Mortal Kombat reboot, or MK3 ?

I've always been 100% supportive of an MK reboot movie that's R-rated and closer to the games in terms of tone and ditches the techno stuff. I didn't care for the first MK film at all and the second was so bad I didn't even finish it. An R-rated and all-out MK film based more accurately off of the first few games would be great, and PLEASE give Scorpion and Sub-Zero much bigger roles. Heck, I'd even pay to see Scorpion with his own origin film centered on him, he deserves it.

Lawsuit Might Hold Up Mortal Kombat Reboot:

We’ve been hearing for a while now that a new Mortal Kombat feature film was in the works, be it a new sequel directed by Christopher ‘mink’ Morrison or a reboot written by screenwriter Oren Uziel, author of the Black List 2009 entry Shimmer Lake. But a pesky reoccurring lawsuit might keep the video game franchise from returning to the big screen.

Filed by film producer Larry Kasanoff (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) and his production company Threshold Entertainment against Warner Bros/Midway Games, the suit alleges intellectual property claims to the Mortal Kombat franchise. The action was filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles, and states that Warner Bros has “failed to work with Threshold in the development and production of the third ‘Mortal Kombat’ film,” and has avoided communication with the company, even though there have been recent reports that a new screenwriter has been hired to develop a MK reboot.
While it is always sad to see a legal mess hold up production of a potential feature, it is far too hard to formulate an opinion on which company is in the right on this one. It is far too complicated of a mess to make judgements, Personally, I’ve never been a fan of the first two films, and think that Paul W.S. Anderson’s original feature is far overrated among video game fans. The game was fun for its day, but I don’t believe there is really enough material for a feature length story deserving of big screen distribution.

this is good news actually... this mean WB was actually working on it lol :woot:

I hate Threshold.

"The game was fun for its day, but I don’t believe there is really enough material for a feature length story deserving of big screen distribution."

Writer needs to do some research. It's also a funny comment considering it's been on the big screen before and the type of material that gets a feature film (I.E. everything).

nobody's ever heard of threshold anyways...

one of those company's that you always hear going bankrupt lol

Mortal Kombat was never a franchise filled with much thought on story and fleshing its characters.

A reboot is not warranted.

But that seems to be a top requirement in getting rebooted or remade these days.

i think MK has enough story and material to make a few movies, three AT LEAST. a reboot would mean theyd get asecond chance at using characters misused or totally wastedin the prevoius film franchise

then why post that in an MK thread? turtles are ehh MK is pure martial arts violence with some story there to tie it all together

I know they tried with SF with Chun Li and failed but what if the focus of any reboot was on just one character? MK always had a lot more story going for it than SF, a character like Sub-Zero with his back story could hold a film on its own.

I will list the film's contributions to the core franchise:

Kano as an Australian. Liu Kang and Kitana as as a couple.

End of list. Could the Mortal Kombat franchise continued to enjoy as much after the film's ended without those elements? Draw your own conclusion, but I do think so.

I'm betting either this will end quickly against Threshold or WB will settle.

It's too bad they didn't keep the idea of Scorpion's spear actually being a live creature.

i would also like to add...

making johnny cage a cool character
and the mortal kombat theme song lol

it didnt add much to the franchise but it translated it perfectly from the game.
if it wasnt for the film i wouldnt know anything about the characters in the game, i didnt care to read the cheesy super nintendo bio's (their life story in 140 characters or less) in the games.

with the exception of sub zero and scorpion , story wise it was as perfect as it needed to be.

they didnt?... so what comes out of his hands in the most recent games?

Its a spear that is attached to a rope. He throws the spear at the enemy. It has always been like this.

I thought the same of the game, then I read a summary of them all last year and realized how deep and thought out they really are, and was quite surprised. There is plenty of material for a reboot, one with at least 4 films in fact.
