More Doom and Gloom from Alan Moore

To be perfectly honest I'm not entirely convinced that that comment was intended to be Alan Moore taking a dump on all modern writers...

I think it was more a comment regarding the state of the industry, and more specifically, the 2 big producers out there. That the nature of mainstream comics is such out there that there isn't any top-flight talent, or middle or even lower tier... It's all the same stuff and the industry itself leads to writers having less voice over the product than he's comfortable with, more steering towards directives from higher-ups. Leading to product that the writers can't stand behind good or bad... More that their name is just attached to it that they were a part of it.

And personally, I COULD see a Loeb jump on a Watchmen prequel or sequal and rape the hell out of it...

But at the same time I think some of Moore's comments come down to hyperbole and exagerration... but I think he makes some important observations that needed to be said.

If things were really that dire, I don't think any good writers would still be working in mainstream comics at all. But a whole slew of great writers at Marvel and DC indicate otherwise. Maybe they're not as into mind-bending metafiction or deconstruction the way Moore is, but it's still an achievement to crank out fun, entertaining, adventurous stories featuring established superheroes.

Agreed Corp

There are some really good writets telling really neat stories in mainstream comic books

My mom thinks I'm top flight talent so **** you Alan Moore.

Best response ever.

I like Moore. He has a lot of interesting ideas and a lot of worhtwhile stuff to say--and while I understand Moore's desire for his work to be left alone, insulting the people working in the industry like that is completely juvenile. Minus ten respect.

Um..I'm not sure if I would say Moore is really huge into metafiction at all. The only thing that really utilized that technique is Promethea that I can think of as far as his works goes, and even then not until the very end, and maybe his current Neonomicon series. I can't really think of another time he really used that significantly.

I would agree he seemed to be into deconstruction in the '80s and such, but past that, he really hasn't done much work in that vain from what I know. Most of his stuff from the '90s, from his ABC and Image work specifically, were more or less just fun, entertaining superhero tales. They had a little more depth, but they could definitely be read like that very easily.

I agree. I think, like someone said earlier, you do kind of lose the snide and overblown way he says these things. I remember people went bat**** on him for an interview that he seemed to be crapping on super heroes and such, but I saw him say basically the same thing on a video later, and you could tell he was saying it in a very tongue-in-cheek, wink at the camera kind of thing. I'm sure there might be a degree of seriousness to what he's saying, but I have no doubt he's not being completely literal.
