Mortal Kombat 2: How Much Does Scorpion vs. Noob Saibot Factor Into the Sequel? - IGN
Considering that Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage is the main protagonist of Mortal Kombat II, just how much will the Scorpion-Noob Saibot subplot figure into the sequel, especially since Hiroyuki Sanada has become an even more in-demand (and award-winning) actor since the first film thanks to the...www.ign.com
They don't sound confident about this movie.

Not that I think this film will be that good
I agree with you overall, but I didn't see anything in the trailer that indicates Urban's Johnny will be more competent than Ashby Johnny. He held his own against Scorpion, as well as outsmarted Shang Tsung and Goro in what was basically a rigged fight. The biggest problem (out of many) with the last film was that it wasn't fun, except for some of Kano's stuff. MK kind of screams dumb fun, but if you remove the latter it's just dumb.
This trailer is alone more fun than that film thanks to Cage, and it looks like he'll at least be more competent than he was in 1995 where he mainly just won without fighting well. I'd give it a 0% chance of not being better than the last. If it ends up being good enough in general remains to be seen.

Have you watched the 95 Scorpion and Johnny Cage fight recently? He fights Scorpion with a surprising amount of skill and awareness. For example, He outmaneuvers Scorpion's kunai and closes the gap on him while the rope is retracting forcing a shocked Scorpion to teleport them to his "stage". Again the Goro fight was essentially a losing battle until Johnny showed his wits again, found a weak spot, and took the fight to a place where he had the advantage.I guess we see it differently. I think Cage was made to be completely out of his league in the tournament (pretty much only Liu Kang felt like a really good fighter on the Earth side). Against Scorpion he just ran and hung on for dear life, and winning in a cheap way that didn't have anything to do with his character. At least against Goro they let him end it with a signature move, so that was better even though the point was that he couldn't even begin to fight him properly. That Cage is entertaining but I would have liked it more if he (and Sonya) could contribute more action-wise.
The moves in the trailer makes it look like he is a fish out of water but clearly skilled enough to hang with some named characters.

Imagine an HBOMAX series that actually is well written and explores the lore of MK.....

I suppose you could view that as him cheating or getting lucky to win, but I like that one of his standout traits is to think on his feet.
Our discussion about this highlights probably my main issue with the latest movies. MK95 is far from perfect but ol' Paul WS still manages to stage fights that have details and progression that tell a story within the fight. Other than the opening scene, the last movie was just punch punch punch, cut, cut cut, can't see ish.Haha, I erased and rewrote part of what I had written and apparently I mistakenly erased more than intended so the part about the middle of the fight got removed too. That about Johnny just running away was meant to be about the forest. My bad there.
In any case don't mean that he doesn't have any skills but Scorpion lands several times more strikes and Johnny does that weird thing with trying to distance himself so Scorpion clearly seems better. That Scorpion brings him into his realm doesn't feel like shock but more a strategy. I guess it's a lot about the cheap ending to the fight that colors my view of the entire thing as it's a stepping stone fight. Have the fight as it is when they are just fighting on the same level and Johnny eventually overcoming adversity to end it in some way he would in the game and I'd enjoy it a lot more.
The Goro thing is fine as they made Goro so much stronger than everyone else, but it would have come across as much better if the potential drop was a battle stage feature, like it can be in the games. I guess part of the complaint here is the nonsensical structure of the tournament.
And as said, I still enjoy the film. I just hope to see characters actually going through tournament fights and winning them properly like it is in the game for this new film, so the characters feel like they belong in this battle of worlds. Less Hollywood that tries to do something related to the game and more trying to put what's in the game on screen.
That's probably why I remember the fights from the old MK but only fragments of the ones in the new one. Granted I've seen the old film many times and the other just once. Our discussion about this highlights probably my main issue with the latest movies.
