Novel Belong in a School Library?

"We know that we're not always perfect and we always ask parents for their partnership and their contributions to what we purchase in our libraries," Helvering said.

She said that parents can file complaints about library books and the school is required to form a committee to evaluate the complaint within 30 days. The committee will reach a consensus about whether to keep the book on the shelves of that library.

Svendsen said she plans to hold on to the book that her son brought home while the review process takes place.

I gotta admit, the MJ pic is a little racy for a grade school library. Then again, my public libraray carried comic books too. Wasnt too happy about the mom saying comics have little literary value, though. I didnt care for Watchmen but I appreciate that it was named one of the 100 Best Novels in the English language. Take that, uptight lady!:cmad:

"My son looked at this and goes, 'Ohhhh!'"

Then she'll have to lock her son in the basement and hope he never turns on the TV, turns on a computer or stands in line at the grocery store. Why does the fact that her son finds beauty in a women alarm her so much? Pretty doesn't always mean sexy, mom. Maybe mommy needs to get her mind out of the gutter and quit smothering her children?

Wow...really? Really?

I hate naggy, *****y parents. I agree with topdog's post, but I also guarantee that there is MUCH worse and just explicit language and stories coming out of the students' mouths at school. They're terrible these days.

There's a simple solution. Ban school. Then we won't have any of this violence! :spidey:
But really, it's just a female. Be lucky it's not naked Peter Parker he's "oooh"ing at, stupid bimbo.

She's actually got a point. The images in that book were too "sexy" and for no reason. One of the images has MJ waking up wearing a sexy nightie. Why would she be wearing something that sexy when sleeping alone? Why do we need to see her in a wet towel. Why did every image in the book have to have wearing something skimpy?

I don't think the images are going to currupt a child into becoming a sex monster but it might make look at women as nothing more than sex objects

:whatever:

For Pete's sake (no pun intended), it's MJ in a bikini. It's not like the kid found Watchmen in the elementary school library.

Ambroise Bierce's Devil's Dictionary defines "nudity" as "that quality in art most painful to the prurient." :hehe:

I'm not advocating that these were necessary, but this type of clothing isn't really out of the ordinary for women, even if they are alone.

Because the demographic most likely to buy comic books is somewhat nerdy and hormonal young men. Sex sells. The path to a young man's wallet is his...

It's just a bikini...

I'll never understand why Americans are so pissy about the human body...(and I'M american).

This kinda stuff pisses me off. Heres a thought: if you don't like your son reading comics, then don't let him read them. I had to be a certain age before I was even allowed to read one. Then again, I was impressionable as a young boy.

But seriously, just cause she pretty much doesn't like comics and he said 'ooh' to MJ doesn't mean this has to start. Grade-schoolers shouldn't be reading that kinda stuff yet anyways, but to make a big deal out if is just stupid.

Can someone post the pic in question?

Y'know, if I were a parent, I'd think the idea of Spider-Man making a deal with the devil would be a little more worrisome then boob drawings. :o

Parents are so protective sometimes and it gets way too annyoing. This is just rediculous.

Parents have to be protective. Kids are notoriously bad and seeing things down the road or being aware of the bigger picture.

Yeah, some take it too far, but that's no reason not to try.

^^ You do have a very good point and are very right. What I meant though was parents should get all upset over something in a comic book. Especially a Spider-Man or basically any Marvel comic, though, there are titles that have alot of blood in them.

While she's at it, she might as well get the school library to ban the Holy Bible for explicit content.

Mom's kind of hot too. Nice little body. Stylish hair cut. Does she hide herself from her son?

Oh, good God. I am so sick of this kind of crap. Mothers Of America (the name given to the collective entity of over-reactive, overprotective parents who call for the censorship of every damn thing on the planet, be it music, movies, what have you) are ruining this country with their ridiculous protests. You see one thing you don't like & attack the industry as a whole. It's insane. You don't like it, don't bring it in your house. But don't go nuts over everything like that.

That's b/c nobody has more reason to hate MOA than comic fans. God forbid the responsibility for educating your kids should fall on you.

Thank god my mom ain't like that. She used to check to make sure there wasn't something in the comic she didn't want me to see, but she didn't complain. If there was naked women, then I couldn't get it, but oddly enough she let me get ones wiht lots of blood. My moms a very...unique person, shall we say.

That's because you aren't well-versed in the ways of MOA. They are hypocritical & in no way motivated by logic. I know a woman who won't let her kids watch Harry Potter movies b/c it promotes witchcraft, but took them to see Ghost Rider.

I assume this woman's never taken her son to the beach.
