Most Humane Way to Kill a Fish?

^I couldn't help but notice your avatar WompuM. I only have one question:

Did they use protection?
What do you think?

I don't like killing things either. Can't you get someone else to do it for you?

Or you could use a hammer to smash its head in..

Cant believe no one has made a joke about drowning it.

Why be humane with fish? They are fish... not humans, if anything you should treat fish in a fishy sort of way.

Whats a common way for a fish to die? Eaten by another fish! So I suggest throwing in a fish's predator in the same tank and watch nature take its course.

Well, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but when I saw Without A Paddle they said it was possible to kill a fish my shining them with a flashlight for a long time or something that can produce a massful amount of light; my guess if it's true I'd try a strobe-light. :word:

I'm conducting some minor research on fish chromatophores at the moment, and I would really like a skin sample for some microscopy work.

I don't know that I'll actually go through with it, but I had been considering offing a staghorn sculpin for skin samples to make slides. The thing is, I really don't like killing things. Even spiders I find in my apartment or house.

So, even if I don't end up going through with it, what do you guys think the most humane way to kill a fish is? Bleeding it out? Decapitation? Suffocation?

I'd love to gain access to some fish tranquilizers to intentionally overdose it on, but I have a feeling that it would be rather expensive and the staff at this facility may be antsy about giving it to an unaffiliated student.

EDIT: Yes, I do appreciate the irony that my username is also the genus of the great white shark...something that (at least early in its life history) preys on fish.

First, you track down the fishes family. You kill the one he's emotionally closest to first. Then, you wait. After he's finally recovered, emotionally, you kill the next closest. You repeat this process until he has no one left, and has been driven to drugs and alcohol for solice.

Next, you capture him. You leave him in a tank that, while tall enough to provide the proper oxygen, is not wide enough for him to move at all. You leave him like this, while slowly removing scales, every day. Not alot, just one or two. Hopefully, he'll heal by the time you've picked off the next few, so you can keep this going for weeks.

Next, you take his eyes. Then you put him into a larger tank, full of sharp objects.

Then, finally you kill him.

This is the most humane way I have found, so far to kill a fish :o

Slowy slice chunks off, then let it suffocate, then slowy crush it's skull.

I think when you were having the kids combine powers, you forgot to have that gay kid throw in heart ;)
After you've been cancelled, the heart just disappears sometimes.

And he isn't gay. He's homosexual.

But...the thing is like half the size of my fish-stick. I'm pretty sure that

1) The insertion would be physically impossible

and

2) If the insertion were to succeed, I'd proceed to rupture virtually every blood vessel in its body, causing massive bruising and ruining my sample.

I do appreciate the input, though. It had crossed my mind once or twice.

I am both impressed and completely horrified by how much thought you have put into this. :trans:

Mmmm, that sounds like what life did to me.:csad:

Get a really old one and give it time to die of old age :)

That's actually really interesting. I'm inclined to call BS on it, but I'm genuinely curious now lol.

Actually, I did want to blind one of them to test direct photoreceptivity of the chromatophores (it's a primary response system that's lost through development and commonly seen in larval forms...or, it turns out, if the fish gets blinded it also reverts to that system). Not sure about these species though.

I decided that would be too ****ed up. Jesus, I'm such a *****.

Well I AM an up-and-coming scientist. :cmad:

I would have gone into greater detail, but I don't need another infraction to my name.

I'm not doing anymore trawls. I'd probably get in trouble. :csad:

Apparently the best way to kill a fish is to grab it by the tail and slam it on a hard surface. Or that might be just to stun. I don't know. I'm not a doctor.
