Action-Adventure Mortal Kombat 2

Dewey Crowe as Quan Chi and that guy who looks like a clone of Nathan Jones as Shao Khan. Sure, why not.

Also, I know they’re from “Outworld” or whatever but… casting a couple white guys in those roles is a pretty questionable choice.

Facts.

But then again this whole production is a pretty questionable choice.

Lawd after seeing Extraction 2 it really is a travesty that they didn't get a guy like Sam Hargrave to direct one of these damn movies already, but that's just typical, dumb Hollywood for you.

Such a HUGE missed opportunity though.

How can you say that when Simon McQuoid gave us Liu Kang slow-tripping Kano on repeat and Cole Young punching ice? SO EPIC. :o

Damn, now that you mention it. We are getting great fight choreography in the likes of Extraction and John Wick and the likes of Mortal Kombat needs to be getting the same quality on board.

From what I recall, there wasn't anything particularly memorable about the fight scenes in the first movie. I mean they weren't bad mind you, not as bad as say Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, but I remember very little about them except they used some of the special attacks. Liu Kang did his dragon fatality. Kung Lao split that one Kombatant in half with his bladed hat.

What is this even? They're played by white guys in the games.

I'm giving Simon McQuoid a chance. Even though he is an unknown and doesn't have a bright resume like Sam Hargrave, I think he did a really good job with Mortal Kombat given the relatively small budget in the middle of the Covid era and managing a big property like this. I think he did fine all things considered. I can only imagine him getting better in the sequel.

I have to disagree. Sub-Zero's fight scenes were amazing. The way he utilize his powers while fighting was reminiscent of the games today. I liked how they explained how the characters used their special abilities which in the first two movies we rarely see them.

Sub-zero was the highlight of the first film for me. Very MK1 pre dumbass Quan chi retcons.

I mean so is Sub-Zero. Still a weird choice in live-action.
Why? Shao Kahn was inspired by Roman emperors. Quan Chi is literally a pale faced Demon from the Netherrealm. Sub-Zero was even retconned to have an American mother in MK3.

I feel like I shouldn't have to explain why having white dudes play characters named Shao Kahn and Quan Chi is a bizarre choice in 2023. Also, American doesn't equal white.

You do considering Kahn is his title not his name as established in MKX and neither character has ever been portrayed as Asian. Also John Turk is white which is why the retcon was done in thr first place.

I'm pretty excited about this.

Though I'm not afraid to admit the first film had its flaws, some small, some big. I still loved that movie. Mostly due to the Scorpion/Subzero aspects of course which I feel most would agree were the highlights.

Here's to hoping the movies tone, graphics and budget are more evenly distributed and that they can make the sequel better than the first film.

Look, I get that you are fine with white folks playing Asian characters. I am not. The casting is what it is though and I ain’t interested in debating it.
