A mother seeks Harry Potter ban

What a dumb woman.

Pope John Paul II reviewed the books and he said they were good because they teach the lessons of friendship and sacrafice.

That's awesome.

Wicca isn't a real religion anyway

Any metephysical belief that people honestly practice and take seriously can be defined as a "real religion", and Wicca falls into that category.

Wicca is definitely neo-paganism, in that it's a modernized grab-bag of various pagan beliefs packaged in a way quite different from the ancient pagan religions, but as long as people believe in it, its still a religion.

You know, I dare say even if JK Rowling is Satan himself...perhaps the good of her actions out weigh the bad? She single handedly got an entire generation of kids stuck infront of their Playstations reading, again. So even if it is Satanic propaganda, sure we'd have a whole generation of Satan worshippers but at least they would be literate Satan worshippers.

Harry Potter is boring. How the hell does anyone enjoy that?

Before I automatically judge if your opinion is valid or not, how much of the series have you read?

Just out of curiousity, what kind of books do you find to be entertaining?

That is a valid point. Except for the kids who are lazy and only watched the movies :cmad:

unless he says 0, you're wrong.

John Paul II was definitely one of the better popes. Certainly better than Darth Benedict.
Now, now. Benedict was reputedly one of John Paul II's best friends, and while he's a tad more conservative, he's hardly the worst choice. Besides, he's 78 - it's not like he's going to be around for very long.

Macbeth was awesome! How could you forget that one time he tried to bomb the Gargoyles while riding his flying glider? :woot:

Yeah, I know he's up there in age and I know he was one of John Paul II's friends but, for example, his comments about Islam...at the least very stupid, at the most very bigoted.

Just to play devil's advocate...
For those of you who insist that the series is innocent fun, and even good for the children because it spurs them to read and expand their imagination, I would ask you to consider the following. First, since when has an international fad been wholesome? Usually anything truly of redeeming virtue is spurned by the world. Shouldn't that alone urge caution? Second, there are so many other books that also expand the imagination and promote reading, it is a pity to spend that energy on something that portrays witchcraft, scorcery, magic, and other occult practices as good.

He was taken out of context! :cmad:
He was quoting a bigoted text to explain why religious intolerance in wrong! Argh!

He obviously wasn't very clear in his intentions because so many people got the wrong idea.

A suburban county that sparked a public outcry when its libraries temporarily eliminated funding for Spanish-language fiction is now being asked to ban Harry Potter books from its schools. Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban "Macbeth" and "Cinderella."

"There's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter," she said, adding that the books don't support any particular religion but present instead universal themes of friendship and overcoming adversity.

In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

Days later, the board reversed its decision amid accusations that the move was anti-Hispanic.

in all fairness.. anyone who says wicca is evil is simply ignorant. its about being in touch with nature.. and the pentagram is not even about devil warship.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagram ... christianity is to blame though why people think being wiccan is full of nothing but witchcraft and devil worship.. for the most part its about using plants and nature for remedies

It's funny to think that the more people publicly try to take something away from their kids, the more the kids are going to want to know what their parents are freaking about.

So in the end, those who try to get rid of certain "dark-sided" (thank you crazy Jesus mom) books are their own worse ennemy because they're the ones negatively encouraging their children to read them.

Damn I love reverse psychology :D

Satanic jellybeans are always the best...and that's what happens when you go to Wal-Mart.

You're right. Satanic jellybeans are the bomb dot com.

When I hear Wicca, all I keep thinking of is that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where Willow, a real witch, attends a college Wicca club and discovers they're all witch wannabes who light candles and pray to the mother goddess and don't do actual spells. :woot: Funniest damn scene.

I think I remember seeing some video of a person who had similar views toward books that made people think. Of course the old news reels were a bit hard to understand, since they were in GERMAN!

From the October 6th show of Countdown with Keith Olbermann's segment "Worst Persons in the World"

"And tonight‘s winners, Alton and Diana Verm of Conroe, Texas. Father and daughter objecting to a book being read at the Conroe public high school even though Diana has been allowed to read another book instead. The Verms want the offending title censored from the school curriculum, it‘s title: “Fahrenheit 451” which if they don‘t know and it‘s beginning a lot like they don‘t, it‘s about a future society in which all books are censored out of school curricula and everywhere else and firemen go around burning them.

Alton and Diana Verm, living proof of Ray Bradbury‘s hypothesis and today‘s “Worst Person in the World.”
